I have heard that the new PS3 Slims are not compatible to play Playstation 1 & 2 games. You gotta be ****ing kidding me. Im not trying to troll or whine and call me a noob for not knowing by now but Im actually a noobie to the whole Playstation 3 experience. I have a library of PS1 games and PS2 games dying to beat and I also assumed that I could play them which is why I was more excited for a PS3. Its hooked up to a big screen TV and I do not want to have to connect and put away my Playstation 2 just to play a game or two. I heard that the older PS3 models could run earlier game and the newer slims lacked that attribute. Just like the xbox. It was compatible with earlier xbox games but its lagging pretty bad and its getting ready to fry on me any minute now and I barely use it (once a month) :( I have a new 120 GB Playstation 3 Slim, and I was wondering if this was true :( With school, and projects being first, I wont be able to get full priced PS3 games for awhile, perhaps cheaper ones, and I resort to older games.

I believe it can play Psone games only... and honestly it should be the other way around since they are releasing PSone games via PSN... Thats why i hated to give up my original PS3 60GB which was fully backward compatible.

Well If I had known about it earlier. Thanks goodness I have a broader choice to PS1 games to choose from. I don't understand why its compatible with PS1 games but not PS2. You have people exchanging their older 40GB, and 60GB models for newer ones without realizing that they are loosing a very good feature that makes the PS3 so great. I think SONY made a bad move there.

they did it to save money/make it cheaper. but idk if it was really a smart move or not. if you still have your ps2, you can use that to play ps2 games :P i never had a ps2 so its not a huge deal to me, tho

It's only a bad move to buy a PS3 Slim expecting it to play PS2 games if you don't bother to do any research beforehand. The last PS3 with PS2 compatibility came out a year and a half ago.

And yes, ALL PS3's play PS1 games.

PS2s are still on the market which is why its not compatible, they want to maximize sales with that console... PSones are obviously not available by retail anymore which is why they did keep it compatible with those, and yes the Slims have lower tech compared to the original PS3's which make them cheaper but I strive for quality more than pricing. I wish they would have made the PS3 slim an option as well as the PS3 60GB even if it would cost about 150bucks more. Myself dont have any PS2 games so I can work with the slim since i'd mostly use it as a PS3 and blu-ray player and the occasional PSone PSN download, but i won't be buying any PS2 games so i'm good... but thats why its not PS2 backward compatible.

I guess you're right. Its not the act of laziness that I dont want to have to connect and disconnect the PS2 every time I play PS2 games, but I expected the PS3 to have the features its older counterpart had. Not a good way to "save" money in my opinion. I think it disappoints more than anything. I might have enough pocket change for a PS3 game once every so 2-3 months, so I thought that would keep me distracted :P what can you do now. I just cant wait to get my hands on Uncharted 1 & 2, Killzone, MGS4, condemned, and resistance. Not horribly disappointed at the same time

Actually it hit me by surprise. I wouldn't have seen it as something to worry about if I knew the old models had PS2 & 1 compatibility. I would have just assumed that the slim was a smaller upgrade to its older counterpart with more memory options.

It is a clone...but of the PS3's since the 40GB from summer 2008 and onward.

The 60GB, 20GB, and original 80GB have PS2 compatibility.

The newer 80GB, 40GB, and 160GB PS3 "fat" do not. And of course, neither do the Slims.

If I were forced to buy a new PS3, I would personally miss the 4 USB ports and memory card slots on my 60GB more than the PS2 compatibility. But that's just me.

you're real late to the party, everyone has already complained about it 2 years ago.

Sony is probably going to bring back PS2 BC when they stop selling the PS2. they'll probably end up releasing a PS2 emulator in a firmware update, and put PS2 games up on PSN.

yeah it does suk im a new ps3 owner too and i was kinda dispointed there were some ps2 games i missed that i would love to go back and play like FF12 and mgs3 but i really wont miss it all that much because i will def be spending 99.9% of my time with ps3 games. I would really like it if sony could eventually build a ps2 emulator into the firmware but i know the chances of that are slim. At least i like the new design and its looks good next to my 360 and it seems of good build quality.

