http://www.mangotango.co.uk/New-200GB-Blu-ray-Disc-from-Hitachi-by-2009/technology-news/18156254/

"Choosing between Blu-ray and HD discs is always going to be tricky. Don't worry, we're not trying to sway you one way or another, but we are doing our best to give you all the latest news. Because we're nice like that.

So, here's an interesting piece of news for you to chew over as you sit and ponder the options. Hitachi, one of the top Japanese companies, is planning to make an eight layer Blu-ray Disc capable of storing 200GB of data, according to a report from Nikkei.net.

The new disc, with its oodles of storage space, is due for release in 2009 and would have four times the capacity of the Blu-ray Discs currently on the market. These are currently capable of storing 25GB per layer, and have just two layers.

It would also be substantially more than HD Discs, which at present offer just 15GB per layer."

I don't think they'll be using these for games anytime soon. They aren't filling too many 50Gb discs as is. Probably more for information and stats.

If the PS3 can read more than dual later blu ray with a firmware update that would open up the ability to use these disks for gaming. We can only hope, because a super long and super high def game (RPG, FPS, RTS - whatever) would be something to behold.

No. Firmware does not govern the lasers ability to read layers. In regards to firmware and layers...the only thing a fireware update can alter is the read precision and adaptability to media formats (not additional layers).

Just so you know :)

Sheesh, not like we haven't heard of 100-200gb blu-ray discs before. It's practically useless to talk about it since it will never make its way into the main blu-ray movie and gaming format since the current players can't all magically start reading more than two layers, thus it will never be used You almost have to consider a 200gb Blu-ray disc as a whole new format in itself if it forces everyone to rebuy their players. The main application, probably only appilication, for this is for computer storage with more expensive drives and probably takes half a day or more to burn one.

even though they are making these bigger blueray disks i think the ps3 can only read the single layered 25gb disk and 50gb double layered disk.

The PS3 won't benefit from this. The drives in the current models wouldn't be able to read the discs.

What allows the PS3 to read the dual layer disks? Does it have two lenses? I'm just confused. I was thinking that if it only had one lense to read a dual layer disk, then what stops it from being able to read more layers than that?

PS3 only support single and dual layer disks. Reading of multiple layers is done by allowin the light to be reflected though one layer, its kinda ocmplex but its a single lens. While there have been multilens drives which were super faster to read, they also had issues tho. Pitty the idea died out.

i doubt any one would want to use all the space for games cause the game will never end....more money will come if you sell lets say gta 6 which is 50gb one year and next year gta7 which is another 50gb instead of one game which will be 200gb and there wont be another one for 2 or 3 years

That sounds to me like you could just change the software and the hardware could still read it. Am I wrong?

You're wrong. Each time a layer is added it requires new hardware to do it. Of course that assume its using the same base standards, if they choose something a little different then all sorts of things need to change. Think of it this way. HDDVD uses the same laser tech as BD, and yet the PS3 cant play them.

In the case with dual layer "dvd" burners there were some drives sold as single layer that were updated to dual layer with a firmware update. But that's some, and just one extra layer, and after years and years of the dvd tech being refined. There's no way a update will allow for more than two layers on the PS3.

Yeah, and not like any commercial will happen where where you buy a 200gb disc with something on it already. You'd be the one buying the expensive burner (just a dual layer costs $700+ right now) and then the expensive discs. And from there who has 200gbs of stuff they need to burn? And I guess it would take half a day or all day to burn that many layers. Then after you make your first 200gb disc, then what? How often will you need to burn another 200gb? You'd then probably wished you payed $60 for an external portable 200gb drive you can get now instead of 2 years from now.

Oh, and for the record.... mentioned in the first post was that HDDVD had a layer size of 15gigs, thats not true. HDDVD has 30gigs a layer, BD has 25. While movie BD is 2 layers, HDDVD is only 1.

LOL, I like HD-DVD, but it is 15gigs per layer, 30gigs total. Even some early combo discs (dvd on other side) only could do 15gig single layer on the HD side. Then they had 30gigs on one side and dvd on the other. Now they have the first triple layer combo disc coming out soon, two 15 gig HD-DVD layers and a single DVD layer (4.6gb or so) all on one side of the disc. I think the first title is an anime called Freedom or something. Not like you need dual layer all the time. For some reason the awesome looking 1080p 2+ hour Happy Feet was only 14gigs on a dual layer disc.

AGAIN, SO NO ONE OVERLOOKS, THIS IS ONLY FOR COMPUTER APPLICATIONS, THIS WON'T BE USED FOR GAMES OR MOVIES AS NO PLAYER WILL SUPPORT IT, AND 95% SURE ON THE 100GB ONES TOO. You might as well consider the 200gb a whole new format when it comes to movies and games.

IF the PS3 could infact read this monster of a blu ray disc and game developers were willing to develope a game for 10 years then it may work....."sigh".

although its not completley unlikely as Resistance almost used a full 25gig single layer disc.

The best way I can describe it for you with getting into the technical mumbo-jumbo is. A cd is a thread with info written on it wrapped around and around a bunch of times to make a disk. Now as time has gone on this "thread" has gotten skinnier, as the "thread" gets skinniermore info can be wrapped around the disk. Bluerays "thread" is really skinny and it can be wrapped around the disk more times then any other disk before. Now the double layer part, the first threadis red, and the second thread over top of it is blue. The blueray drive knows to read thered first and thenblue second, it's an oversimplification but I think it's a good way to explain it.
