Before you freak out and start flaming me hear me out and tell me why I'm right or wrong. Like many of you I bought my PS3 over 6 month ago and ever since I'm amazed ever month that it's not the best selling system out there. It blows my mind that more people want to buy a DS or a GBA then a PS3. Then I see that every month more games are buying new PS2 as well. And if I added the PS2 numbers and the PS3 then everything looks great. So if Sony's selling more legacy systems then Neg-Gen could the PS2 be there biggest enemy. What if we all have it wrong and the PS3 future success doesn't lie in beating the 360 or Wii. No, I say Sony's biggest problem lie with them selves... If you think about it the PS2 is still the best value Sony has to offer. Even there best game release in 2007 was strictly for the PS2 God of War II. So my question is should Sony kill the Ps2 and lose some money now to make more in the years to come. If they keep things as they are now then it may too late. Think about it if you just spent $100 for a new PS2 and another $100 on games\Controller\Memerycard\ etc. Are you going to turn right around and spend another $500 to $700 any time soon for a PS3? I don't think that's going to happen, so basically every PS2 sold today is one less sold PS3. And worse yet is some of them may end up wanting a next gen system after they see how entertaining the PS2 is. So they go the cheaper rout and get one of the other Nex-Gen.

So I say Sony must discontinue the best gaming system ever developed aka the PS2 to save them selves from there own success. Nintendo and Sega had this same issue once upon a time. I know this sounds a bit odd but as long as the PS2 is still on the shelves gamers will be turn away from the PS3 for the much cheaper PS2 with hundreds more games many used at a 70% discount to what it would cost for a new PS3 game that at this time isn't going to be as good as a cheap used PS2 classic. Now I may be wrong however at this rate its coming to be another year before PS3 sales over take PS2! By that time it may already be to late as the comp will be in full swing with discounts on there consoles and a game release rate that is much higher then what PS3 has slated.

Thin this way instead. Every PS2 owner is a potential PS3 owner. Problem solved! But I still can't believe people are buying Wii and DS instead of PS3. The world sure is a crazy place!

i completely agree. This is exactly what I was thinking. Nobody is buying the 1st Xbox or Gamecube anymore. People still want the PS2. Hopefully less and less games are gonna be developed for the PS2 but with rising costs to make a next-gen game, it doesn't seem likely.

Vip,

What you said makes sense.... but I'd kindof hate seeing the ps2 go away... itwas such agreat console with great games... I was playing MGS2:SonsOfLiberty just last night on my PS3 and that game rocks

Sony will need to nix the ps2 at some point and maybe sooner than later. Sony kept the PSOne around for a long time along side of the PS2. They (sony) are probably thinking they can do the same with the PS2 selling along side the PS3. But the PS2 has some really entertaining and awesome games (some are almost next gen quality)...making it tough forsome consumers to justify paying the big bucks for a PS3. But I think the smart consumer will save for the better console. Problem is not all consumers are as smart as us. lol.

I suspect Sony will get rid of the ps2 alot sonner than they got rid of the PS1 for the reasons you described... maybe by middle of next year. Just a guess.

Xbow and Gamecubeare verygood exsamples of what I'm talking about.Just to add to thatonthe software side if you look at these X-Gen systems you'll notice thatsales numbers for classic games likeHelo and Resident Evel 4 have picked up as Nex-Gen buyer are looking to play the best games they missed out on. Each one of these systems have a huge jump in sales for there Classic games from there previous Gens.

This can also be seen on the Sony Classic however many of them are related to the large emount of PS2 still being sold every month. And to make things even worse is Sony going to limit back-ward compatibility by getting rid of the PS2 Chip. This may further push PS2 buyer away when there find out some of there favorite PS2 games will not be of any use with they move onto the PS3. You can't say the same thing with the Wii as everything works from the X-gen to the Nex-Gen. The more I think about it the more I see why Sony needs to kill the PS2.

well the wii is the funnest system plus that has nothing to do with ps3 so bring else where,

i totally agree with the forum creator , ps3 is not gonna get far if sony keeps selling ps2 bc pp l are looking at it this way why pay 600 if theres not many games out on the system instead i could be paying less then 150 for a ps2 and have a vast selection of titles the problem is no one is gonna pay 600 for a measly updaTED xbox360 . they ll wait for new better games to come and maybe a price drop would help , in comparision an xbox360 elite even costs less then the 60 gb model and comes with a 120 gb hdd this is what is gonna hurt sony ,

then you got nintendo whos doing things very different this gen they may not ever have the graphics to compare to ps3./xbox 360 but they got the gameplay they are known for in the snes nes era which is gonna help them out to it is working for them now isnt it , you can tell me what you belive but that still wouldnt matter sony is competing agianst it self by not pulling the plug on ps2 production , the only reason ps2 succeeded is bc it was priced to compete AND WAS the first of its kind , offered backwards compatibility now all 3 sort of have that and nintendo even doubled it by not just letting you dl nes snes n64 game they also let you get turbo fx 16 and genesis titles , sony needs to come up with the games and stop doing what nintendo did back in the n64 era or theyll look at 2 gens without successs

