Hola,

I have been kicking around getting a PS3 lately but with all of the different versions I had some questions about how its sold.

I am primarly a PC gamer, I have an XBox 360 for HD DVD movies and some games. I figured there are enough blu-ray exclusives andPS3 gamesto bring me into the Playstation camp. I have watched closely and so far the games released in both platforms seem to be comparable, so I was waiting for the exclusive and price drop to make the plunge.

From my research it seems like the following is true:

20GB (discountinued)

40GB No backward compatibility for PS2, larger HDD ($399)

60GB Has backward compatibility, larger HDD (???)

80GB Backward compatibility, larger HDD, 4 USB ports, Card Readers ($499)

I really dont plan on buying any PS2 games, dont see myself going backwards. So right now I am leaning towards the 40GB model, I will primarly be using the console for watching blu-ray and maybe some games. I tend to rent console games not buy them.

I would be interested in the 60GB, but I dont really see the 60GB for sale whats the deal?

I know the history with the 360 and its failure rate, how is the PS3 fairing? I will probably get a protection plan to save the headache.

Do any of the systems come with HDMI Cable in the box? Anyone know of a good AV switch, I think my TV is already out of available ports (only 2).

Thanks in Advance.

The 60GB was also discontinued. The 40 GB seems to be the best option for you. If the HDD space worries you, you can always upgrade.

Reliability is not an issue. The PS3 is a tank.

It doesn't come with HD cables, you'll have to buy the one that better suits you.

Their lucky than. You cant find them here. As im sure 08 wont be any better. Sony needs to be more ready for these holidays. Epically the hit of 08. And thats gonna be one big hit next year. With the 60 just out about out of gas, and the PS3 starting to roll, and Everyone will already own a Wii.

I think the 60gb version is being ran down now so it could be hard to find. You might end up having to get a 40gb or wait and see if Sony bring the 80gb over from the USA. As i understand it though it's easy enough to upgrade your HD yourself. The question is how much of an issue the BC is for you.

On the reliability side, mine went bad after 5 weeks with the overheating error but they shipped a replacement to me within 3 working days which was good. The bad news was they refused to replace new for new so I have ended up with a reconditioned console 5 weeks after getting a brand new one which I'm not impressed over.

Not sure where you are, but in Dallas, Texas I was tripping over Sony PS3's yesterday when I was at Frys. I really don't see supply being an issue here. I called Gamestop, 1 mile from my house they have both 40 and 80gig.

I appreciate the comments guys, looks like the 40 is the way for me, I really could care less about Backwards Compatibility.

I am too much of a graphics whore, to buy last gen stuff so don't see it being an issue. I know the PS2 has a huge library but not appealing to me.

Bummer they don't throw in an HDMI cable, but good to know ahead of time. Are people buying the store replacement or just going with the factory warranty?

I am going to start calling around to see what bundles are out there.

What Blu-ray titles do you guys reccommend that would have the best image quality?

I know I want Superbad (because its an awesome movie), but I am looking for the best looking Blu-ray movies to show off the system with.

I want X-Men 3, Crank, Pirates... Outside of that looking for suggestions.

With no PS2 issues, Your fine with any version than. You can still play 7 controllers if charged. So thats not really a big deal either. Id get the store and factory warranty, but thats just me. And on movies lol, I have no clue. I liked Pirates and any blockbuster. But im not a big movie goer

I wouldn't worry about a store replacement plan - PS3 has an extremly low failure rate and you get a 1 year warrenty from SONY.

I reccomend you try out Resistance: Fall of Man, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted: Drake's Forune and Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction. These games are all excellent, boast excellent graphics and good gameplay. Besides they all have demo's on the PSN which means you decide weather you want to buy / rent the game or not ;-)

Thats odd for me, someone else would have ot answer that. Because my TV HDMI is huge, on the HD cable box end. But its not the same fit as the PS3 one. Im not sure which one is standard? As I had that cable gave to me via the Cable company. I use just HD components as for now. And they can do 1080P, but the cables go from Digital to analog to digital. Wear HDMI is strait digital.

Im out, gonna try and go to work kinda sick ugh :( And we got snow last night :P

300 -> excellent on Blu-ray
Black Hawk Down - good movie, good PQ
The Departed - another excellent movie and good PQ
POTC: Dead Man's Chest - EXCELLENT PQ, infact it won home magizine's "best picture quality" award (for ALL HD movie's irrespective of format)

Its a standard HDMI 1.3 port -> all HDMI cables will work with it, its only Composite/Component that are unique for PS3.

