The demographic has been increasing as there are more women gamers than ever before, especially with such variety in games now, it's way more than just either destroying stuff or cutsy Mario games. The most difficult portion of women to get gaming though is that of mothers or older women, bc right now it's really just lots of high school/college/20-something single women.
Dont alot of women already play on the consoles like the PS3 and 360 then again my sister-in-law only likes to play mario games so i could be wrong.

Okay then, either way that's a little closed-minded of you. A console can appeal to a woman for many reasons, a lot the same as men. And just because a woman doesn't look like she plays games doesn't mean she can't be a  level 90 druid in WoW.
women do cell phones and pc's. Not very many do consoles on their own. And being married to a women or living with one who happens to play your system does not count. She has to do it on her own.
Simplistic games like Little Big Planet appeal to women, my girlfriends sister has a playstation and all she ever uses it for are games like Little Big Planet, Little Big Planet Karting, Modnation Racers, Final Fantasy, same for my girlfriend too and her two younger sisters. My sister played the heck out of Rachet and Clank: A crack in time. I think Sony needs to invest more in IP's that resemble the Crash Bandicoot of the PS1 if they want to tap more into that casual market because a poster child like Mario is why Nintendo got alot of that market on lockdown
ok so im a girl and i love video games evry thing from the mario to banjo kazuwee to call of duty to halo and FF and every thing inbetween i been playin since i was 6 and have been a gamer for a long time i for one would think its awesome to have games and controlers and systems geared more to us female gamers, i love the new 360 controlers over the xbox ones there smaller and fit better. i dont car it that atical is fake or not. i think its a good ideal
Oh no, Sony wants to increase their demographic, the world is ending. While the sun isn't really a good paper to go by, one point (whether real or not) makes sense, and that is bringing in female devs (or male) to make more than shoot em' up games. If appealing to women means adding meaningful characters and a good story, then by all means please make these games.
But honestly, a lot of gamers need to grow up, it's like they don't acknowledge women as humans and if they play a game it's the worst thing in the world.
I never said women dont like to play PS3 and 360 games i actually said i thought alot of women already play it already the only problem is most women i talk to dont even know how to use a controller and when they do play games they play games that are like little big planet or mario games or games that are in that range i cant even name 10 women who play games like call of duty or uncharted or shooting games. I just hope sony doesnt put out tons of kid games for women to play like nintendo does cause im more into the games like call of duty and uncharted.
As long as they keep making adult based games like the PS3 has im fine with it but when they start making alot of games like the wii has thats when i have a problem if you want those kind of games buy a wii dont put them on the PS4. The 360 tryed doing that putting kid games on there system to bring in more people and they got bitch slapped by the hardcore followers.

While all those articles and people saying that women make up 50% of gamers is total bull there are women who play a lot of video games and enjoy the hobby. This article seems to be saying they are trying to get games like Angry Birds on the systems to attracted the Iphone/Facebook gamers to appeal to people that don't really play games.
 That wouldn't be a problem if it just meant for female characters or something, but all they want to do is create more tablet type games? Seems unnecessary, just make good games damn it.

I doubt it will effect anything. It just looks like they want to bring in those types of developers.

thats cool but i just can't take anyone seriously with gaming stats on women anymore. i once heard on the news or something that female gamers now make up 50% of the gaming population and after that i was like okay lol this is getting ridiculous.
How incredibly shallow to think that female gamers means casual gamers. As if the complexities of intrinsically shallow mainstream AAA games are beyond their comprehension.
When stories and characters go beyond targeting young males like they have been for the past 3 decades and online gaming communities mature past the cesspools of humanity we'll see a lot more open variety in supposed audiences.

Who the hell do you people hang out with? I don't play that many games anymore, lack of time, but in my past I have the experience that my female friends like all types of games. They especially like Call of duty (because it's cool and everyone is playing it). Rock band, grand theft auto were also favourites.Â

So you can't make good games that appeal to women? I'm not sure if you people understand, but in order to win over the console market you need to appeal to everyone. That's the reason nintendo won this gen. If sony can maintain there hardcore approach, while still opening to the diveristy of gamers, they'll win this gen. You can't make god of war, uncharted, final fantasy and expect to win over the 100 million+ plus potential console owners.

Why is it ridiculous that 50% woman play video games?
I am an older female gamer with kids. I will have to say that Sony is NOT making me want their new system because the PS 3 system is too restrictive as far as accounts, active Playstations systems and the difficulty of signing up kids to the network. Plus the new PS4 looks to be even more of a privacy and security risk for kids and women who are often subject to harassment online. To understand more look at my post "Why I'm not getting Playstation 4 unless..." Also they would have to make alot more games and way more variety and for God's sake enough FPS's!!!!! keep some good ones and enough of the rest.
It wouldn't surprise me at all if 50% of women play games and we don't know about it; because they don't admit it as openly as males. My experience has been that the majority of women (particularly younger women) are pretty hush-hush when it comes to "that" type of hobby because of all the negative stereotypes that come attached with it.
I don't see any problem with it, there are plenty of games for all genders to enjoy. The more people enjoy it, the better. It's not like PS4 won't have traditional "man" demographics anymore.

Also, depending on what study you look at, they'll tell you anywhere from 30-50% of the gaming population is female. I feel like anything higher than 40% is just wishful thinking though...
I realize that women may be a foreign thing to a lot of you. Â The PS4 targetting women would be a good thing seeing as how it would mean more business for Sony. Â