Well to follow along with the TC idea how about Sony is keeping the Ps2 out on the market till they can get the production cost down on the PS3 say till mid to late 08.. Sony then drops the PS3 price say $200 bucks or more, then stops support on the PS2 and hopes tat the price drop and large amount of people with PS2 then jumps on to the Ps3..I also think this would give the average household enough time to move onto HD TV as well..

To add to this don't forget that the total of this gen buyers Wii/360/PS3 is only around 23-24 million. To put that in prospective the xbox last gen sold this amount alone.. We have a long way to go yet..

Anyway just a though ..

keep treating the ps2 gamers with respect and they will become loyal ps3 owners as well. how do you think corporations like ford, chevy and dodge have such loyal fans that cross generations?

mariokart64fan You also have some good points this the Wii giving there Nex-Gen owner all best of all there old systems with out selling them. Xbox is starting this with there Live services. So its back to WHY Give the gamers a choice of old verse new??? Just make them upgrade and give them access to everything. Sony is doing the Exact opposite there giving you a reason to not upgrade, play truly outstanding games for a huge discount, and by the way these great gamesmaynot be available to you if you upgrade to there Nex-Gen offering. Sound crazy doesn't it...but that's what there doing and thats why PS2 is still outselling there Nex-Gen system.

This is the same thing that happened with the PS1 and the fact of the matter is they need the PS2 to keep going. By keeping the PS2 going Sony is reinforcing their brand name security. If they just cut PS2 owners off too soon they leave them no choice but to upgrade and frankly that can create enimty between Sony and its fanbase.Sony sells products with a longer life span and presents their products as a better investment than say MS. MS cut the Xbox off after just 4-5 years showing the public that despite the lower cost they may also be buying a product that will be worthless in roughly half the time of the Playstation brand.

The PS3 won't meet it's doom, because this same stuff was happenin' when the PS2 1st came out. Now Sony would have something to worry about if the PS3 didn't have the backtrack compatibility. But since it does, it can still produce games for the PS2 and 3. They'll jus focus on gettin' those last 5great games for the PS2 out, because you can still play it on the 3. They only thing noteable that the PS2 will get after they start mass producing PS3 games are the sports games. Because even the PSOne was gettin' sports games upgrades up till 04, when its been out for a while. So I think Sony has it figured out. Because if the money's goin' to Sony weather it be PS3 or PS2, they're still gettin' money. And you can't forget about how much cash the PSP brings. Jus wait till areound X-Mas when they have a price drop on the system. Plenty of people are waitin' on that.

Wasn't the ps2 going to be dropped around 2009? Or was that only the games?

Also, the one flaw in your post is that you forget that selling PS2's still make money, although not as much, still.

Because of backwards compatibility the PS3 is fine no matter how many PS2's sell. It just means that developers who aren't ready to move over to the next gen don't have to just yet. I think it's great that Sony continues to make PS2s. This way consumers have a choice on how much they want to pay for a piece of the "PS" brand.

I have a PS2 for 4-5 years now, an XBOX for 2 and a 360 for 1. One of the reason I got a 360 was that I was very happy with my xbox and known that 360 won't let me down and it didn't -until it broke(3 red-lights last month:() Since I had my PC for repairing(needed new PSU) and my 360 on microsoft repair(for a month and still waiting) I suddenly wanted to play some FFX on my PS2. It took me 2 hours to find it, but I am having lots of fun with a PS2, more fun than the day I bought it! So now I need a new next-console, I was going to pick-up a wii, but since lately i enjoy ps2....i save for ps3(since PS2 games can work on it + blu-ray + next-gen games).

As you can see for each person who enjoy PS2 a futare PS3 costumer is born. He will be more likely get a PS3 for his favourite series sequels and to be able to play PS2 games at one console.

