Its said that the cell processor of the PS3 makes it a console that is too advanced for this era. Developers eventually will learn how to push it to the max, but we know for sure that thats a few years away. With that being said, will the PS3 truly last 10 years as Sony heads claim it will? Your opinion on if you think it will or will not is what I'm interested in reading. This also brings us to when the PS4 is due to hit. I think we will begin to here heavy plans and specs around 2012. Let me know what you think....

You're what I'd call a true BEAST! PS3 JUST CAME OUT AND YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT PS4?! WHAT THE HECK MAN?! My god! Some of you guys never seem to amaze me.
Looks like I am going to be the first person in this thread to say it. (And I can hardly believe nobody has said it already.)
I do not think there will be a PS4. I do not think that Sony is going to recoup their investment in either hardware or software development on the PS3, ever. It's kind of like Spinal Tap. It's a great movie, has lots of fans, people all over the world love it and when they meet the actors and the director they ask them why they never made another movie. They always tell them that when you make a great movie, and everybody tells you it's a great movie, if your great movie didn't make any money, you don't make a sequel to it.

I can see where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. Nintendo has been the underdog of the last couple generations and they've still come back for more. Sony has been top dog for a bit now, I'm sure they've made enough of a profit to weather the storm. Plus, to be fair, MS has had it's fair share of losses (a reported $1B in repairs alone) but I'm sure they'll be back with yet another console in the next generation too. The reason? 1) can't expect to be leader of the pack every year (you can hope for it, but it'd be quite lucky to pull it off). 2) Sony (and MS) both do more than make consoles (their companies as a whole). Sony is a very, very succesful company. They have the funds to funnel into this project to stay afloat for now. Blu-Ray is also taking off, and they have a hand in that too. Sony doesn't have to lead the race to be succesful, they simply need to sell enough units to make a profit. Once again, look at Nintendo.
It's a little early to claim Sony's demise as of right now. The system is barely turning one year old as is.
All some admirable points--but Sony has only a fraction of the liquid assets that Microsoft has. This means that if there is a price war between the two companies, Sony will lose. And Sony has had higher losses to date for their product advancement as well. You might want to point out the billion that Microsoft has laid out for repairs over the lifetime of already-sold 360s, but how does this compare to the almost 2 billion that Sony posted losses for the game division's fiscal year ending March 2007? Sony does a lot of business. In that light they are very successful. But they do not have the assets to maintain losses the way that they have lost on the PS3. Microsoft posted a global net income this past year of 12 billion. Sony? Just barely one billion. Seeing systems on the shelf only one week after launch is something that just did not happen with the 360. This didn't even happen with the PS2. All of the events that have transpired to date put Sony at third place, and developers saw it coming. It is one of the reasons there are fewer games. It's definitely the reason there are fewer games coming, too. Sony doesn't have the money, nor do they year-to-year make the kind of money to combat developers and other partners coming to their senses and going where they can profit.
You don't have to be the leader of the pack to be profitable, Nintendo did it for many years of course, but so does Apple. Where is the third place computer platform? Linux isn't exactly it, being too splintered and ineffective to the consumer. So there IS no third place there, it's a drop off a cliff if you want alternative and you don't want a Macintosh. And the ultimate third-place example, do you remember the TurboGrafx?
Sony's federation of divisions is widely attributed to be a big part of the problem with the PS3. BluRay for games sounds like a good idea and games can always use more memory, but at this point none need it. There is more storage available to BluRay than any game requires or than any team can reasonably develop into a single game given the typical time-frame for release schedules. Oblivion for the PC has more content available with mods, with higher resolution textures and full-featured surround sound audio than you will ever play on the PS3 (or the 360), I just looked at my installation and with things like Qarl's texture enhancement pack and a tonne more of content, additional quests, audio, etc. it was all less than 7.8GB. This fits handily on a DVD. It's clear BluRay was done for movies on the PS3, and this hurt the PS3 as a game machine, when it brought on delays for the PAL market and even fewer units to the earlier launch in other regions than anticipated. And there were STILL units sitting on shelves, only a week after its debut. The price-drop is nothing but a fire-sale on the original model which will not come back once it is gone, Sony very likely has about as many units sitting in warehouses as they have already sold to take the prices south this soon, and the thing is still vastly expensive in other key markets (Europe/PAL). Yes, Sony is very successful, but the game division is not more recently, and the PS2 will not continue to support the PS3 like a proverbial crutch going into next year as more games are moving to other newer platforms that are growing while that one diminishes. Because Sony is so segmented between their electronics, computers, games, movie production, etc. it is a LOT easier for them to pull out of any one market or to drastically alter their m.o. if they ever need to. The analyst gamespot interviewed knows this, and sees signs of it happening already. Not enough proof for you? Why don't I have a PS2 memory card slot under the flap in my PS3 for free? Answer: So you can buy Sony's adapter for more $. Why do they have a memory stick slot there instead? Answer: they're pushing another format again. Why did they have to develop yet another optical format for use with the PSP? They already had MD and Hi-MD discs. No, they wanted to lock you in to another format, one that they could control for their portable movie format, and the PSP suffers because of it similarly to the PS3 with BluRay.
All some admirable points--but Sony has only a fraction of the liquid assets that Microsoft has. This means that if there is a price war between the two companies, Sony will lose. 3ndymionYour forgetting a big factor. Brand loyalty. This not about blind following. But personal choice! Some people like Lexus. Others like Chevy. There are real personal reasons that people like products from one company over another. Price wars are only part of. In fact, M$ could lower their price to $299 and Sony could drop their price to $399 and the PS3 would sell more. Bank on it. Why would someone pay more a so called "alternative" is available for less? Personal value. Oh, and there's also hatred of Microsoft. That's undeniable. And before you bring up Sony hatred. I bet I can find more Microsoft haters than Sony haters. This is very similar to why people love Honda and Toyota. Brand loyalty.
The RAM is only an issue if you write code for a PC/360. The Cell/RSX architecture doesn't work like the PC/360. The Cell's SPUs do a lot of pre and post processing. And once the devs start to get better use of these SPUs you'll start to see the longevity of the PS3. If the PC/360 is ALL YOU KNOW. Of course it's "hard" to learn the PS3. But this is very typical of American thinking. They think that the world revolves around them. Using a little country slang.... There's more than one way to skin a cat.w[QUOTE="gizmo_logix"][QUOTE="KraigA"]the rams not good enough to make the ps3 last..marth678
wtf how do you know hes american, also what does that have to do with the ps3, imamerican and i dont think the world revolves around me, typical every where else in the world to hate on america
i agree man, why the hell do you people all make fun of americans... its really gettin old... and im sure that some kid from england, or wherever the hell your from has said something about wanting ps4... so shut the hell up man... and honestly ps4 wont be out for at least 7 years... for all the reasons posted aboveuh....I think about I will retire for spending videogames. I feel I'm older! i will keep my collection games and play for my rest life!
GOOD LUCK FOR YOUR LIFE!

