Ouch. This is terrible news.

In short, this means that PS2 folks are converting to next gen...only to the 360 rather than the PS3. Sony had 360 by the short hairs the month previous, and then let 'em go again. I hate to say it, this is the first time that I've thought we officially will lose the next gen race. Unless something changes quickly, there's no way PS3 will ever pass the 360 as far as their total install base -- RROD or not. And the fact that whoever has the biggest install base YIELDS who is lead platform on multi-platform games means that PS3 is going to be relegated to bottom of the heap.

Sony may win the next-gen format war with Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, but I fear the console war winner just rang the bell.

Ouch.

And, to top it off, I think that this is the first week where either the 360 or the PS3 outsold the PS2.

Terrible news, folks.

actually ps2 users are mostly converting to the Wii, note 360 is only doing slightly better than the original xbox in terms of sales, the ps3 price is the major problem but the pricewill only go down

It's because of speculation on a PS3 price drop. There are lots of PS2 owners waiting for the right moment to upgrade. You can bet it's not on their mind everyday, they aren't on these forums or care about the competition, but they know the price has to come down further. If the rumor of a $400 40GB PS3 turns out to be true then it will make a world of difference. Home might help some also.

First off, PS2 market has already expanded to the maximum.

Second off, PS3 price is still too high for most of the casual and probly even hardcore players. They are still speculating the price movements, in other words, they are expecting price to drop again this year, which is highly possible. (all the must buy titles of PS3 come out next year)

Third off, people who want to play Halo 3 probably has already bought Xbox 360, if they are capable of.

PS3 is still far away from losing, if you exame the game library. It is still way too small compared with Xbox 360 and not to mention there is currently not many killer apps, but its sale is still 100k every month and every region. If you look at Xbox 360, which has no attractive games in ***, has sales around 30k every month. See my point? Lots of people are still buyin PS3 even it has relatively weak game library.

Cheer up people.

Sony is dead last in NA and it won't be changing anytime soon. September looks like a very bad month for the ps3 as they have nothing to offer and the release halo 3 doesn't help.

This is really bad news leading into the fall season.

360 outselling ps3 by more than double in august.

360 has a minor price drop and has an influx of double sales, ps3 has a major price drop and has a double sales influx but even double the amount only ment a monthly sales figue of 159k.

Hopefully this new rumour will come true and sony can start selling some 40gb ps3's for £399.

I cannot see a way of sony winning this console war, they are definitly not going to dominate but theres a chance they may still come out on top, but at the moment i cannot see it, every month 360's lead over sony is growing larger, and sales are only going to get bigger next month due to halo 3.

Sony have been doing every thing right i can't see what else they can do to gain momentum for the holiday season short of dropping the price drasticly to $350 or something for there high end model, and i very much doubt thats feasible, but a big hit short term could mean larger sales long term, am sure if the ps3 was only $350-$399 for the high end model it would generate huge sales.

If sony are going to bring this 40gb model out for $399 they need to do it soon as 360 and wii sales are going to be really high over fall season, so could ps3's but i doubt they are going to sell more than the wii or 360 at any given month this year.

X360 had it's price drop in August of course it's numbers went way up, but if you look at past months 130K is actually respectable.

It's not that 130k is not respectable(i bet sony are not saying that), it's the fact that 360 has doubled ps3 in sales from a small price drop, and after the momentum sony gained from E3 and the $100 price drop im sure sony and others were hoping ps3 sales to gradually rise, not rise for one month then start to slip back down.

The console war is far from over but sony could lose allot of ground(which they already have a big amount to make up) over this fall season as it's lokking very likely sales of 360 are only going to grow month over month especially the last week in september and the month of october, halo 3 is a huge system seller and it's going to move some systems over the fall season.

I certainly dont think it's desperate times or "the end of ps3" or anything like that but its definitly bad news, and sony have been doing everything right since E3 if sony do have this $399 40gb ps3 they need to get it on shelves soon.

I honestly do not think halo 3 will push 360's of the shelf, simply most people who will by halo 3 already have a 360

People are right sony needs to bring out a cheap console for $400 asap!!! we are going to get our assed kicked with halo 3 in september and october, although we get R&C in october, it's not good enough sony needs to stop with this ps2 **** and focus on the ps3, It's great we have blu-ray players as well but I cant help think sony f'ed us over with that one now, instead of a blu-ray player give us a better graphics card, I almost think Blu-ray was one gen to early because the price was to high...

obviously people will go the console with the most games right now.(IMO the wii is only winning because its the cheapest.)

but 2008 will be better.

