Sony has said before the EE chip costs around $50,so by removing it they save money.
Then they offer a free game, which is honestly not a deal when most people would rather have the price of a game knocked off the cost.
Add in 20gig of disk space and charge $100 more?...that is NOT a deal.
Personally I have a original 60gig but the 20gig was the better deal in my opinion. For the extra $100 cost all we got was Wi/Fi and 40gig of space, in my case I used wired connections for performance and you can always add cheaper disk space.
But even now the $500 version is the better deal...you get better hardware, save $100, buy your own game and who cares about 20gig of space.
This could very well be the first time in history a console has gotten progressively worse over time. Least early adopters can never say they got ripped off.
Yuck_Too
The best thing wiht the the 60gb over the 20gb was 1) wifi and 2) memory card slots. I use the memory card slots all the time. I think the 60gb was a better deal than 20gb and it remains the better deal over the $599 80gb. Reason is that in a year or so I will just get a 150gb harddrive.......probably will cost less than $100 by then

Instead, a new bundle called the 'value pack' will be put on sale for the same price at which the standalone console was previously available, which will include a 60GB PS3, two controllers, and two games--Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm. This will be available for the usual price in all the regions, although the games would vary from region to region.

isnt the 80gb version a limited bundle edition?lennygundam14
yea im pretty sure it is, i guess there pulling the ps3 off the market lol jk

Personally I think the 20GB version would have sold like hot cakes - even without wifi and memcard slots (I don't need any of those two options personally and would gladly sacrifice them) if they priced it at $449 or less.
As you say; upgrading the hard drive at a later point costs next to nothing these days.
What did Sony's hand say to the cow's face? SLAP!!
http://biz.gamedaily.com/industry/feature/?id=16791
That is just wrong, wrong, wrong on all levels. What is being speculated is that once all the 60GB PS3 are gone from retail shelves, that the 80GB PS3 will drop to $499 just before the holiday shopping season begins on 11/23. Sooooooo, do the people who already bought the $599 80GB PS3 get a $100refund and will gamers who bought the 60GB PS3 for $499 be able to upgrade to the 80GB PS3 for FREE? Sony has seriously screwed this up. They should have just released both the 60GB & 80GB PS3 for $499. With the 60GB PS3 they could have bundled in Motorstorm or Resistance and a Blu-Ray movie. They wouldn't need toinclude anything in the 80GB PS3.
That's a real stupid move unless they are going to price the stand alone 80GB for $499, otherwise, that is one really stupid move.Flame_Blade88
they have to cut the price back to $500 if they want it to sell. if they're smart, they'll realize no one is spending $600 on a system and then cut it back to $500 for the holidays

Yeah they definetly have to. I think they should do it before the holidays though, otherwise say hello to horrible sales again.
Something stinks about this. It doesn't make sense in the first place, if they do it's gotta just be some kinda limited time dealy. But still, where's Gamespot's article? IGN? 1up? None of the big boys of the gaming news world got jack spratt on this? Mighty strange...

If true... BAAAAD move. but i think he means the 60 gb with the Emotion Engine. falconclan
they will drop the price of the 80gig before Xmas, they dont want toannounce it now cause then people wont buy the 60gig model which they are tryign to get rid of there stock of so they just have the 80gig system to sell in the US.
this is common practice for Sony they do the same things for there TVS
They'll discontinue the 60gb with EE and non rumble controllers and start selling 60gb without EE and with rumble controllers. It is hard to believe that a company the size of sony and the experience of sony would do such a stupid move, if they do this they'll lose all consumers.FireFalkon
Kaz Hirai stated that Sony is NOT going to offer 2 SKUs. Therefore, there will not be a 60GB PS3 and 80GB PS3 in the US market.

there's video proof of Kaz Hirai stating it. I don't know why you need a gaming site to report it before you believe it.

Isn't the 80gb a limited edition?[QUOTE="falconclan"][QUOTE="thebatcat"]PS3 60gb with the EE ARE being discontinued, but I believe thats what he meant, the current 60gb SKU is dead, the new one will feature no EE and will remain $500. If he really means all 60gb are discontinued I don't think my friends will be happy. I bought mine today so i could get one with emotion engine, but now it looks like my buddies won't be able to find one in time :|So there was no price cut technically if the lowest priced PS3 you can buy will once again be $600.
Sony is truly screwing up.
One example, when all the GTA4 fans are deciding to buy a console to play GTA4 they will choose the 360 at $299 or $399 and that is without an MS price cut.
I am shocked by this news.
eclipsed4utoo
Kaz Hirai said in a video interview that Sony was not going to have two SKUs in the US. So starting August, the 80GB will only be available.
So this news have been confirmed by 2 Sony Execs in Dave Reeves and Kaz Hirai. I guess Dave Reeves was right when he said all the $499 60GB PS3 will be gone by the end of July. Boy what a mess.
This was suppose to be one of the most prolific days for the ps3 since their lunch, but now it will be one of the worst.... If Sony doesn't say something before today COB ( close of business), they can consider them self dead. They are losing customer at a huge speed due to this news. I just can believe how things just turn out today... I'm in shock.
It doesn't make any sense! They should have learned with the launch that no one will spend 600$! I can't see how sony can make such a move, what will they win? even lower sales? even lower consumer interest? The company as a whole would lose their credibility after announcing a price drop and a week later saying they'll discontinue the cheaper console. This was suppose to be one of the most prolific days for the ps3 since their lunch, but now it will be one of the worst.... Correct. Europe is not getting the 80GB PS3 and Dave Reeves has already confirmed this. The European market is getting a bundled 60GB PS3 now for the same price they've always been paying. The diffenece is it will include 2 controlls and both Motorstorm & Resistance. Not a bad deal. I hope Sony gives us that same deal in about a year from now with the 80GB PS3. I'd buy that for $499.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26704
Sony: "The next generation of gaming starts when we say it does...and the PS3 will be future proof."
Well I guess it's not started yet and perhaps they should redefine what future proof means.
I've lost count of how many different PS3 hardware combinations there are world wide, but I do know the 20g, and now the 60g, didn't exactly withstand the test of time...just wait for it...

