a casual gaming family - done the usual gamecube, ps2, Wii routine. Thinking of either the Xbox or PS3. I know its just about impossible to find info comparing the two without the start of flame wars, but the biggest thing that troubles me are all the posts over the years about the RROD with the Xbox. I am not seeing similar warning posts for the PS3. Will this, what appears to be a fatal flaw with the Xbox ,be resolved? I've read posts about checking boxes for the new circuit board, notes that Amazon is selling the old version even though the item description says is the new one. If I am to spend $300-400 for a gaming platform, I need to see some info that I am not gonna get screwed by the Xbox. Would really appreciate some non flame advice. What kind of problems does the PS3 have, if any? Thx !

A thing called the 'YLOD' - Yellow Light of Death. It affects the tiniest, tiniest portion of consoles though... no where near the same amount of broken Xbox's.

Oh, sorry for double post. I think Microsoft confirmed that there was no point in fixing the RROD because 'it affected such a small portion of the overall population'.

And it only effects the old 60 GB's which aren't even sold in stores anymore.

yeah but its not as common as the RROD issue. Let me stress that its not as common! But there are problems that are similar. I had a 40gb PS3 and it crapped out after 13 months. I'm pretty sure the CPU just over heated and over time it degraded some of the contact points. I did not get the YLOD, it just froze one day, shut off and never produced audio or video again. I could still turn it on and off, but nothing else worked.

there is the yellow light of death as previously mentioned. im not sure if it affects certain systems (i've heard a tale from 1 of every system i think) i will say that the failure rate for ps3's is considerably lower than xbox 360's.

Well the PS3 failure rate is something like 0.5% while the 360's is somewhere near 30%.

Get a PS3, you will be happy you did. Online is free too, although I'm not sure how much that matters to you.

Definitely no. Nothing in regards of RROD.

You're safe as it gets when it comes to technology life cycles.

I wouldn't call the RROD uncommon. MS has already stated it's cost them a billion $.

The PS3 DOES have the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD) but its not nearly as frequent as the RROD (39% for RROD, 7% YLOD)

And the Wii really has no overheat problems, but some people who picked it up on day one (Nov 16th 2006) are having failing disc drives, but its only a $70 repair.
