I read a previous thread from someone who was also new to Gamespot but was an owner of a PS3 and it was nice to see how so many members from GS welcomed him! So I thought that I would introduce myself and at the same time, as for some advice. I been out of gaming for a long time and Doom was the last game I played on PS1but I am definitley a FPS fan! Is there something out on PS3 similar to Doom that I can get started on? I like Doom because you could start out slow and there was no time factor (not being rushed through each level). I also liked how the enemies became toughter to kill, looking around for "Health", ammo and new weapons. Is there a game (older is fine) that is close to Doom that I can get started on my new PS3? I looked/asked around enough that I'm sure I would enjoy Killzone 2. I'll get that when I buy the PS3. Eventually, I look forward to playing online (Multiplayer), something I've never done before. As far as accesssores go, I will buy the USB Headset and the Duel Shock Wireless Controller. Anything else? Thanks for everyones advice in advance!

Welcome! Similar to Doom, eh? Well, FPS games sure have changed a lot since then... Closest thing I can think of is Resistance: Fall of Man. Maybe you should give that one a try (it's Greatest Hits, so you can pick it up for cheap).

Welcome! Check out Dead Space - it's somewhat similar to Doom in that you're going down corridors and being attacked by alien monsters. It starts out relatively easy and gets harder as you go. You can upgrade your weapons and armor. I absolutely loved it, I think most people do.

Probably BioShock. Can get it for like $20 on Amazon which is super cheap, plus it's a great game. I wasn't too excited when I first started playing it, to be honest, because I'm not much of an FPS guy, but it's got great pacing - the game keeps getting better as it goes along. So after the first 2 levels it really kicks in and it's just great. Pretty close to Doom, I think, though I've never played that. But it's the only FPS with a health bar that comes to mind. Need to go around getting/buying health as well, like Doom. Also, if you know what's good for you, you'll try out Uncharted 2 :P If you have any interest in action or action/adventure games or movies (especially Indiana Jones) you'll just be blown away by this one. Plus if you've been out of gaming since Doom this game's graphics will surely blow your mind as to how far graphics have come since then. Best graphics on a console by far, and it has a great story, fantastic gameplay, sound, dialogue, is actually funny and somewhat realistic, with physics, oh and it makes you feel like you're directing and acting in a live action (adventure) film. Seriously. Welcome to GS :)

welcome to gamespot and congratulations on deciding to get a ps3. you won't be disappointed. being a new owner, i suggest buying some of the games you missed out on not only for the experience, but because they are cheap. for example; metal gear solid 4 is $17 used. if you like fps's try killzone 2, resistance: fall of man, or modern warfare 2.

WOW, that didn't take long for people to respond! And "THANKS" for the feed back. I'm taking notes and hope to get a few more responders.

sounds like Bioshock will suit you pretty well mate, it's a great game and bioshock 2 will be out sometime this year so it wont be to long between drinks. Also Borderlands Might interest you a bit, if you wanna see just what the ps3 can do though, get uncharted 2 / Killzone 2.

I don't think Bioshock would necessarily meet his fancy. He said Doom, not Doom 3. Anyway, you could also try FEAR and The Chronicles of Riddick.

Wolfenstein is deliciously gory at times. It's a good blend of Nazi shooting and the supernatural. There's also a novel anti-grav effect, which kicks in every now and then. It makes the game play fun.

Resistance 1 and 2 are good sci-fi shooters. The second one has bigger set pieces, monsters, and a greater sense of urgency. It's not as forgiving as the first one though.

Dead Space is just beautifully creepy. It's the closest thing to the Doom experience. The second one is coming out soon methinks.

Fear 1 & 2 follow the supernatural theme again. Big scares, a powerful, evil force in the form of a little girl, alternate reality and lots of gore. The game relies on checkpoint systems and doesn't allow the player to manually save. (A good ol' school-esque gaming experience.)

Check out Bioshock and Fear 1 and 2 for your "scary" type FPS. Although those didn't scare me too much. Also please check out the "Recommendation's thread that's located on the top of these forums. Unfortunately Doom 3 was never ported to the PS3, but they have mentioned that doom 4 would be available for the PS3

1st off congrats on your ps3 purchase and welcome to gs. a LOT has changed since doom, but i am from that era as well and i will do my best to help ya out.

mgs4 - if your from the doom era, chances are youve played one of these games. get this one, youll thank us all. still one of the best games ive played this gen. its 3rd person, but it is truly one of the greatest games ever made. awesome sp and severely underrated mp. and this game is really cheap right now.

dead space - no online, but youll see a lil of doom in it. once again its 3rd person, but its totally immersive and the scariest game to play in the dark with the surround sound cranked up at 3 am by yourself... this gen. also very cheap right now.

killzone2 - this is why you bought your ps3. if you like fps's this is the one. i personally cant stand the fps genre (gun barrels bouncing make me nauseous) but i own this game. some of the best graphics, physics, and sound youll hear on the ps3. i use this game to show mine off actually.

uncharted 2 - i didnt really care much for the 1st one, but this one will pull you right in. its an amazing game and example of what this gens all about. great online as well. within the first minute of the opening sequence you will be satisfied with your purchase.

dark sector - i know im gonna catch a cpl flames for it but hear me out. this guy has been out for a minute. this game will feel a lil like home. plus using the glaive with the sixaxis is something any old school gamer will appreciate. i got this game for $15 a year ago, so im sure its a cheap find.

theres plenty more, i could go on. but these are the titles i would check out first...with the exception of ds, that was just an obscure one that i knew nobody would mention.
