Removal of: voices, free exploration, extra dungeons and bosses and a entire story chapter entirely overshadows the addition of a handful of new choises of what is/was and forever will be a silent protagonist

P3:P Will be great for those who have not experienced this game in its superior format but for the rest there is little to no reason to spend 30$ on what is 95% identical or wattered down

RPGFan home of RPG reviews:
James Quentin Clark avid fan of the SMT series had this to say:

To me this game felt too explicitly like a cash-in. It does not add much to the SMT mythology nor is it in any way an improvement on the original – much worse, it is a downgrade. RPGFan

P3P cannot stand on its own since it cuts content and does not improve on the core gameplay. Don't bother with it if you have never played Persona 3 – get FES instead. RPGFan

I'll wait for some more reviews.

EDIT: Why does this guy sound like he expected a wastly improved game from a quick port? I get his complains with the content that has been cut but I don't understand how it's really a bad thing that a port don't add to the game's mythology?

I've never played P3 and will probably pick up the PSP version because I like to play the game on my PSP instead of dusting off my PS2 again.

1. Voice acting still exists. At least in the Japanese version (hopefully there'll still be voice acting for the NA version).
2. You can still freely explore Tartarus.
3. I assume the "entire story chapter" and "extra dungeons and bosses" is The Answer. The Answer doesn't do much. It's rather... meh. Female main story > The Answer.
4. It's a late port, so it's perfectly normal for it to have little new content. Just like many people didn't buy Chinatown Wars when they already had the DS version of it.

Plus, there's new personae, the ability to control teammates, and much more tweaks to the battle system (to make it similar to P4, which is good). Just watch gameplay videos on YouTube if you don't believe me.

EDIT: I disagree with RPGFan's review. Aside from graphics, nothing has been toned down. Battles are still the same, no glitches/slowdown/stupid bugs whatsoever. Plus, Tartarus is still fully 3D, and that's the core of the game (not social links).

That's the problem with popular series. Developers know they can be lazy and fanboys will still pony up the cash out of obsession. I lost interest in P3P less than an hour in. Wish they'd spend more time on P5 rather than this nonsense

Since when was this considered the best edition anyway? And yes, I agree that FES is the definitive version. I'll still get it though, just as a novelty item :P I probably will end up playing a little...

lol. its a psp, of course it has limitation and cant have all the things the ps2 version had. but the makers were able to make up for it, and was able to add a female protagonist to make the game fresh somehow and with some gameplay tweeks.

Still getting it. And I have the CE of P3 and also P3 FES. So, whatever. Playing the story from a different standpoint, and hitting guys instead of girls will certainly prove to be interesting, in a weird way, yet still, interesting. And, having full control of your teammates will make the gameplay much better, instead of hoping for them to work properly.

I wish they'd spend more time working on an actual Shin Megami Tensei game than another Persona game, I want a game that uses either the Nocturne battle system or a completely new one. ;)

Then you'll be happy in March when Strange Journey is released.

You would be suprised, sony demands extra exclusive content for all late ports meaning that in nearly all cases of PS1 and PS2 games that are ported to the PSP the PSP actually has the superior version. Good examples of this are disgaea 1, disgaea 2, parappa the rapper, guitar hero, valkyrie profile etc Afcourse quality is not guaranteed in this process as mana khermia while having extra content to keep ypu entertained longer also suffers from horrible loadtimes and lag due to poor porting. P3:P is also looking to land in this group where vast amounts of content was stripped to make room for the exlcusive alternate path.

Vast amount of content was stripped? Aside from The Answer, the only thing removed from this version is the ability to move around freely when outside of the main dungeon. Persona 3 is a very large game, and these concessions were made purely to make the game work on the PSP. Graphically the game has been somewhat downgraded, but that is pretty much a given. What extra content IS there is more than enough to make the purchase worth it in my eyes.

I have to partially disagree, leveling social links (what took up 70% of the gameplay for me) is a heavily wattered down version of what visual novels offer, what made up for this was the cutesy stylised animations and voice overs - breaking out this important element reduces one of the games main elements to nothing more than dry text processing. Persona's borderline broken combat is less than spectacular if they also lay the hurt on its story elements there is nought left of what makes it a memorable game

That's you. I believe exploring Tartarus is supposed to be the main objective of the game. The fact that P3P's battle system is better than that of FES urges me to buy this game. No longer must I wait for my brain-dead teammates to finish their turn. No longer must I witness the stupidity of my teammates when fighting certain enemies on hard difficulty. Even better, P3P's battle system is identical to P4's. And P4's battle system is awesome.

Yes, some PSX and even some PS2 ports can whind up superior but the case of P3 is that its a game that has to be toned down on a graphical level ontop of content level (gameplay). Games that put the PS2 hardware to great use arent going to port well to the PSP, like Mana Khemia as you said.

I'm such a huge Shin Megami Tensei fan that I'm still going to get the PSP version even though I own the other 2 versions. Besides, there is nothing better than Persona on the go.

Yeah, I agree. This guy thinks that people are going to be deciding to buy either FES for PS2 or P3P for PSP. Man I would love to have the time to sit down in my basement and fire up my PS2 to play FES but between work and a wife and kid, handhelds are about all I get my hands on.

You can just jump right in if you want. I wouldn't even bother with the first one (especially the PSP version), but the 2nd one is quite good. It won't affect your playthrough of Persona 3 though as none of the games are connected story-wise.
