I have the slim version and I have it laying horizontal. Runs cool and I'm not using a fan. I DO NOT recommend using any kind of aftermarket fans or coolers. Just dont... do it..

I'm the same way. I'm 60 gig just went out. I got the slim now and the 1st think I check was if it gets hot. And it does real quick a few of my friends have them and said there's does the same. one of my friends said he left it on a few times over night to download and said nothing happened. One thing I did notice is it gets hot real quick but after about 45 mins to an hr it starts cooling down. The heat from the top goes away, just the back stays hot. But after one goes down u get cautious, I feel ya.

its not that hot amigo, sure the air coming out the back feels sorta hot but its still well under the limit to burn or damage metal/lead products. look at it this way, it can handle well over 100 degree F for several hours, easy!

People are so worried about heat nowadays. What's hot to you may actually be the norm. I wouldnj't worry about it too much since these PS3 SLIMs are more reliable and better made than it's predecessors.

My slim blows out hot air from the back but I've played it for about 3+ hours so far (only got it 3 days ago) and it seems to be fine.

Longest non stop playing time I got with my PS3 slim was nine hours now, and it haven't got hot in any way (besides it's back, something natural, since thats where the fans are).

I don't think this is as big a deal with the slims models. Normally with the fat ones if it's overheating it means that your power source is weak and you probably have another electronic device plugged in close to it, like a heater. I'm particularly careful nowadays so the only things I have plugged in are my PS3, TV and cable box around that area. You'd be surprised how much energy a PS3 needs and if it doesn't get it properly it can crap out. With the slims though, I don't see many people having that problem.
