I was browsing through the PS Store and I came upon something along the lines of "PS2 onto HDD". I'm not sure what it is but it's located under Game Add-ons Disc Based. After reading about it from the store it says something about installing PS2 games that are capable onto your HDD.

Could someone explain what this is please?

Thanks!

[EDIT] I think it has something to do with transferring files from the PS2 HDD to the PS3 HDD, could someone confirm please.

Well Final Fantasy XI required the optional hard drive. And at least one other, Resident Evil Outbreak, used it optionally. This download apparently allows these games to work properly on the PS3.

That's news to me. I'll have to check back and see what you found out. Does it cost anything to download? If not, it might be worth trying out just to find out what exactly it does.

Oh. This was posted as I was typing my response. Thanks for the info.

It's just a data patch for PS2 games that could use a HDD. And it doesn't work on systems that don't support PS2 games like the 40 gig PS3. I downloaded it a long time ago and it's completely free to download and use.
