So I noticed something odd the other day. My PS3 seems to make an incredibly low humming sound when a disc is in the drive. You can barely hear it, if there is sound in the room you can't hear it at all. Only when it's silent I notice it. It has some correlation with a disc being in the drive because if it's make the noise and i eject it immediatly stops. It hasn't affected my systems performance at all, it's just kind of annoying. Does anyone know what this could be? Has this happened to anyone else? Or is this just a normal sound that i just never noticed and i'm super paranoid? I already talked to Sony, they said it's nothing to really worry about. Though I always like a second opinion.

you're too paranoid. Its normal... it occurs when a game is loading (the disc is rotating in the drive) or when the fan goes off when the ps3 cools itself...perfectly natural.

I had a system break on me once last spring so now every little thing I notice worries me. Thanks for the post.

the disk is rotating at speeds that would cut your fingers...so it is going to make noise.

Sit back further from console when playing and stop worrying so much,i mean,if we were all to sit with our ears to our consoles when playing then we'd all be worried to death about all the strange noises going on-Just remember-Nothing lasts forever no matter how much you worry.

thats nothing, my ps3 broke and sony sent me a refurbished one, and after playing for about 1-2 hours, it sounds exactly like a lawn mower.
