...and hardly any hardware failure. Well I am looking for confirmation to this statement from you PS3 owners.

With the recent news of the other next-gen console being recalled in Australia, it's clear that PS3 is the console to own. Don't you agree? They boasted about being the leader in sales (units sold), and key game exclusives in their E3 presentation, yet there was no graph pointing out their hardware failures. What's strange is that even with all of the reports of hardware failures that surfaced over some time now, yet people still buy their consoles. I just don't understand why.

So I either put up $500 dollars to get the other console, with good games, which are mostly FPS, full knowledge of potential hardware failure (and 3 year warranty), service fee for online (which isn't a big deal considering that they may have rules and regulations in place), or go for the $600 dollar PS3 (80GB allegedly priced for August), with a free online service, with great games coming along the way, and not worry so much about hardware failure. I'll stick with getting the PS3 hands down. What are your thoughts on this issue?

I think if you're only going to buy one console you're missing out on a lot and can't really call yourself a gamer.

I consider myself a gamer.. I don't have to have all three consoles to be a gamer. I can get all three if I choose but I am sorry I don't feel like throwing about $500 dollars away like everyone else. One console has hardware failures, and the other, although I have nothing against the unique controller, have too much child-like games for my liking.

Well first, the 600 dollar ps3 is only the bundle and most people are speculating that the 80gb stand alone will be 499, so that might be nice...I would probably say your making a good choice with te ps3!

PS3 -> Reliable hardware and really bright future for games and the online network.

360 -> Unreliable hardware and was the best system to own up until this fall.

Wii -> Horrible overpriced outdated hardware. If the Wii was $150, games were $20-$40, and VC was $2,3,5 it would be a really really great system. As is Nintendo is just price gouging their gimmick.

Long term and now at $500 a much better value than 360 by any means PS3 is the best console to own period. All are good but PS3 is the only one I think most everyone is going to want eventually, just like PS2 was.

And definitely just get the 60GB at $500. The HDD space is not a big difference and if you run out of room you can buy a 160GB replacement HDD for like $100.... any laptop HDD can just be put in PS3 and it works. The main point of the 80GB is as a bundle and to lower costs by using emulation and 65nm Cell chips.

I have had my 360 since launch without a single problem, I know quite a few people who have had it just as long. Microsoft is alsor reportedly releasing a newer 360 sometime in the future with hardware changes to cure the cooling deficiencies on the CPU. They just instituted the 3yr extended warranty plan so I don't see what your worry would be. I've seen complaint after complaint about the PSN ranging from the lack of demo's, slow browser & countless issues with connecting to the network. That didn't hinder my plans to purchase it & I have had no issues with getting connected to the PSN, the lack of games on PS3 did hinder my purchasing it sooner but they dropped the 60gb version price by $100 & I am satisfied with my purchase because I now have a few other games in my arsenal that the other 2 systems do not have but if you want to compare next-gen in terms of failures then you cannot choose PS3 ither because the PSN is not flawless & is riddled with problems. They all have issues but they are all great in different aspects & if limiting yourself to one system is what you have to do that is fine but don't try to justify your reasons by pointing out failures of other systems when they all have taken the steps to correct the issues.

Once again this belongs in system wars.

A fanboy, lol....That's funny...

As I said in my previous post, I prefer not to throw money away just so I can enjoy a few good games and a good online experience. I was considering getting both consoles before the recent news so how does that make me a fanboy? And if there are less reports of "hardware failures", I may pick one up. I don't think that makes me a fanboy. I never said one system is perfect as there is nothing in this world perfect. You are one of the very few that actually bought a system that wasn't defective. Until this issue is fixed, that isn't a chance I want to take.

I think this belongs in system wars where fanboys can discuss on the matter. Never could understand fan boys, you limit yourself to one set of games. PorkNBeans

I have to disagree with that statement. I have been a gamer since the NES. And I have only owned one console each generation. I could easily afford all of them, but I view it as a waste of money--as most games are multiplats. I always buy the system that has the exclusives that I want. And this gen as the previous two--it is with playstation. To me, Sony has the best first party--bar none. They have over a dozen studios--in which nearly all of them makes AAA/AAAA material.

