[QUOTE="munu9"]It's a 1080p. But it's an old one. No 120Hz, no HDMI 1.3, no high contrast :( :Dsvenskamerikan

How old? A fact known to those interested in hdtv's is that the first generation of 1080p tv's can in fact NOT accept 1080p through the HDMI port...(except for the Westinghouse which sucks at everythign else). So what happens is that the hdmi port downgrades the 1080p to 1080i and then the tv upconverts it to 1080p - good but not true 1080p. What is funny is that those tv's can accept 1080p through the tv tuner that is built in - only problem is of course that nobody broadcasts 1080p.

First generation 1080p is only like 3 years ago if my memory serves me right

It's a perfectly fine 1080p, it does accept 1080p signals. I got the TV about a year ago. I'm just whinning about the better 1080p that came out recently. With there 120Hz smoothing and their HDMI 1.3 and their contrast far superior to my TV's...

I have a 720p/1080i Sony Bravia display. I've disabled 1080i and play games and movies at 720p.

I have a 1080p tv in the house but my parents wouldn't let me use it. I think it makes sense why everyone uses 720p though. Even if you have a 1080p, alot of games still doesn't support it yet, shame though, I tried CoD4 on 1080p and it rocks.

Slightly off topic but I didn;t want to create a new one for a small question.. I use 1080i with a component cable. Wud switching to HDMI make any noticable difference? I'm not too sure if my TV supports 1080p. Wud it make a difference in the 1080i picture?

Yes - component is an analog cable so the digital gets converted to analog and then back to digital in the tv. With a HDMI cable it stays digital all the way - better picture. Also in the near future you will se more hdcp compliant material which cannot go through a component cable.

my TV can display all rez

i use 1080p
adnan_cucak

It can't display all resolutions - it ACCEPTS all resolutions and then converts it to 1080p

Realjohnny - these people just don't get it won't matter what we say. They think that their tv's display 720p because the ps3 is set to it and don't understand that the tv is either a 720ptv, 1080itv or 1080p tv (few exceptions, but sure those aren't represented here). The fact that a tv accepts all formats is something different it doesn't automatically switch.....

All these guys claiming 720p is so much better than 1080i must be smoking crack. They probably also own cheap tvs that max out at 720p. If your tv is native to 1080i leave it at 1080i. It looks best. I've switched my display option on the PS3 from 720p to 1080i and back many times playing many games. COD4, Uncharted, R&C, Sega Rally, Dirt, etc. There is no real differance in the picture. In1080i the picture is slighty sharper because the resolution is higher. 720p is lower resolution, not better.

REALJohnnyRebel
Most of the simpler HD TV's have a resolution of 1366 X 768 pixels. So trying to squeeze a 1920x1080 resolution on it doesn't make much sense, since the tv itself doesn't even have that many pixels. So a tv that can HANDLE a 1080i signal doesn't always mean that it can DISPLAY it properly. On most simple HD TV's a 1080i signal gets downsampled to 720i. And why would you want to play in 720i when you can also play in 720p?

I play at 480i on my Hitachi 27'' CRT TV or 720p if I hook it up to my 19'' widescreen computer monitor. I have a HDMI-DVI cable for the latter.

I have a samsung 32 inch LCD HDTV which is 720p native. It can handle a 1080 picture but since its 720p native i just keep the setting at 720p on my PS3. Looks great!

Ok.. So its the number of pixels that never changes, but the resolution of whats being displayed that does? So it would be like the dislpay is using multiple 1080p pixels to create the visual equivalent of a 720p pixel? So when my 1080p tv displays now displaying in 720p, because the screen has the set number of pixels the image only resmbles 720p in quality not specific pixel count? So in that manner it doesn't switch resolution. This is kinda confusing..

WRONG WRONG WRONG - seriously if you are going to reply to someone have some facts straight.

A 720p tv will display 720p - not 720i - that doesn't even exist..... It takes the 1080i picture and makes perfect 720p. If you have a 1080i tv it takes the 720p picture and makes it 1080i that is why the question doesn't make sense and what we are trying to say. You get the game in the format that your tv displays it in - end of story

I will be honest - your question is very confusing to me :) So going to try to re-explain it instead and see if it clears it up for both of us - let me know if I succeed.

If you have a 1080i tv - this tv can only DISPLAY 1080i. So if it gets 1080i it passes it right through - no issues. If it receives 720p it converts it to 1080i. It makes it into 1080i format - it accepts the 720p into the tv and then converts it.

If you have a 720p tv - it can only display 720p (Most often they are actually 768p, but that is just confusing so forget about that). It takes a 720p signal and passes it right through. If it receives a 1080i signal - such as CBS broadcast - then it converts it to 720p.

The best thing to do is set the ps3 up to the native output of the tv and for 720p games the tv will convert and for 1080i games you get the best available picture. What you don't want is 1080i games being converted down to 720p by the PS3 and then the tv to convert it back up to 1080i.....

Makes sense?

Yeah thats makes alot more sense I was just over evaluating with a fury:)..

I wasn't sure about the signal conversion, My PS3 went from component cables on a sdtv, to hdmi cables in a sony bravia 1080p. I did no adjustments the tv and ps3 just automatically optimize resolution. I just hooked it up and turned it on. Whatever the optimal resolution of what im watching or playing is, the tv just does it. Then I'm reading about poeple changing the display to optimize what theyre playing/watching and I thought I was missing out. But i just didnt know that didn't really concern me, as my tv just does it for me. Thanks.

1080p is awesome. I played Assassins Creed on 1080p 50'TV at my friends house and QQ... I really want too now.

I couldnt beleive that was THAT different from a 720p.. I guess thats why games looks better on PS3(Vs 360 720p) when someone got a 1080p TV. So its not just a thought.. hehe