I doubt sony will ever release a software based ps2 emulator for the ps3 firmware that covers physical games. Its possible that they would release select ps2 titles on the playstation network. They might do that via emulation in a case by case instance or if the God of War collection is any indicator they might just have the games rebuilt for the ps3. The PS2 was a very complex and unique system which during the course of its existence developers employed various techniques to get the most out of the architecture. Building a software emulator that not only accurately emulates the complex hardware but also the quirks that developers exploited in building game on the system would be a daunting time consuming task. The Launch 60GB & 20GB playstation 3s had the ps2 CPU and GPU soldiered onto the system motherboard. These initial models had near perfect backwards compatibility. The 4 USB 80GB playstation 3 removed the ps2 CPU but left the GPU using the CELL and software to emulate the missing CPU. This model took a good hit in software compatibility and it was just emulating one aspect of the hardware. Later models removed all ps2 hardware and thus any and all ps2 backwards compatibility. The psone backwards compatibility remains as the system is simple and strait forward enough that creating an accurate software emulator is not nearly as difficult or hardware intensive. Sony representatives have said in numerous interviews that ps2 compatibility is off the table, is not being worked on and will not come back.

most recently HERE

QUOTE:

Sony's John Koller

"With the backwards compatibility issue, we're at a point now in the cycle of the PlayStation 3 that there's so many PS3 games available, so many strong PS3 games, that it's really become far less of an issue than I think a lot people -- particularly the media -- are asking about. In all of our studies, we've noticed that it's fallen off the map in terms of demand."

but also HERE

QUOTE:

Sony's John Koller

"It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table," Koller says with an air of finality. But it's all people ever talk about! "It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he claimed. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies." "That won't be returning,"

What's funny is you can set up a virtual PS2 Memory card on the Hard Drive, even though you can't play PS2 games on a slim. I'm sure it has to do with all the PS3s getting the same firmware updates, but I don't know.

I still think as soon as the PS2's "10 Year Life Cycle" comes to an end backwards compatibility will be returned to the PS3.

I don't care what Sony says the software BC emulation didn't cost them a thing to keep installing on the PS3s. It was just loaded onto the ROM just like any other instruction. The only reason they took it out was to keep milking out the PS2 for a few more years. Why buy a $149 PS2 ($99 now) if you can get a PS3 and play your games on it.

well it wasnt emulation older ps3s actually had parts from the ps2 in it. I still feel they should implement emulation though if the 360 can have it so can the ps3 i dont expect full bc but they could get a good amount .

The virtual ps2 memory card feature is legacy that exists in both models with and with out backwards compatibilitiy. Its not an indicator of whats to come but rather what was. PS2 Backwards compatibility in the ps3 required ps2 hardware and thus cost sony money to implement and saved sony money to remove.

I know the older 60GBs had the actual chips in them but the 80GBs had the software BC emulation, which is what Sony was using before the got rid of the BC on the 40GBs. The argument was that the software emulation was used to eliminate the cost of installing the BC chips.

My point was that once the software was written it didn't cost Sony anything to put it onto the PS3s (or it cost very little) so the argument of getting rid of BC because of cost was stupid.

What also makes it suspicious is that the BC for PS1 games was left alone. Of course Sony was not selling anymore PS1s at that point.

There has never been any full software emulation of the ps2 on the ps3 released by sony nor is there any planed.

As long as people eat up remakes like the God of War disc, there's no incentive for Sony to put BC back into the PS3. Much more money can be made re-selling you the same game over again. I think PS2 games being available on PSN is about as close as anyone without an old PS3 is going to get.

I dont own a PS2 and there are a huge amount of PS2 games still being sold in stores for really cheap, I'd easily spend a ton of money on games I missed out on last generation if my ps3 slim could play ps2 games.

meh, their loss.

Prince_Denspion

The only reason that PSOne games work on all PS3s is because in order to run PSOne classics off the PSN network it require some sort of software emulation. So the backwards compatibility is only coincidental. If it weren't for PSOne classics I wouldn't be surprised if the newer PS3s had no backwards compatibility at all.

As for the PS2 backward compatibility. It's buggy at best, and with the $100 you saved from not getting a fat PS3 you should go buy a PS2 slim and get the better performance.
