OK, I know that there is a thread right now about PS3 B/C, but I am wondering why if it is only a matter of software (an emulator) that there isn't a download for a PS2 emulator on PSN? Does anyone know why this is and if Sony has any plans on opening this feature up to the people who were unable to get an old PS3? They took the chip out of the original models due to cost but the emulation software is already available. What it comes down to is I just want to play Sly and Mark of Kri on my PS3.

I have no idea. Sony's really cheap, they put the PS3 at such a high price and then complain that the chip that allows BC cost too much. I just don't get it anymore, don't get me wrong though I enjoy playing my PS3, but I've lost some faith in Sony.

Sony is not cheap, they only took it out so that you can afford their console. If you really want to play PS2 games, I suggest you find an older models of the PS3 or purchase a PS2. Trust me.

Even the PS3s that have bc through a emulator have a extra chip in the system to control ps2 functions. Also I would not consider selling something cheaper than it cost to make is cheap by any-ones definition.

the old 60gb and 20gb did b/c through hardware emulation (emotion engine and Graphics Synthesizer) while the motorstorm and mgs4 80gb did b/c through software emulation however it still kept the ps2 Graphics Synthesizer so it was more of a software/hardware ps2 emulation. The newer ps3s have no ps2 hardware in them and sony doesn't appear to be working on a pure software only ps2 emulator for the newer ps3 (is it possible, I'm sure if sony put effort into it.). Yes sony isn't being very smart are they.

the chip cell in ps3 very expensive, 600 USD for one cell only, don't say sony cheap when they lost a lot of money just because the sony sell ps3 to u at the low price, and from the research the sony said most of the customer own ps3 also have ps2, so why have to attack ps2 chip on ps3 ?

First of all, I can tell english isn't a first language so I don't really know what you're trying to say. What I'm saying is, they sell the console at such a high price that they should have enough to money for the chip.

The cell chip that you're referring too only costs five USD more than the current chip they are currently using in the ps3 systems. So with that being said, yes Sony is cheap.

From what I've read, Sony was considering adding it back in, but after they saw the success of GoW: Collections, they decided to focus on high-def remakes instead. That way, instead of people buying used PS2 games, they've got to buy PS3 games, boosting sales. It's a really greedy move by Sony imo.

If Sony were to make an Emulation Software for The Playstation 3. The won't do until the make a Smaller Revision of the PS3. Close to the PS2 9001 series in size. Sony will finally do it then if they do it at all.

Took forever to get Sony to give us 2 analog sticks on the PSP 2. So BC may return to PS3 but not until the Next revision

Two reasons come to mind, they can sell PS2's and they can sell HD collections. Two things that wouldn't happen if they had backwards compatibility.

Because HD collections and PS2's are more profitable... Would you rather spend money implementing something for free that people might not use or do nothing and earn slightly more from HD collection sales and PS2's?

I have a early PS3 that I love playing some of my PS2 flight games on. I wanted to try Socom4, but when I start it up, it wants to upgrade my software 2.60 to 3.56. If I do this, will it hose up my ability to play my PS2 games? Thanks!

Dude people doing these comments are making themselves look dumb. Sorry if i am sounding rude but all this babbling about how much everything cost to Sony and Nintendo is going out of proportion. First for something to cost you what you said you need millions, and manufacturing facilities throughout the world.

It's hard to make a stable working software emulator unless the system is that much more powerful than that system. A good comparison would be the 360 software emulator for the original Xbox and the Gamecube hardware emulation for the Wii. 99% of all Gamecube games work on the Wii with no issues, while something like 50% of all Xbox games work on the 360 with tons of issues. Sony is probably working on a software PS2 emulator that works almost perfectly.... for the PS4.

Upgrading your firmware will not effect the old fat PS3's ability to play PS2 games.

Only two reasons. The PS2 is still selling, and they are making money off of the HD collections people are buying.

They could easily make a software emulation for PS2 games to run on the PS3. Either that or they could just do like they did with the MGS4 bundles, put the graphics hardware back in and run a software/hardware solution.