The world is a poor place, people want cheap things these days and if one thing defines the DS and wii its cheap and childish systems. The PS2 still is having great sucess but I can't really explain that sony buyers are always the smartest so its only a matter of time until those ps2 buyers come over and buy the new best system ever made.

Maybe because they are a less than half the price of a PS3 and not everyone cares about Blu Ray movies. If the PS3 was around $300 it would be selling much better even if it had no good games.

Heck no, You milk that PS2 cash cow till it runs dry. And allow it to heal some PS3's cuts. Then when the PS2 is finally dead, the PS3 will be around $400 bucks or maybe even $350. Either way, they are playing there cards just fine. Plus, you can really buy into the 180 million PS2's sold. I've bought 4 my self due to breaking them, dropping them. Might as well say 70 million sold. Being reliable is also going to hurt sales numbers. Because none of our PS3's are breaking so the original install base doesnt' need to buy another. 360 has some people saying that they've gone through 2 or 3 already. That means the 10 million 360's sold is a joke number and its more like 500,000 less then what they claim.

Thin this way instead. Every PS2 owner is a potential PS3 owner. Problem solved! But I still can't believe people are buying Wii and DS instead of PS3. The world sure is a crazy place!

tell me about my freind bought a Wii and the first thing he did was show his parents what it was and whenhe was playing he accidently smacked his dad in the face with the Wii mote while playing soem game, it was hilarious, true story too!

thats because the controller is a gimick and doesnt work properly, trying to hit the damn thing to get it to work his way and swung to hard and hit his old man.

rolerss3, if you buy the wii over a powerful games machine that prooves 3 things

1 your not a gamer because you dont want the best gaming experience

2 your a kid becasue they only have kiddy titles mainly

3 youve been pulled into this wii fad thinking the motion sensing remote is real motion sensing.

this is the worst idea ever, ps2 is in competition with the wii, u take the ps2 away u just give wii even more customers, which im guessing is nintendos strategy. Well the ps2 is gonna die off anyways so i dont see the point of this thread

You're wrong! People are waiting for a lot of good games to be out for PS3 and by March 08 there will be 380 games between PSN and BR.

The TC does have some good points, but the PS2 is helping Sony's game division counter the losses from the PS3. Sony actually makes a profit when they sell a PS2 console and also off games and accesories. They are losing over $200 on each PS3 and since most PS3 owners only own a couple games, they aren't rcouping the losses.

It's smart for them to keep the PS2 around, at least until they can get the cost of the PS3 down near a break-even point.

[QUOTE="vip_kass"]

By that time it may already be to late as the comp will be in full swing with discounts on there consoles and a game release rate that is much higher then what PS3 has slated.

gundamfan80

This is the same thing that happened with the PS1 and the fact of the matter is they need the PS2 to keep going. By keeping the PS2 going Sony is reinforcing their brand name security. If they just cut PS2 owners off too soon they leave them no choice but to upgrade and frankly that can create enimty between Sony and its fanbase.Sony sells products with a longer life span and presents their products as a better investment than say MS. MS cut the Xbox off after just 4-5 years showing the public that despite the lower cost they may also be buying a product that will be worthless in roughly half the time of the Playstation brand.

Dang. What a good post. Talk about rationality. I was almost thinking that killing off the ps2 might be a good thing, but it's not at all.

Well, that would be following MS steps to ensure a complete pass of generation. Sony is not into those things. Most of the Sony PS2 users appeared after 3 years. If Sony was to discontinue the PS2, first they would fall into a bigger loss. PS2 is not only a good source of income, but its also a good way of getting potetial PS3 users. Sony wont drop the PS2, it would be a blow to them both economically and PR too. The PS2 is as big as a risk as the PS was to the PS2. In 3 years, the PS2 sales will have plumeted, and the PS3 sales will start growing. Its just a simple flow of public. As with games, there is a group that wants X game now, and pays the admission of 50/60 US. Then there is another group that will wait for the Greatest Hits/Platinum version of it to buy it. Those who buy the PS3 in the first year pay the admission ticket to have something now. Any manager know that and they plan with that on mind.

You have to think as they think, they think in potential buyers, because the certain buyer already has a PS3 or are getting it really soon. And to get new buyers they need to show them where the PS3 comes from. Thus the PS2 comes in play as their best choice. Its cheaper to keep a user than to get one, since a new one costs 10 times more than keeping one. Thats an economical fact. PS2 is the best way of keeping clients. 600 is still too much for many and they cant afford to lose a cash cow (cow item would be the economical name) as the PS2 is.

I dont think the PS2 is affecting PS3 atm since they are in totally different segments of the market.