did people really think sony was that stupid
wait i really dont understand so they are guna stop making the 60GB and make a new 80GB so that means that all of us who spent 600$ on the 60GB wasted our money cuz they are making a superior system??
if thats true thats **** **** unless you can exchange your old 60 for a (better??) 80
I thought this was a bad move originally but upon reading some thoughts this could actually be good. First if they are discontinuing the 60gb, they have to move the rest of the units, what better way then a price cut. They announced that the 80gb model would come out bundled with a game selling for th $599. However, many people believe the 80gb is cheaper or the same price to manufacture as the 60gb (as it has no EE chip and the bigger hdd isn't much more expensive). Once the limited edition bundle sells out sony should sell the 80 gb for $499.
Why not just come out an say this, well if that was the case there would be no way they could move the 60gb, because everyone would just wait for the 80 gb to come out. Marketing is a tricky thing and I know no word from SCEA has been said regarding the discontinuation of the 60gb model or of any reason to believe the 80 gb would be 499, but I have faith in you sony...don't let me down.
Also read some news stories in which Capcom CFO says he expects another price drop during the holiday season: Article

It is not any better, just a larger hard drive and no EE chip (which means backwards compatablility for the 80gb won't be as good initailly as teh 60GB, but will eventually catch up)...The only reason they are releasing an 80gb is cuz they can with very little extra cost and believe that people will be downloading more and more with games like warhawk being offered as a downloadable game (and perhaps a movie service in the future??) Honestly 60gb is probably enough for most people unless you are going to be downloading everything available.
The other reason they are discontinuing it is because two SKUs don't do well you will always have one selling a lot better than the other, and hopefully the 80gb (unbundled) will cost 499 which would mean that having the 60 would be even less revelavent to consumers, if that happens....and hopefully another christmas price drop would make it 399, just to move even more consoles, but wait for SCEA to actually say something on the matter

it's a way to make fast profit, in this case in this month.
"Look!!! the 60gb ps3 is now at 499.99! and as soon it is sold out, the only model in the market from then on will be the 80gb at 599.99, we can't miss this chance to get a ps3!"
now, How many 60gb ps3 sony produced so far for north america?
Now imagine as soon as the 60gb version is sold out in north america, the profit sony made with this little game they made.
And then, the casual ps3 life continues with the usual 599.99 price tag.

JEEZ..wrote that first part before I read you article, which doesn't come straight out and deny the discontinuation of the 60GB just says they have plenty of stock of it...more over hearing and seeing Kaz Hirai saying they will discontinue it (as the president of Sony Computer Entertainment) still worries me a bit.
But thanks for sharing that, it makes me feel a lot better that sony hasn't completely lost their minds.
Man am I glad that I bought mine this week. $499 with WiFi and REAL backwards compatibility... yay!
But I agree with the rest, Sony BETTER have a $499 option once the EE 60gb units are gone, simply so more people will get the PS3 and developers will be able to sell to a larger base.
Once again Sony manages to shoot themselfs in the foot again...for godsakes the $600 price point has already been rejected by consumers. WTF is Sony's problem..eveything starts to kick into high gear with PS3's starting to sell much better than they do something dumb again because they're ignoring what consumers are saying with their wallets! This is "typical Sony." This definately shows why so many developers are having issues with Sony, maybe this is why Microsoft didn't drop their price because they possibly had inside knowledge that infact as they stated several times that "it isn't a price cut."
My god Sony really has screwed up a good thing with the PS3 finally getting good press, good sellsand much needed attention with the temporary price reduction. Weather you're getting more value or not people DONT LIKE THE $600 price point PERIOD, weather you throw Pamela Anderson Lee in the box with it or not...jeeze wake up Sony!
skip to 1:40 in to here Kaz say it - http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235KzerXtreme
agreed. SCEA has denied the comments by David Reeves, and the PR guy never denied the claim that production of the 60GB PS3 has stopped. and SCEA didn't denied the comments by Haz Hirai(in the video).
so what does that tell you? They have ample supply? well of course they do. the PS3 hasn't been selling that well.