MS first party has Halo, PGR, and Forza--that is about it. And out of those--all I would want to play is Halo. Then their third party exclusive is Gears. I think it would be stupid to pay $400 for two games.

The Wii--well being that it is being marketed for casuals and non-gamers, that pretty much makes up my mind right there. Sure they have a great first party too, but many are oriented to a different market, like Pokemon, Nintendogs, etc. I do love Zelda, Mario Galaxy looks interesting, and Mario Kart will most likely be a lot of fun. But again--I can't see spending $250 just to play 2 or 3 games.

My point is, that Sony has at least 20 exclusive games that I want to play, not to mention all of the bonus hardware like blu-ray. So for me, one system is plenty and will keep me more than busy. And because of this I consider myself as a true gamer. I just don't see a point of spending $650 on the other two systems for a handful of games. To me that would not make me a "true gamer", it would make me an irresponsible and stupid spender.

Now if all systems have many games you want to play--more power to you. Just don't think that people that have one system are not true gamers.

PS3 -> Reliable hardware and unreliable online network, limited library and bright future for games but will soon be limiting PS1 & PS2 playback by removing the EE chip in the 80 GB version. They need to start pushing out more titles & fast.

360 -> Unreliable hardware and has the best library of games to own till at the very least Q3 2008 but the future for the games here are equally as bright as Sony's if not brighter given the head start of it's launch. Mistake, releasing the Elite 360 then announcing they are releasing a 360 with hardware changes to turn the unreliable hardware into reliable hardware. If they can actually make the hardware more reliable they would still lose money but at the rate they are pushing out games the library could be immense and make people soon forget the past issues.

Wii -> Decent hardware. If the Wii wasn't so much damn fun & intuitive it would be $150. They need to start pushing out more games and fast, they still need to be more friendly to 3rd party software companies.

And definitely just get the 60GB at $500. The HDD space is not a big difference and if you run out of room you can buy a 160GB replacement HDD for like $100.... any laptop HDD can just be put in PS3 and it works. So your saying that if you have 1 console than your not a gamer. Look how ignorant you sound. You can have 1 console and be called a gamer. I'm not going to spend money on 2 games every month just by having to consoles. I'm sticking with my PS3 and really I am a gamer thank you very much. And how am I missing out explain that to me by just having a PS3. Im not missing out on anything for your information because there are a lot of good games to come. Thank you.

Wow! That's nice. It seems obvious that someone has a silver spoon. Why is it that the confused and mislead are always the loudest. Hey, Stalin, while you're at it why don't you tell the guy which job he can and can't have.

As far the original poster's comment, I personally agree with you, but it is also hard to dissuade people from buying the other console if the most of the games are similar and it is a little cheaper. The old adage "You get what you paid for" never rang more true. It is hard to out-argue cheaper even if the machine is shoddily built and needlessly self-limiting. If you decide to go the PS3 route, perhaps I'll see you online sometime. My PSN id is Mace.

I have both a PS3 and 360. Right now, for me, the 360 is the console to own. I've played a ton of great games on it and there are a lot more coming this year. The PS3 will have it's day in the sun, but probably not until 2008.

I have had my 360 die on my twice as well. They had quick turn around getting them fixed. Personally, I couldn't imagine not having both consoles.

No, you can't call yourself a gamer if you only buy one console. Look at Ninja Gaiden, for example. I know many people who didn't even realize what they were missing out on Xbox until playing the PS3 version 3 years later, and they're loving it. These are the same people you see on forums like these talking about how the 360 sucks or how PS3 sucks. They just have no idea. If they were quiet about it, okay, they're modest gamers, but when someone owns one console and tries to justify that purchase by blindly criticizing the others, that person can't call himself a gamer. He's just a marketing tool for corporations like Sony and MS. I'm saying to be a gamer you have to enjoy games for what they are, not for what console they're on.

I have played the 360, and I did so before my decision to purchase a PS3. I would get a X360, but there is no backward compatabiltiy, and MS seems to only stick to one type of game, shooters.

