Who would have thought that this day would come? Sony Computer Entertainment and Immersion announced today that both companies have agreed to put an end to their ongoing legal dispute and enter into a business agreement to incorporate Immersion's patented force feedback technology into future "PlayStation format products." Whether this means that the technology will be incorporated in future versions of the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller is still unclear, although what other "PlayStation format products" could they be talking about?

"We are pleased to have put this litigation behind us," said Immersion CEO Victor Viegas. "Our new business agreement with Sony Computer Entertainment is specifically intended to enable advanced vibration capability for the benefit of the PlayStation gaming community. We are happy to provide our technology in this regard and hope to make technical proposals very soon with respect to use of our technology in the PlayStation products."

As part of the agreement reached between the two companies, Immersion will be granted the full amount dictated by the District Court -- this includes damages, pre-judgment interest, and legal fees. The agreement also provides Sony with expanded rights with respect to Immersion's patents. No additional financial details were revealed, but it is expected that the termination of the litigation will have no material impact on Sony's consolidated earnings forecast announced on January 30, 2007.

"We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers," said Kazuo "Kaz" Hirai, of Sony Computer Entertainment. "We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

First of all the article was written on Jan 27. Secondly, if you read the title its Playstation Predictions as in IGN's predictions for 2007.

This IS official, although I've gotten used to the lack of rumble. I'm now gonna hold off in buyung more sixaxis controllers until Sony sets something in stone. Could ?Kojima finally get his wish for MGS4? With it remaining exclusive this will sure be a system seller. 2007 is definitely the year for entertainment period, this includes movies as well!!!

This is crap!!! Sony should just make their own rumble. Why Immersion? I hate rumble anyways. At least they should make the rumble better this time.

LINK people? Where's the link? the first link that was posted was just an IGN editor talking about what should happen in terms of rumble. That was written over a month ago.

They originally said they removed rumble because of sixaxis. Now it was because of the Law Suit. If it does come back it wouldn't be anytime soon.

Maybe not for you but the majority do like rumble. You can always take it off if you don't like it.

Funny how just a week or so ago people were talking about rumble saying it was last gen. That rumble was just a cheap trick and sixaxis was the future. Sony was saying that they didn't add rumble because it would mess up the sixaxis controls. Now they're saying it's going to immerse the players even more into the games. So all the talk about not putting in rumble because of sixaxis was a lie???? Hmmmmm

Hmmm, I have a question. If Sony does bring back the rumble, what are all of us SIXAXIS controller owners going to do? I have 2 of them and I don't want to spend all this other money for another controller with rumble and motion sensors in it. :|

I think it's complete BS for early PS3 adopters to have to buy a new controller for the rumble feature. It really gives Sony a negative image to show they were wrong leaving rumble out and still selling the PS3s regardless.

Don't miss rumble and don't really care that it's coming back. I'll only buy a new controller if Kojima implements it into MGS4, since he's the only one I feel took real advantage of it.

I think rumble isn't that good. Des that mean I don't want them to implement it with the controller? No. Most people arguing against rumble were just stating that rumble isn't that big a deal and isn't something that makes or breaks a console experience, which is something I still think holds true. However I and all the other people saying rumble isn't a big deal wouldn't not want it implemented into the PS3 controller. I don't think there was anyone that actually said that if sony had the opportunity to put both in they would rather have them forget about it ad not integrate it into the sixaxis, especially when you can toggle rumble on or off. Why am I even saying this? I think you already know this anyway and are just oblivious to the facts.

Only in some games. I've always wondered if the Rumble is the reason that I went through a lot of controllers. Seems like the more moving parts the shorter the controllers last. Plus, the more rumble, the less battery power my controller will have. I'll only turn on rumble in some games.

Its not just a rumor anymore its true..and I'm happy too, if only to shutup the fanboys. Instead of saying "well I don't particularly care" (which was true) I can say "Would you rather they NOT have it? Oh yeah, you would because you are a fanboy."

Considering they are using the new immersion tech theres no proof it was a lie that it wouldn't work.

Now that is some encouraging news! :D

Nice to see Sony finally reconsider and pay attention to what their customer base, game developers, partners and licensees have been telling them on this issue. Hopefully we'll see some new controllers and upcoming games/updates to support this available soon, so that all PS3 users will have the choice to play with or without rumble, with or without motion sensing, or however they want.
