So PS3 forum, what is the perfect game length in your opinion for each genre? Here are my opinions:

  • action/adventure sandbox = 25-30 hours (inFamous, Grand Theft Auto series)
  • action/adventure platformer = 10-15 hours (Ratchet & Clank series)
  • action/adventure mix = ~20 hours (Jak and Daxter series, Jak 2 to be specific)
  • action/adventure shooter = 10-15 hours (Uncharted series)
  • hack n' slash = ~10 hours (God of War)
  • action RPG = 20-25 hours for story, ~50 hours for 100% completion (Kingdom Hearts series)
  • FPS = 10-12 hours (Resistance series)

Those are pretty much all the genres I'm interested in really. I haven't tried JRPGs, but I will eventually. Let me know if I'm missing anything.

Hack n Slash and FPS campaigns need to have at least the double of lenght. I enjoy all the crazy action in those genres so much that when I realize is already over.

I agree. Even the numbers I listed are slightly above average for most games in those genres.

I couldn't care less about how long or how short a game is. I generally want at least 15 hours of entertainment, but I don't think a game can be too long for its own good, as long as it manages to keep me interested.

You contradicted yourself all over. You don't care how short a game is but you want at least 15 hours. You don't think a game can be too long but it will be too long as soon as it loses your interest. You should think about what you're gonna say next time and articulate your point better. :P

I said I generally want at least 15 hours of gameplay. If a game is very short but still manages to satisfy all around, it can last me three hours for all I care and I will think of it as well-spent money (think Portal). Not many games can pull that off though, so 15 hours is generally an okay length. I should have been clearer on this point, you're right.

I don't think there's anything ambiguous about my other point though. I said "I don't think a game can be too long for its own good, as long as it manages to keep me interested". How is this contradictory? If I play a 150 hour game and have fun all the time, that's no problem to me. If I play a ten hour game and bore myself to death, that is a problem.

Well yes, to an extent, but I wouldn't say it's a genre thing :P

I guess the point of this thread was just to discuss what lengths match well with what genres. Regardless of the amount of variety in an FPS or hack n' slash, it's gonna get stale after 15 hours. But for a sandbox game or a mixed-genre action/adventure game, 15 hours just isn't enough to get the full satisfaction of everything there is to do in the game.

That's part of the reason I was disappointed with Jak 3 ... it was too short for me to enjoy it all.

Anyway, that's why I feel it is a genre thing, but feel free to disagree.

I don't think any game should be less than 15 hours long, but if the story is on the short side I will be content with enough extra content to make up for it. MW2's spec ops missions is a good example.

  • JRPGs: 40-60 hours
  • WRPGs: 60+ hours
  • Action/Adventure (Darksiders, Uncharted, Ratchet, etc.): 12-15 hours
  • Hack n' Slash: 10 hours
  • Sandbox: 20+ hours

It totally depends on the game. All good games should be longer and all bad games should be shorter. :P

why would you want a short game experience??? all games should be over 20 hours.... I loved GOW3 but I wish it was longer after I beat it there's no reason to play anymore unless the game has multiplayer which all games should (I dont understand how adding 1 simple feature makes a game worse just dont play it if you have a problem with it)....

I can't justify spending full price on anything that is less than 12 hours.

A good RPG for me should be at least 40 hours, and the longer the better. Ideally I want 60-70 but that's not always the case so I'm fine as long as it gets up over 40. For pretty much all other genres I'd say 15-20 hours is a good time but most action games seems closer to the 10-15 area which is still fine with me.

I'm basing my opinion on the lengths of games that I've played and enjoyed thoroughly and completely. I could probably add several hours to those figures, but those lengths are good enough to satisfy me.

That's a really tough question as it depends on the game. Some games from the same genre might have different time expectations based on gameplay and storyline. For example I thought Halo 3 was a really long dragging single player game whereas Bioshock felt too short.

Also it's important to note my opinion is also based on the price I paid for the game :). Ie I thought Burnout Paradise was great however I only paid $15 for it so I might not have had the same opinion for an $80 game.

  • Action/Adventure Sandbox
    e.g. Prototype, inFamous, Assassin's Creed
15 hours to complete, up to 30 to 100%

  • Action/Adventure
    e.g. Uncharted, Tomb Raider
    15housr to complete, 20 to 100%

  • Hack n Slash
e.g. God of War, Dante's Inferno, Fable
    10 hours to complete,up to 20 for 100%

  • Action RPG / WRPG
    e.g. Fallout 3, Mass Effect,
30-40 hours to complete, 60 hours for 100%

  • Turn based/Traditional RPG / JRPG
e.g. Final fantasy, Eternal Sonata, Breath of Fire
40-60 hours to complete, 80 hours for 100%

  • FPS
    e.g.Killzone, Halo,Bioshock
10-15 hours to complete SP, Irarely get 100% if MP levelling is required.

  • Puzzle
    e.g.Portal
5-10 hours to complete, Up to 20for 100%

  • Racing
    e.g. Forza, Gran Turismo
20 hours to complete, up to 40 hours for 100%

  • Sports
    e.g.NBA2K, Fifa 10, Tiger Woods 9, etc.
5-10 hours to complete, indefinite replay value.

I'll add more if I think of other genres :)

EDIT : Sorry for all the edits. Stupid bullets and colors make it really hard to read on these forums sometimes. Hopefully the format I ended up with is ok.