I have owned a Commodore 64, a Vic 20, Atari 2600, Calecovision (sp)?, NES, Sega Master System, SNES, Turbographix, Genesis, N64, PS1, 3DO, PS2, and now a PS3. I also have played a few computer games, but PC is not my gaming platform of choice. I think I can call myself a gamer if I want to.

If, and it's a big if, I get a second console, it would definitely be the Wii, and that would be for my two year old son. I would be more into MS if I liked shooters, but I want variety, not 100 versions of the same game.

If you like MS, I don't have a problem with that, but you need to get off your high horse. Just because you own multiple platforms doesn't put you in some "elite" status amongst video GAMERS.

Just switched from 360 to PS3... and personally I'm waaayyy happier with the PS3. Two of my 360's crapped out, and with the lowered price and other extras I couldn't resist. I also own the Wii (I'll always bea Nintendo fangirl) which I love, but I don't consider it in the same league with the other two, it's kind of it's own thing. I really think PS3 is the way to go vs. the 360: more reliable, better looking, and has far more potential for future gaming.

Go buy the 60GB PS3. Chances are if you haven't bought any next gen system you either not a hardcore gamer or you don't that much money to pay for video games, so don't pay attention to the people that are telling you to buy more than one next gen system. Not everyone can afford two or three next gen systems. Getting a PS3 will set you back a lot when you get a games, controller, TV, and the system, but it's totally worth it. If you had to get one next gen system you should get the PS3 because it's the best hardware and Sony is clearly bringing the most 1st party exclusives this year with 15 SCE games.

Yeah I like the PS3 and I think you will too. Great future (as in a couple months). Oh yeah about the whole "not a gamer if you dont have a lot of consoles" topic, that is false because I only have a PS3 and consider myself somewhat a gamer. I think as long as you have something with a controller, youre a gamer or some sort. If you have a lot of consoles, you are a bit more of a hardcore gamer. Theres my 2 cents.

[QUOTE="synce"]I think if you're only going to buy one console you're missing out on a lot and can't really call yourself a gamer.vegetattack15

Great post, couln't agree more.

Describes what I think also. Although Im only in early high school years and cant afford all platforms if I wanted to anyways. One is enough for me.

agreed. atleast get the PS3 and 360.

Since when do we need to fulfil consoles ownership conditions to be a gamer? Anybody who plays videogames as a hobby is a gamer, even if playing them on a single console!

amen to that!

I'm saying to be a gamer you have to enjoy games for what they are, not for what console they're on.synce

As long as you play games. your a gamer. Period. And another thing. Why waste your money on more than one console if most of the games are multi platformers? It's just a matter of what a certain person prefers. Some people choose only the PS3 because that's where the games they like will come out. And if your really gonna think about and if you have the money, and only if you have the money, why get a PS3 and a 360 when can buy aPC instead of 360? The best exclusive for me that they have now is probably Gears and it's going to the PC and it's all most certain that Halo 3 will to.So why buy a 360 when you can get360 games, a whole lot ofRTS games, RPG's, and a lot of MMOs with a PC?And the in this forum aren't being fan boys. Their just stating facts. You really can deny that the 360 breaks down. And for consumers thats a big thing. Why buy something that's going to break regardless of the warranty?

As for hardware reliability, PS3 is the best in mi opinion. Wii is reliable too but with that hardware its kinda really hard to get any problems (no bashing, but try and deny it) and the 360...well we all know how the story goes. I wont get a Wii because of lack of appealing games to me, and the Xbox 360, the only thing that made me want one was Gears of War and its coming to PC so the chances of me getting the 360 have gone from a maybe to close-to-none.

PS3 -> Reliable hardware and free online network, with major improvements to the network a few months away. About as big a library as any system has 7-8 months after release and bright future for games. Will soon be changing the way PS1 & PS2 playback is done by removing the EE chip in the 80 GB version, and using software emulation instead; looking at the PAL version, which already uses emulation for backwards compatibility, expect about a 95% compatibility rate, making the library of playable titles on the PS3 bigger than any other system. Also, has a blu-ray player built in, giving you a leg up in making the jump from dvd to hd movies, especially considering blu-ray is pretty clearly winning the format wars.

