Turtle beach is good its has headphones with a chat mic and are pretty inexpensive on amazon the px21. It is a usb headset as well but also plugs into your tv and is not wireless. If you want wireless you will pay for it, the cord is about 10ft or so on these headsets.

Get the official Sony Bluetooth headset, you won't regret it.

it seems he wants a headset that he can also hear the game in his ear and possibly use to chat with as well.

There's a pretty good amount of options for you... depending on your budget, of course. The PX21's are about $70, Logitech makes a wireless set (the F540) for $150... but I've seen it on ebay for around $100. Tritton has a few offerings from $70 to $200.

The problem is that the game sound cannot be transmitted to your headset via the usb port. You only plug a headset into there so that you can talk to people. If you want to be able to hear them, the easiest way to do so is get a headset that connects to the optical port on your playstation too. Then get an optical cable for like $3 on Amazon or somewhere cheap. That will allow you to hear the game volume too.

How do you have your system set up? Are you using HDMI? Try going into the audio settings on the PS3, and select multi-out. This will allow the game sound to go through the HDMI (or optical) to the TV and the red/white audio cables to the headset. Hope this helps:D

I have my headset plugged into my PS3 via USB (for mic) and the sound into the my surround receiver, I imagine that I could just as well plug it into the TV. But that's because my cable is split so that I have a two individual cables (mic and sound) plugged into an USB thingy. My headset is a siberia steelseries V2 and it's really good for movies, PC and PS3 games.

Well how good of sound do you want, what kind do you want and what are you willing to spend. All factors that will come to play when deciding. Turtle Beach and Tritton are pretty useless. As well is Sharkoon. They sound pretty good. I paid 80 bucks for a pair of Sharkoon SPs and they sound worse than my Sennheiser HD 202s. If you want they best sound a mixamp with a pair of studio headphones like Sennheiser or Sony will work really well you will just have to set a mic in front of you to speak in game. What I would do.