Let me think.... If PS4 be out then I will retire to spend videogames that my plan....I will keep to play my PS3 is good enough for me. I'm happy with PS3. I know Sony also successful console on videogame.
I believe that Sony will not be releasing the PS4 for a long while because it will take time to harness the sheer power of the PS3. The Ps3 is the only true next generation console because it is the only of the three that sports a next generation disc drive and the other consoles will need to add that as a standard feature. Also, with the amount of potential left in the PS3's hardware, Sony will not need to make a PS4 when the "xbox 720 and wII" (or whatever they will be called) come out.
Looks like I am going to be the first person in this thread to say it. (And I can hardly believe nobody has said it already.)

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?! You obviously have no idea what you're talking about. They will/might take a different approach next time, but not another system? Right! Yea! SURE!
I am very glad that so many people had few reserves on their opinion on the original topic, though some went another direction with it (arguing specs and dev techniques). For the record, I am more than happy with my PS3 and the only reason I brought this up in the first place is cuz i was looking at it from the responsible adult standpoint....you know...when you get your check, that money is "already spent"? preparing for the next. A lot of you took this too seriously, whining that its "wrong" to discuss this. I don't recall standing outside with a picket sign demanding a PS4 to be relased right now! but, all in all, no matter your views, its an interesting topic. I just know that technology continues to get closer to what was only fantasy 50 years ago. I just hope i live long enough to see one of Star Treck's holodecks!:P
Actually sony has already plans for playstation 4, 5 and even 6! This became clear when Ken Kutagari gave an interview for EE Times. " Playstation 3 is on the market so we can speak freely for the next Sony steps",states Kutagari. He revealed that he has already plans for playstation 4, 5 and even 6- each one of them will be network ariented. i found and translate some from this article- http://www.sandanski.us/index.php?news=363.

Yeah, too bad he got promoted all the way out of Sony CE. His plans are officially crap now. Who the heck took over hardware development, anyways? Its sad to think, but what if there isn't even anyone there planning for this? We've known about Cell since the PS2 came out, without Ken who the heck are we gonna look to?
PlayStation 3 is here to stay and will provide the same great experience we had since PS1 area.
Ignoring that fact is more then foolish.
Once PS4 is ready, it will be released. Sony always went their own way when setting standarts, today and future is no different.
U r so right, hey u know what I gotta say somethin' I didn't even get my Ps3,all I got is a nice little Ps2 and tht is it,so can all of u get satisfied with what he got, besides I think the ps3 is gonna kick it up to12 hole years.B-k2020
Dude, I know you're new here, but dang. You just bumbed a massively old thread. That's a no-no.
Eh, this is my theory if it makes you feel any better...
PS1 Released in US 1995.
Ps2 came out in the US 5 years after, so 2000
PS3 came out 6 years after, so 2006 (US)
PS4 may come put in 7 years after, so 2013 (US)
As for Europe they got the console about 6 months later or so. Probably 2014 for Europe.
Just an estimate though.

Kaz Hirai. I dunno, but he seems kinda good though... And they did a reorganization the entire department. All I know Ken Kutaragi was pretty "controversial" during PS3's release. Oh and he did make the PS2 a platform hard to develop for though if i remember correctly. Please Log In to post.
