So there was no price cut technically if the lowest priced PS3 you can buy will once again be $600.

Sony is truly screwing up.

One example, when all the GTA4 fans are deciding to buy a console to play GTA4 they will choose the 360 at $299 or $399 and that is without an MS price cut.

I am shocked by this news.

PS3 60gb with the EE ARE being discontinued, but I believe thats what he meant, the current 60gb SKU is dead, the new one will feature no EE and will remain $500. If he really means all 60gb are discontinued I don't think my friends will be happy. I bought mine today so i could get one with emotion engine, but now it looks like my buddies won't be able to find one in time :|

Yeah, good point. Because he started to talk about 88% compatibility and 100% compatibility. That has to do w/the 60GB emotion version.

Seriously, they better just be talking about the new emotion "chipless" version. With sales picking up on these consoles and word of mouth spreading and then all of a sudden saying... "Oh, sorry.. it's 600$.. AGAIN!" I don't see sony doing this, no way... and if they do, bad, bad move. But really, I'm doubtful of the complete phase out of the 60gb in general, and if it is phased out we better see a 500$ 80gig version.. like.. now.

maybe I shouldve added read the full interview first before you get your panties in a twist

Reeves if head of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe

heseems to be mocking SCE America throughout it.

Example:

But you're still asking people to commit GBP 425 to a games console. Isn't there a problem with the perception that that's an awful lot of money to shell out?

It is, but surprisingly, people are paying that amount of money for it.

Was that humbler approach taken because you think Sony has appeared arrogant in the past?

I think they have. Not deliberately, but at E3 last year and maybe the year before, the presentations they did to a European and a Japanese perspective - yes. To an American perspective - no, because the difference in cultures is you have to go, 'Ra-ra, I'm the best.'

We in Europe, and especially the Japanese, don't necessarily accept that. You have to say, 'We're doing our best, but we're not the best.'

I don't understand why they decided on the 80 gb version in the first place O_O I mean, come on, 20 more gigs and a game for that much more. I buy a lot of my games used just because it saves me an assload of money, even getting $10 off a game, If i get 6 games, thats like getting a new retail game free. Unless they do infact come out with this 80gig and drop the price, or if im right about the EE, then this is NOT good buisness sense. I really hope sony is kidding, because if they are really phasing it out, thats just.. MADNESS! *or is it sparta? Yeah, think about that*

Isn't it obvious?

80GB is easier to find, and hence cheaper than the 60GB. Sony would then like to phase out the 60GB and roll out 80GB PS3s, by having a clearance sale (see: price cut) on the existing 60GBs. The 80GB, which in its current form is only available in a bundle gets slapped on a $599 label. When the 60GB is out of the picture, the 80GB bundle is discontinued and a standalone 80GB PS3 is offered.

Single SKU again at $499 again.

Of course, this course of action is only what is logical -- and you know Sony doesn't always follow logic, but this is how it should play out.

It SHOULDN'T play out at all. What they should have done, if they really wanted to upgrade was have a limited edition 120gb with 1 game for the $599, it may be a bit more expensive, but come on 20gb isn't a significant increase.

This is pretty much I'm thinking will happen... or, like you said.. should happen. One thing is for sure, I can't see them going back to only having a 600$ console on the market. I KNOW they have more sense than that.

What? They're not looking to increase or upgrade the PS3. They're looking to minimise costs and, currently, an 80GB PS3 is cheaper (!) to produce than a 60GB.

I was just on the Killzone 2 board commenting on how Sony needs to control its people more on its secrets. I'm pretty sure this isn't something they wanted to get out yet. If so, they would have straight said it.

Of course, its always possible that being from SCEE, he may be misinformed about SCEA happenings.

Well how many stock 60gigs are there. So I''m guessing if this is true they will stop making 60gig but they will still be $499 until they sell out of them. I would imagine that the 80gigs will just sit on shelves again once the 60gigs are all gone which may take till the end of the year. Doesn't make much sense beside being an enginous plot to get more PS3' s out in the market and then to return back to their position. I still think people who were impressed at E3 and want a PS3 are still gonna scoop up a 60gig for $499

Kaz Hirai said in a video interview that Sony was not going to have two SKUs in the US. So starting August, the 80GB will only be available.

Kaz Hirai, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment(the entire entertainment part of the company..not just a certain region) which was Ken Kuturagi's old job, also stated this. He is one of the guys at the top of the totem pole.

I think this is what Sony is banking on...Somebody walking into a store and seeing the 80GB PS3 bundle and saying, "Look, there's an 80GB PS3 with a game. That's 20GB more than the old one, and it includes a game....all for the same price as the old model was. Sounds like a good deal to me."

Never seen a company screw themselves over like Sony is about to do. Doesn't effectus right away sincewe have ps3 already, but it can slow down ps3 sales which can reduce the exclusives we get in the future. My 2 cents atleast.

Wait, wasn't it Sony's plan that the 80GB was to be only a limited edition?
If so, then maybe what he means is that the 60GB with the Emotion Engine, and that they will continue making on 60GB but without the EE, I think this is what Sony will do.

I just bought mine a few days ago from Amazon... I wonder if I should leave it unopened until they declare the 60 GB model dead.

Im sure there are a lot of gamers that would trade a 600 80GB model with no EE for a 500 60GB model with EE... I dont really care that much for backwards compatability...

Sony has said before the EE chip costs around $50,so by removing it they save money.

Then they offer a free game, which is honestly not a deal when most people would rather have the price of a game knocked off the cost.

Add in 20gig of disk space and charge $100 more?...that is NOT a deal.

Personally I have a original 60gig but the 20gig was the better deal in my opinion. For the extra $100 cost all we got was Wi/Fi and 40gig of space, in my case I used wired connections for performance and you can always add cheaper disk space.

But even now the $500 version is the better deal...you get better hardware, save $100, buy your own game and who cares about 20gig of space.

This could very well be the first time in history a console has gotten progressively worse over time. Least early adopters can never say they got ripped off.

sony as a way if u notice to say one thing and do another ie rumble give it time we should know not to blow up anything until the smoke clears

It doesn't make any sense. If true it's a VERY STUPID move on Sony's part. Maybe he is bluffing to increase ps3 sales. Or has nothing better to do then to annoy everyone with yet again another discontinued model of the ps3.

ugghh... even more verrrry poor communication by a sony exec... when are they gonna have a meeting or workshop with these guys to get them all on the same page.... I have a feeling he worded this very poorly...

I'm in the EE SKU theory that they will phase out all the Emotion Engine 60GB units and then restock with EE-less 60GB once those sell out... otherwise this will be another PR disaster.... Sony when are you gonna coordinate your Public Relations announcements... Get your act together.

I think we all need to wait till something is a little more clear and official. We actually may be just making mountains out of molehills. I'm pretty sure they see how well things are selling now compared to a month ago and they probably want to stay at this point, so lets wait a little longer and see what they have to say in more detail.

how bad will the absence of an EE chip affect backward compatability??The_Knight2000

Not much at all. Thanks to the latest firmware updates, the PS3 is about 90% backward compatible.

ugghh... even more verrrry poor communication by a sony exec... when are they gonna have a meeting or workshop with these guys to get them all on the same page....

Get your act together.

or, they could release the 80GB PS3 as a stand-alone purchase for $499 and offer the bundle with MotorStorm and an accessory(controller, headset, etc.) for the $599.
