HI,

Today I bought a sony lcd tv that comes with (via redemption) a 40gb ps3.

So I guess I would like to know a few things before I get it.

Does it need to be connected to the internet to use it? As in when I get it, will I have to do a dash update?

Does it play dvd-movies? If so what formats will it play. DVD-R? Or shoudl I keep my dvd player to play my home movies?

Are the blu-ray games or movies as easily scratched as dvds are?

Any precautions I should take with it? Don't what rrod like 360s get LOL

Anything else I should know?

thank you

-No, you can update it with your PC, just put the update files on a meme device from the Sony site.

Does it play dvd-movies? If so what formats will it play. DVD-R? Or shoudl I keep my dvd player to play my home movies?

-It plays DVD's, and as i believe it also plays DVDR's but some arnt upscaled.

Are the blu-ray games or movies as easily scratched as dvds are?

-No, they're alot more resistent

-Nope, aslong as you dont lock it in an air tight box as it runs...

Anything else I should know?

-Nothing you cant find out yourself...

Yeah.. real funny. Anyway, upscaled DVD's on PS3 are excellent. Ditch your old player.

you can also get updates off of the games, so if it says "you need firmware x" just got to firmware update and choose via storage media, it's likely the update you need to play the game will be stored on the disk. obviously the newer the game the newer the update, i think.

1. No, you don't have to have it connected to the internet to use it, but you will be missing many features that the ps3 offers if you don't.

2. Yes, it does play DVD movies... but who uses DVDs... it's all Blu-Ray from now on!

3. No, Blu-Ray games and movies don't scratch as easily.

4. Make sure ps3 is well ventilated.

5. Get off forums and GAME ON!

wow he made a funny...

the other person gave some good advice, keep it well ventilated, so have some room at the back where the hot air can go, if you contain it the hot air just goes back into the ps3 and it has to work alot harder. thats a good way to make it fail

Does it need to be connected to the internet to use it? As in when I get it, will I have to do a dash update?
-- Internet connection is optional but you get access to web brower, Playstation Store, online games, etc if you connect PS3 to the interest. As for any required firmware updates, if you want to go online its required and but its optional if your offline.

Does it play dvd-movies? If so what formats will it play. DVD-R? Or shoudl I keep my dvd player to play my home movies?
- Yes it plays DVD's and DVD-R is supported -- if you connect PS3 via HDMI you can even upscale DVD's

Are the blu-ray games or movies as easily scratched as dvds are?
- Blu-ray disks are fairly scratch proof.

Any precautions I should take with it? Don't what rrod like 360s get LOL
- Give it room and don't block the vents. Don't force disks into the disk dive... thats about it.

Anything else I should know?
- MGS4 = awsome...

thank you

Thanks for most of the replies guys, much appreciated.

I forgot to ask if the 40gb version has wireless network. from searching on overclock.net it appears it does have.

So I will have it connected to the internet after all as I have wireless network in house.

the console has only been claimed today, have to wait for sony to receive my receipt and serial no (they will get it on monday) then send out the console.

cheers

I haven't thought of what games I will get for the ps3.

Probably just exclusive titles at this stage as I have all the latest releases on xbox 360.

so

metal gear solid 4 ?

motorstorm?

what others are there?

You don't have to update unless a game requires you to.

You can play any DVD Movie on your PS3 (and it's also upscaled).

Notice the air vents on the back and on the right side of the PS3? Yeah? Good. Make sure there's enough space for hot air to get outside.

Don't drop yer PS3, dont pour water over it etc.

That's pretty much it :D Have fun and read the PS3 manual XD

It will play Blu-ray (movie and game) and DVD without doing an update, but each update helps for AVI, MPEG ... files, it plays DVD-R.

As long as you leave 30cms/12inch free on the back, right and up it will work well, and take care of too much dust (I mean lots and lots) and cats putting fur in it.

Thanks Again guys.

Just can't wait for the console to arrive.

I will go to EB games and buy a couple of games for it and might get a blu-ray movie as well from a video store.

I read in the news that the new update was crashing some ps3s so sony removed it.

anyway, thank you for your help.

Oh, now I have to get a toilet installed since I can't poo on my console LOL