Greetings tkemory,

Juding by your post I'd recommend 40GB PS3 as well. You will have all that you need for movies or games. As mentioed previously you will need a HDMI cable for HDTV, the standard AV cables are included.

For the Blu-ray movies here is a list: http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/reviews.php?show=newreviews

There are quite a few, I personally love "Kingdom of Heaven".

Happy shopping ^_^

Hope you enjoy the jump to the PS3, it's just a great machine with very low failure rates. I personally didn't get a replacement plan for my PS3 as I've never had a gaming console go out on me, especially the Playstations. For the HDMI cable, if you don't have one already, get one off of Amazon. Should run you no more then $10, probably less.

As far as the Blu-Rays go, I haven't bought many of them yet and it sounds like what I do have others have already recommended to you. Check out avsforums.com for more information on the Blu-Rays and see what is available that you would like. And I believe there is still the deal with the PS3 when you buy one that you get 5 free blu-ray movies. You can get the coupon here at http://bluraysavings.com

My local Frys electronics is packed with them, Circuit City about has a half dozen of them, and I even saw some Sears. They're not to hard to find.

Sound question,

What type of sound output does the PS3 offer outside of HDMI? I am considering getting another AV Receiver and running all of my HDMI through it, What other options does the PS3 offer just in case? Does it have an optical or only left/right outputs?

the 60gb and 20gb are discontinued.... if you want PS2 games as well, get an 80gb, you'll also get a very good racing game called Motorstorm. If youre not interested in any PS2 games get a 40gb, at $399 its a very good deal when you get that plus blu ray player plus builtin wife... oh and online play is free ;).

failure rate, like the Wii, has a very good reliability rate. i think its under 1% failure rate, which is VERY good.

no systems come with an hdmi cable but you can get them at a good price at monoprice.com... 6ft gold plated hdmi cable usually goes for about $15-20... DO NOT buy a cable at best buy or other retailer, i used to work at circuit city and the markup is rediculous on cables at retail. with my discount i use to pay about 10% of the original price that most people had to pay if thats any indication of the markup.

Games i recommend: Warhawk (great 3rd person online shooter), Heavenly Sword (great action game like god of war with probably the best cinematics out there), Motorstorm (very fun arcade offroad racer with fun online races), Resistances (cool alternate history FPS with great online play), Uncharted (a fun adventure game - sorta cross between tomb raider and gears of war's cover system)

get a PS3, it makes more sense especially with the 40gb cause not only do you get a high quality player but its cheaper than most standalones (theyre in the $4-500 range correct?). Also, there are gonna be games on the system your gonna wanna buy so why not go PS3? You can download trailers, store your mp3s, photos, play game demos etc.... Standalone player can do none of that.

If you don't care about the Backwards compatibility, then just go for whichever is the cheapest, as a PS3 they all function the same. Besides, if your hard drive is too small, install another one. Personally, I haven't even used 7 of my 20 gigs in my 360 yet, let alone maybe 5 on my PS3's 60 gig hard drive.

Oh, and PS3s aren't hard to find in most places, aside from the 20 gig models mind you.

Right now my two biggest issues with the PS3

1. No upconversion for S DVD.

2. No IR Remote support.

I just bought a new Harmony 550 remote which I like quite a bit. Spent around 100$ so want to be able to use it, my understanding is it wont work with the PS3 without some jury rigging.

But I am still leaning towards the PS3, can use my 360 for SDVD, and just have to use the controller for the PS3.

Well I now officially belong to the PS3 club and now have the best of both worlds. I picked up the 40G PS3 last night from Frys, along with Kingdom of Heaven and Pirates 1. I meant to get Pirates 3 but grabbed wrong box hehe, had my 3 year old son in tow and he was being a handful so was hard to concentrate.

So far I really like the system, somethings I am not crazy about but will get used to.

I am planning on getting Uncharted today, and picking up some game rentals as well. Going to probably get 3 or 4 more blu-ray movies today, not including the5 free ones.

Thanks for all the advice, seems like I have joined a pretty good group of gamers, look forward to meeting some of you online.

You can use HDMI or Optical or the red / white (i think) wires.

red / white -> limited audio quality
Optical cable - 5.1
HDMI - 7.1

Well I run my sound through my stereo receiver, no TV can keep up with a good sound system IMO. Right now I am running my PS3 optical through the stereo but had to take my FiOS off to do so, which wont last long.

I think I am going to find a reciever that has HDMI passthrough and go that route, will cut down on my wires also which will be great. Thanks for the info ChaosGod.
