Ok, so Ive never played a Metal Gear Solid game. I only rented Sons of Liberty and only had time to play through the first mission. Since Metal Gear Solid 4 is coming out this year, Ive decided to play through all the Metal Gears (1,2 & 3) during the summer. Im just a little confuses as to which copies to get. How many versions of the games were released? Should I opt for the originals or get the "substance" versions? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :)West-Coast-G
well MGS 1 didn't really have a subsistence, and I would just get the normal 2 but 3 subsistence since it comes with the first2 nintendo games. even tho 3 does happen before 1 I would still just play them in order. portible ops would be good to add in too but not needed.
thats the chronological order, not the order you should play it in. although mgs3 takes place before 1 and 2 it gives off spoilers from the first 2 because of the order in which they were made and meant to be played. the order you should play them in is 1, 2, 3, portable ops, then 4this is the order you should play them in
metal gear 3
metal gear portable ops
metal gear snes version
metal gear 1
metal gear 2
metal gear 4
in my opinion...other people have theirs
but if you play it in that order, i guess you get more out of it.

Yea, play MGSPO after you finish MGS Twin Snakes, MGS2, and MGS3 in that order.

But i HIGHLY recommend getting MGS3: Subsistence(Not Snake Eater). It brings Metal Gear and MEtal Gear 2:Solid Snake (the 8-bit games) if you really enjoy the MGS universe.

1 - Required.
2 - Required.
3 - Required.
Portable Ops - Recommened, it gives you story of how one of the main badguys became evil in the 1st place. Well if not evil then misunderstood.
4 - When it comes out have all those completed. In this order.
exactly same advice here :)I would say play them in this order.
1. Metal Gear Solid (ps1)
2. Metal Gear Solid 2 (ps2)
3. Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence (ps2)
4. Metal Gear Solid portable ops (psp) You don't have to play this game though.

To be honest you should get MGS TTS because the graphics resembles that of MGS SOL,well if you own a GC or a Wii.
Here are a few images of MGS TTS....

Click on image 67 and up because the first few are kinda dark.
And here are a few images of MGS for the PS....

Yeah.. finding Metal Gear Solid 1 on PSX might be a little harder then finding Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes for GC. Granted the PSX/PC version was a better game for its time but Twin Snakes is a little easier on the eyes and actually will help ya get into the controls (first person shooting ) for the next 2 games. However the voices and difficulty in the original were MUCH MUCH BETTER.darkwolfs48
Well the only person's voice who changed in the game was Mei Ling or however you spell her name and the difficulty is about the same as the original.
If you're into games despite them being "last gen," then the MGS on the PSX/PSone. It's a game in a genre of it's own. It was truly unique at the time of its release. If you don't want to see how far we traveled in graphics since then, there's MGS for the Gamecube with the first-person view update and better graphics.
Besides those, I'd go through the other side games that are linked to the "Solid" branch of the franchise. VR Missions for the PSX was cool, as well as MGS2:Substance and 3's Subsistince.
If you wanna get MGS3, get the Subsistance version. It has a second disc with a bunch of other things about MGS, online multiplayer, and an update to the camera: A controllable 3d camera. It changed the game, to be blunt.
Oh yeah, and the PSP has MGS: Portable Ops. It's a decent game that has a great deal of fun in it (online, ad hoc, spoiler-things), but like big games on consoles that sacrifice AI or physics for graphics (Oblivion, Gears), it falls victim to such dev-choices($$). Being a fan of MGS, the story alone was enough to keep me interested.

Wrong portable ops explains a lot and there is rumor of a portable ops 2
It doesn't matter how or where you find it, but go and get a copy of Metal Gear Solid for the original Sony Playstation. I know...the graphics are going to look like crap compared to what you are used to, but this game was truly revolutionary for its time. It also has the best story of all the Metal Gear games and it is the game that brought the Metal Gear series to where it is now.
Forget the Gamecube version. That's like me telling you to play the ported Sony Playstation versions of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy VI. If given the choice, play the original version. It's a classic and hands down one of the best games of all-time. Playing the original PSone version of the game will give you THAT MUCH MORE APPRECIATION for Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3.
When you compare it to what you're going to get with Metal Gear Solid 4, you'll realize how far Metal Gear has truly come.
1. Metal Gear Solid (PSone version) I got a copy on ebay for 23 bucks.
2. Metal Gear Solid 2
3. Metal Gear Solid 3
4. Metal Gear Solid Portable OPS (optional)

GET. IT. NOW.
I dont want to play with in order of the story line. I want to play with in the order they were released. Kinda like Star Wars. I was just confused about the different versions of the games that they released.West-Coast-G
i would recommend you play mgs3. because its a prequal it doesn't depend in and back story other than the bare minimum that you dont really need to know. there are only spoilers if you know what to look out for. i played this one first and it was a good statring point afterwards i played mgs 2 but found it depended heavily on the story of the first one so i played that then went back to mgs2 and it made a lot more sense.
in fact even mgs one depends on the story from metal gear one and two, but if you get the subsistance version of mgs3 these games are there as a bonus. even though they are only eighties games, they're fun to play.
I started withMGS1 for PS1. I was in the service at the time and all my friends that were in kept going on and on about the game. I got hooked. I went in order from there on. 2 was a let down IMO but 3 more than made up for it. Get on that now cuz MGS4 is coming !CyanX73
FIXED
Play them in the order they released. It makes the most logical sense, seeing as that's how Kojima saw fit to tell the story. Also, you wouldn't want to play the PSOne game after playing the PS2 and PSP games. It would just feel even more outdated.
MGS
MGS2: Sons of Liberty/Substance
MGS3: Snake Eater/Subsistence
MGS: Portable Ops
MGS4: Guns of the Patriots
MGS3: Subsistence also comes with the original games Metal Gear and Metal Gear: Solid Snake. They're interesting just to see where the series started, but they're not really necessary to understand the story.
Also, as a note about Portable Ops:
While most of the people here list it as optional, it actually does a pretty good job of bridging the gap between the events of MGS3 and the later games in the series' timeline. I don't want to give away the plot, but it explains the origins of Outer Heaven. Sure, you could go ahead and play MGS4 without playing PO, but I thought it was one of the best games on PSP. If you have a PSP, you should check it out.
If you do have a PSP, you might want to check out the MGS Digital Graphic Novel. It retells the story of the original MGS (with no gameplay) and I've heard it's a very cool take on the story. I haven't seen it, but I'll probably pick it up before MGS4 comes out.
