I played Resistance earlier today then played the Ninja Gaiden demo then turned the PS3 off. Just a few minutes ago, I tried to play Oblivion but when I turned the PS3 on, I couldn't pick my user. The directionnal arrows or buttons didn't work. I did turn the console off with the PS button. I tried to turn the controller off (the PS button works fine) but it still didn't work. I tried to use my second controller but it gave the same results. I turned the console off and turned it on again, no luck. I tried to plug the controller, no luck either. While it is plugged, I turn it off an on, no results. (The lights are flashing to show that it is charging, so it's well plugged).

Anyone got similar problems or an idea to fix that?

update :  And I now think that the problem is with the user select screen and not the controller. As I said, I could always use the PS button to turn the PS3 on or off, and in the PS menu, the X and O buttons were working fine to select or cancel an option. So I doubt it is anything due to the controller not being recognized by the system.

I don't think it's the controller. I've had the same issue, I believe. Your PS3's Bluetooth may not be working while on standby. What I did was: Turn on the system with the power button on the system, plug in the controller, wait for the controller to connect while wired, then unplug the controller, wait a second, and the bluetooth should work. After doing that it has worked just fine.

No idea how to fix it. I'd say give Sony a call and see what they say.  I think the controllers have 90 day warranty on em.

Like a-tek, I am sure that it isn't the controller. The fact that both controllers stopped working at the same time is rather odd, so the PS3 must be the problem. I have the extended waranty on the PS3, so I don't really care. If it would be the controllers and they would have only 90 days, I would have passed that delay.

When you own one, I'll be more than happy to consider your opinion.  Until then, be a good little boy and play in your yard. Not ours.

did you recently upgrade your firmware? Perhaps it was a faulty upgrade?  Eject your disc, put your ps3 on standby then flick off the switch in the back. Let it stay off for about an hour. Turn it back on manually then plug in your sixaxis and turn it on...see if it returns. Sounds like it just suddenly unregistered the controllers...reminds me of the various times I've turned off my bluetooth headset, turned it back on and the ps3 refused to recognize it unless I "reinstalled" the headset via the menu.

No no no don't call Sony, this is an easy fix.

Turn off your PS3, plug the controller in. Now, turn on your Ps3 without using the PS home button. Then, press the PS3 home button and turn the system off.

Now turn on your PS3 using the controller, now, it should continue flashing, press the home button again after 30 seconds, and it should never have the problem again, or at least it should work after some trial and error. It's only happened once, when I turned it off while playing a game using the PS3 controller, but that's just me.

I tried what everyone told me and nothing worked. I don't think it would be a deffective firmware update since I upgraded it over a week ago and played many times since then.

And I now think that the problem is with the user select screen and not the controller. As I said, I could always use the PS button to turn the PS3 on or off, and in the PS menu, the X and O buttons were working fine to select or cancel an option. So I doubt it is anything due to the controller not being recognized by the system.

When all else had failed, try calling Sony. They might have a solution for you over the phone.
