Got a Ps3 hooked to my 1080i Sony Bravia with a monster cable and some games that say they support 1080 only play in 720 and other games do actually play in 1080; examples.... COD4, Tiger Woods '09/'10, and such play in 720... but Midnight Club: LA plays 1080; any ideas why it is doing this?

The best televisions out there don't all support 1080p. Developers know this and take it into consideration when making the game. You won't get the best experience if you only have 720p and the game can do 1080p. I also think that some games just aren't good enough to look at at that high a resolution so they just take it down a notch.

720p and 1080p are just resolutions more or less. Just like on a PC, if you up the resolution a game is running at, this will decrease the game's frame rate and/or the amount of effects that can be used. So, the majority of games on the PS3 and Xbox 360 are rendered at 720p. This allows the game developer to keep a better frame rate and use more lighting and eye candy effects. The next generation of consoles will probably see a lot more 1080p games as the hardware becomes more powerful.

If you really want it to only view 1080 then go to dispay options and only allow it to view 1080 and that should make it 1080

ok let me re-phrae this... I have a 1080i Sonia Bravia LCD TV connected to my PS3 with a monster HDMI cord. Some games will play in 720p (but can support 1080i as said on back of case) and some games play in 1080i For instance... My COD4 plays 1080i on my xbox 360, but my COD4 plays 720p on my PS3 (but can support 1080i) I don't know why it won't play 1080i, and the only output mode I have selected is 1080i, but it still finds a way to play 720p Any way I can force or a game to play 1080i, I don't like it that the blades of grass are fuzzy

Your TV has a native resolution of 1280x720. There are no 1080i LCD TVs, only CRT (tube) TVs can natively display in that mode. Your LCD will accept a 1080i signal (1920x1080 interlaced), but it still downsamples the image to 1280x720, so giving it 1080i will not improve the picture much. The PS3 and Xbox may tell you that the signal is getting output to the TV at 1080i, but the TV is still running at 720p. You are better off providing a progressive image (720p) instead of a higher resolution, interlaced one (1080i).

Also, for TVs under 50 inches, most people can't see the difference between a 1080p model and a 720p one. So if your TV is under that size, then 720p will be just fine.

Also, about those blades of grass you mention. Computer graphics are inherently jagged. Objects are rendered to a fixed square grid, so any object at an angle can look like steps on a staircase. And the larger the screen, the more apparent the jaggies are, even at 1080p.

So game developers employ anti-aliasing, essentially blurring the edges of objects, or even the entire screen. Or in the case of Killzone 2, they anti-alias in a way to simulate the depth of field found in camera lenses, so that the blur is based on how far ahead or behind the character an object is. So the edges of grass you see were probably intentionally blurred, and will not appear much sharper on a 1080p display.

ok... that confused me alot because I have a 52" TV and when I play COD4 on my 360 and it says "1080" I can notice a major difference in the quality of the picture and clarity than from when I play COD4 on my Ps3 and it say "720"

the xbox 360 is better at upscaling that game to 1080p because of its built in hardware scalar than ps3's software scalar, which runs on its native 720p

As stated above, there is no such thing as a 1080i LCD. It is going to be either 720p or 1080p, and for yours, sounds like 720p. The TV can take 1080i inputs, but before displaying it, your TV is going to convert it back to 720p since that is your TVs native resolution. All TVs "display" only 1 resolution, and this is the TVs native resolution.

The only TVs that are natively 1080i will be a CRT TV, which you really can't even find anymore in HD. This is also why I believe that if you leave both 1080i and 720p checked out your PS3 compatible resolutions, games will tend to go to 720p just because they know most HDTVs now a days are either 720p or 1080p natively.

OK.... Everyone is right, I do NOT have a 1080i TV; it is a 1080p http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Sony+Bravia+1080p&rls=com.microsoft:*:IE-SearchBox&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=ie7&rlz=1I7ADBR_en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=9920770599032180688&ei=okDjSbDqHObqnQfD14WoCQ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&resnum=5&ct=result#ps-sellers ^^^^ Above is my TV, if I have missed anything else. So seeing as this TV is natively 1080, How can I force this Cod4 into 1080?

My advice is don't force the ps3 to upconvert using software. Your TV has it's own hardware converter and will convert it to 1080p before technically displaying it.

Also, since you have a sony TV, it has a game mode, make sure you have game mode turned on for that hdmi port.