360 -> Unreliable hardware and has a small handfull of good exclusives, most of which aren't really exclusive if you own a PC anyway. Mistake, releasing the Elite 360 then announcing they are releasing a 360 with hardware changes to turn the unreliable hardware into reliable hardware. If they can actually make the hardware more reliable they would still lose money but at the rate they are pushing out games the library could be immense, but still only have a few decent exclusives, which arent exclusive anyway. At least when they went from xbox to 360 they got smart and replaced their giant brick controller with a near-copy of the PS controller.

Wii -> Decent hardware, or would have been if it had come out during the last gen of consoles. The controllers nifty, but does anyone who owns one ever play anything but wii-sports?. They should have just burned wii sports in the firmware, not had a disc drive, and sold the thing for $39.99.

PorkNBeans

There I fixed your fix for you.

But no seriously, the PS3 is a great system. The 360 is a good system too. If I could afford them both right now, I would get a 360. I wouldb't have many games for it though, I don't think. Multi-plats, I would likely get for the PS3. And MS exclusives I would probably get for the PC. That leaves what, 2 games? No games? I don't know. The wii, seems like its just a gimmick. Everyone I know that got one and was raving about it a few months ago has all but stopped playing it, unless someone who has never played one comes over. So, to the OP, yeah, I would say get a PS3.

And yes, I am a gamer. I have 7 still working game consoles in my home, spanning the last 20 years of gaming. That's not including hand-helds, or my PC. My time not working is spent either a)playing games; b)spending time with my wife--quite likely by playing games together; or c)going to school--majoring in game/simulation programming. I don't need a video game system with the word 'elite' in the name to make me a gamer.

well I feel you made a good choice if you're only going to get one console. The Ps3 blends technological advancements, great games, and hardware reliability all in one. Personally, I have seen the competition and I personally, other than maybe ssb, see no reason to really get any of the other consoles, at least at this point in time though the future titles don't look so appealing to me.

I've always been a "One Gen, One Console" gamer. NES -> SNES -> N64 -> PS2 -> PS3. I felt like I made a huge mistake by going with the N64 instead of PS1. Thanks to backwards compatibility, I don't have to miss a thing. Old PS1 games still play on the PS2 and now PS3. :D

Oh, and the PC. I upgrade my PC or get a new one when it lags behind and can't play the latest games not available on console. Butthis gets very expensive very fast.

For this gen, I think the X360 is just a glorified PC. Most of the "exclusive" X360 games will be released on the PCeventually (Games for Windows, whatever). The true "exclusive" games exist on the PS3 and Wii.

Between my PC and PS3, I don't feel I'm missing any game that I would have wanted to play. My bases are covered.

I really cant understand some guyz that telling go buy all 3!!!

Are you working and bought all 3 consoles and best games for each or your parents got nice-well payment jobs and they bought you all 3??

Some countries or some ppl working, payments arent that good and they dont have 1000$/euros to spend plus 500 more for best games (maybe more).Like me btw. Im gonna buy PS3 and ill stack with it,dont have extra money to spend.I got a house rent to pay and many many more bills that ill pay by my own when the average monthly payment in my country is 600euros!! (Ps3 costs 565euros here).

Btw,here we wont have a price drop yet or a new 80gb HDD PS3. Ill wait for christmas and ill buy one for sure. I like the exclusives of PS3 till now and ill buy them for sure (titles like Heavenly-Ratchet-MGS4 and more)

That makes me a fanboy? Maybe yes. Wii is too childish for me but i have to admit that has some funny games to play with your family or some friends and have great time. But that it nothing more except 1 -2 titles to go hardcore adult gaming ( like MGS4-RE5-DMC4-HEAVENLY-JERICHO-GT5-WIPEOUT-TEKKEN6-FF13 and many more that i like).

Xbox360 is a nice machine with good titles no doubt but i was never (still im not) appeal by microsoft to buy one.

I have never played Halo before, ive seen it once only, and it never make me want to. The only games that attracts me for 360 are lost odyssey and Fable 2. But i wont buy it for just 2 titles cause PS3 got more games that i love.

So i go for PS3 in christmas. See you online bye bye
