I have the earforce PX21 and to be honest that is by far better than i thought it would be, with the DSS you are looking at a bit more money and to me uneccessary as the headphones alone with the expander option are plenty.Tritton Ax Pro Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Gaming Headset

Do these "audiophile" brands, make gaming specific headphones?Neither, get an audiophile brand from audio technia, akg, senhieser, etc. and a usb mic.

Surround emulation is patently unneccesary in headphones, not to mention expensive. Turtle Beach PX21s ($80 on average, lower on Amazon, etc) are fantastic.

yep, do this. id recommend getting the astro mixamp and either some sennheiser hd555 headphones, or audio technica ad700 headphones. the ad700s will offer a huge soundstage and better clarity but the hd555 will be a little better in the bass. either of these headphones will be much better than any of the "gaming" headsets on the market. and if you need a mic, just get a calman clip on or califone mic off ebay for like 10 bucks or something. and a good thing about getting those audio headphones is they sound great out of an ipod as well.

if you play first person shooters competitively, then surround sound makes a huge difference, however if you just play for fun then gettin the surround sound probabaly isnt necessary, although it is pretty cool hearing the directional audio. it's more immersive in my opinion.
The AXPro aren't really emulated. Each cup has a rear, front, center, and sub woofer speaker.Surround emulation is patently unneccesary in headphones, not to mention expensive. Turtle Beach PX21s ($80 on average, lower on Amazon, etc) are fantastic.

Professional sound engineer for the last 30 years here, and I find a standard stereo field to be much more helpful when playing competitive FPS. To each their own, but "surround" actually confuses zeroing in on footsteps, gun fire, etc. for me. I'm very, VERY picky about what I will listen to, the comfort of headphones, audio blending options, etc. and I find the Turtle Beach PX21s to be above average in all catagories, especially when you figure in price.
For the record, I use a lot of Sennheiser mics, etc. and they are an excellent company so that is a very valid suggestion. As far as the surround, it's a "to each their own" thing. I won't say it's a waste or insult anyone for their taste, certainly - I didn't mean to sound so heavy-handed. Just weighing in.