C'mon of course halo 3 is going to push 360's of the shelf, do you think the the 280k 360's sold last month were soley for the $30 price drop of course it wasnt a big part of that would have been the impending release of halo 3. or even if that sales increased could be contributed to bioshock, then halo 3 will push more 360's than bioshock.

So if thats your logic couldnt the same be said for games like mgs4, no i dont think so i think mgs4 will sell systems, and i definitly think halo 3 will sell systems, microsoft are not doing a 10 million dollar marketing campaign for nothing, they want halo 3 to push systems, halo 1 pushed systems at launch halo 2 pushed systems, and halo is now even bigger through out the world it will push systems.

sep/octnpd numberswill prove if halo 3 pushed systems, but i would bet my 360/ps3 and all my games that halo 3 pushed systems in august also, only way of finding that out is to survey the 280k of people and asked why they bought it.

I respect your opinion but big blockbuster games always push systems and IMO halo 3 will push allot more systems this fall.

I agree. I haven't heard about a $399 system, but that would be good. If they are going to come out with a cheaper system though, now isn't the time. They should wait until Holiday sales are in full swing. It's all about timing

It's a rumour thats floating about, gamespot mentioned it on the hotspot.

A $399 40 gb ps3(maybe with spiderman 3 packed in) and a $499 80gb ps3 with spiderman 3 packed in.

Yeah i think now is the time, the holiday season has basicly kicked off, with october being the begaining of the fall season, so to have the system out in september get some advertising going build a little momentum for the holiday season i think that would be a good move.

The ps3 doesnt really have the software libary yet but its got some great selling points and at $399 its a bargain, i paid £425($850) and i think it was a bargain.

Im sure they could sell some hardware at $399, it would definitly be a good move, hopefully they do it.

We need to realize that even though microsoft had the jumpstart this gen, the PS3 outlasts the 360 in the future years, microsoft is gonna have to put up another console in order to stay in the race,

The statistic i really would like to no is, how many 360s have been sent back to microsoft. That would be an interesting stat

Well PS3 has like no killer apps. So why would anyone wanna buy one? I mean its a great system that lacks great games. (from a casuals prospective)... plus they need to drop the price.. like really low, and make better ads. We got a long way to go...

If the rumor of the 400$ PS3 is true, Sony will be fine through-out 07-08 - and I'd be willing to bet we'd see another Pricedrop during the later part of 2008.

I personally think Sony will be dropping the price mainly due to the fact they're fighting two battles here - the format war, and the console war. Dropping the PS3 price, and, if true bundling the PS3 with Spiderman 3 works towards both their goals. After the Paramount/Dreamworks announcement I pretty much expected some large, large moves on Sonys part - dominating the format war will be highly profitable for Sony, and I don't see them passing the opportunity to cash in on this holiday season by.

If they don't drop the price - well, that'll suck for Sony - but I don't think these rumors which many assumed to happen are just fabricated. We'll see soon I suppose.

Without install base, no lead platform. Without being lead platform for developers, PS3 is screwed.

And it pains me to say it.

It's lead Platform on the titles that matter this Holiday season - Unreal Tournament 3, Haze and Burnout. And Call of Duty 4 looks to be a draw between both platforms.

But I do agree about the install base, it needs to be fixed - developers like their games to sale (go figure), and without an extremely positive Holiday season... I really think that will take a large chunk of Sonys armor. But, like I mentioned above... everything is pointing towards the rumored 40Gb model - we'll just have to see if it takes form.

Dont worry guys. When you look at the last NPD for Japan and NA the PS3 outsold the 360 by 60k, this time after the 360 price drop the 360 outsold the PS3 when you factor both regions in by around 60k. The 360s sales are gonna slowly drop after its big price drop month and then you will see how much of a benefit it is for the PS3 to sell consistently worldwide as opposed to the 360s dependence on one reagion.

Exactly - Everything is just working against Sony right now. Paramount/Dreamworks announcement, 360 price drop, Halo 3 with it's ridiculous amount of hype and somewhat lacking sales. 130k isn't bad for a console of this price, but it's not where sony needs to be obviously.

Announcing the 40Gb model at 399$, especially if it includes Spiderman 3 - along with the great lineup of games that recently came out, along with the others coming this year would really put things back into Sonys court. Not to mention the 99$ PS2, which would also keep things going in Sonys favor. I dunno, but the TGS is just the perfect time for such an announcement, right before Halo 3 comes out.

