Why does it matter if a cutscene is pre-rendered or done in real time? I see sites always making a big deal out of this.

Because usually pre-rendered scenes have a better quality? Personally, I don't care about this in this gen because even real-time rendered videos look fantastic on the ps3 and they allow some dynamic (like having alternative costumes even in the scenes or see the actual weapon equipped within the scene)

Usually it's used as an advertisement to show how good their graphics are. If it's pre-rendered, they could have made it using a supercomputer, and give it bluray movie quality. If it's real time, you are seeing what the actual game looks like.

Ill take real-time over pre-rendered anyday. Not only is real-time using the actual game engine, it keeps you immersed in the game so much more. It's like watching machinima, which I like alot. The only thing pre-rendered is good for is maybe the intro of a game or for advertising.

Pre-rendered = cheating. I want to see the game engine in action at all times.

I agree that it's more immersive when the cut scenes are in-game and when games like Metal Gear and Uncharted blur the lines, it hardly makes any difference.

i prefer real time. pre rendered seems to have crappier animations. and some games actually do show gear and weapons in real time cutscenes.

I remember playing Resident Evil 4 on the PS2. I had the alternate clothing selected for the girl, and all the cutscenes had her back in her original clothing. That was kind of silly.

Personally, with graphics at the level they are today, I'd rather see real-time cut scenes. With real-time, the cut scenes can move in and out of gameplay seemlessly, instead of jerking you out of the action just so you can see a slightly prettier version of your surroundings. Back in the PSOne and early PS2 days, I would have preferred pre-rendered, because it was the only way to see the setting in the way the artist invisioned.