In my opinion there has to be some big news coming, or the Halo 3 hype will be inescapable this year - and the PS3, and many of the awesome looking games coming this year will suffer. It won't be the end for PS3 if they don't do something obviously, but it'll be a big set back. Given the fact that Sony denied to comment on this makes me think it'll happen, and, like I mentioned before... I really hope it does.

even if they did, I still dont think 2007 is sony's year

but at the same time, the world isnt going to end on december 31, 2007.

you'll see the ps3 really take off in 2008 with all the major blockbuster games

If Sony rebounds out of this one like before, I will be amazed and proud at the same time.

If not.. Then *** ****** **** ****......

It will be truely amazing if they get atleast 2nd place though. I mean really, this isn't Sega, and this isn't the old Nintendo. Sonys foes are well... for lack of better term STRONGER. And Microsoft sure issnatching those exclusives.. just like Sony did a decade go, screwing Nintendo's out of their exclusives. But how the heck is the 360 getting them with DVD O_o. Argh, oh wellz I'm going to own all systems but I'm still puzzled by this.

If the Elite outsold the PS3 alone (if) I would lose all hope lol. Say it aint so lol.

I sure hope MGS4, GT5 and FFXIII save the day.

It''ll sure even things up, there's no doubting that - a PS3 for 399 with Spiderman 3? Many people don't know PS3 can play Blu-Rays, or what Blu-Rays even are - bundling the movie with the PS3 would be a great move on Sonys part.

Well, since the PS3 has no crazy system sellers this holiday and the xbox has about four billion of them, things are looking tough for the PS brand until february 2008. I expect the sales gap to get much worse over the coming weeks.

I really wish that Sony would make a system seller or five on the console, for once. Or just buy some company and put their game on the PS3. I have no problem with that is it means that the console keeps its head above water and gets a chance to shine and get lots of games on it.

I sure hope MGS4, GT5, and FFXIII don't pound on the competition too bad. It's just painful to watch that kind of a beatdown.

Hoshslatz

don't jump the gun, let's see how the market is once the ps3 ACTUALLY CATCHES UP to the 360/wii. I don't see it happening in the near future whatsoever ( talking about 2008/09).
That's going to be the key for Sony right there, they need to find a way to get PS3 down to $400. I think a 40 GB PS3 would be a great idea, but I don't see it happening until at least mid-2008.

We'll know soon - hopefully this "mole" is as accurate in this as he/she was in their last predictions. To me, from a standpoint that I can see Sony in - it makes sense. They just recently put billions into their games divsion, and taking a loss on selling a 40Gb PS3 for 400$ would pay off for Sony I'd imagine. You're not only getting consoles on the market to buy software, you're also getting millions of potential Blu-Ray customers... and that is huge.

It reminds me alot of the N64 and PS1 war back in the day. N64 was beating the crap out of the PS1 for the first 1 to 1.5 years before a little game called FFVII came out.

I am hoping thats all it will take. Couple of killer apps. Also this whole FFVII remake rumors, if that turns out to be true, history will be repeated.

Yeah I am personally not worried about it...yet. PS3 is just warming up with its line up. If this is the same story which I highly doubt when MSG4, GT5, KZ2, Tekken 6, FF13 and others come out next year, then I will worried. 2007 is Xbox's year. It took them time too to get to this level with Gears, H3 and others.

People just love getting hysterical. As I say again, the console doesn't begin until Sony unleashes their Killer Apps next year. MS has already done to a certain extent with H3 and Wii with Metroid and Galaxy later this year. Solid will show the way.

Yeah im not worried, 130k for a console which hasnt found its killer app yet is really good. I expectthe rest of the year to to have just as wide a sales gap just because of the halo factor maybe even mass effect will hit AAA. However i really do think that 2008 is the year where the tide turns. Look at whats on slate for the ps3, so far the 360s only potential killer app is NG2 for 2008 which is not goodnews if your an ms fan.

130K for the PS3 isn't bad but this news is still troubling. Sony is getting doubled up and Xbox360 still has there MOST IMPORTANT game to come out. PS3 ya hasn't had a killer app yet but is that a good thing or a bad thing? Maybe Sony should have done something quick instead of waiting around to get owned by the other two companies they thought they were easily going to walk over. I like my PS3 but Sony needs to be smart about this and make the right moves in the next few months. Really...they do .
