I think that the PS3 can finally be sold as a gaming machine and essentially as a gaming machine, now that the HD-DVD is dead. One major problem with the ps3 is that it doesn't know what it is for its own good. A gaming machine, a blu-ray player?? Sony can now concentrate fully on games... What do you think?

Toshiba President and Chief Executive Atsutoshi Nishida stated "We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called next generation format war and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop. It was a tough decision. But it would have a big impact on our management if we continued HD DVD."

Year of the PS3??

Its crazy to just try to sell the PS3 as a gaming machine and only a gaming machine. Its *The Best* BluRay player on the market right now. Use that as a key selling point. Anything to get more PS3's in more homes. Whatever the case, its going to be fun watching the PS3 sales go through the roof.

Until MGS4 or FFXIII is here, the PS3 still "cannot" be sold as a sole gaming console.

Sure you have Uncharted, R&CF, DMC4 around, but those are not killer apps.

It's OK to have bunch of PS3s sold. But what about the games?? Ain't PS3 a gaming machine equipped with a Blu-Ray drive? I don't think it's the opposite. As Blu-Ray will be the only HD Optical format Sony can now sell Blu-Ray players and PS3 as a gaming machine equipped with a BD drive. Games are essential to make money out of PS3. I think Blu-Ray needed help from the PS3 to win the format war, but not to push the format itself.

If anything I think the opposite is true. Without the fear of putting your money in the losing format now more people can make up their mind and purchase a PS3, not only for games but also for HD movies.

Exactly!! I now 2 people that had 360s which broke, so they bought PS3s and Blu Ray was deciding factor, and I know another person that plays PC games that will get a PS3 just because it's a BD player.

This is a colossal win for Sony.

For the stage that the PS3 is at right now, I think we are fine as far as games go. There are plenty of first rate games out and in stores now and there are a ton lined up in the chute for this year. All this on a system that has been said by nearly every developer as a system that is extreamiy hard to write for (or program). The AAA games are comming very soon and the future is looking very bright.

However, key focus for now should be selling systems (I feel). Its been a while that we have been sitting in the back row as far as system sales. I would like to see the sales jump, PS3 to move to the #1 slot, then all the amazing games come pouring in.

What the PS3 lacked is something that seperated itself from the other machines out there. It can play great looking games but so can the 360. You can shake the controler around when you play but the Wii does that as well. We need the next generation of home entertainment. PS3 just did that. Now market that!

Honestly people need to stop looking at the PS3 as just a gaming system. I might be crazy but a machine that can do multiple things is the way technology is going. Look at cell phones.

It could be said that the iPhone needs to just be sold as a phone a strip away all the other features. Since the PS2 the PS3 has been designed as a media hub that handles games, movies, music, internet, chatting, computing+++.

Personally I think people just need to realize times have changed and to try and hold a product in their mind as something that the company wants to expand past is dillusional.

Just my 2 cents

Im with you man, I work in videogames at best buy, and now I have a definate answer when people ask to either buy an HD-DVD player or Blu-ray, and then I can continue to convince them to buy a PS3, because it is by far the better value, AND i wanna reach budget.

PS3 is always known as a entertainment Hub. Is not just for gaming, you can watch movie, listen to music, go online well, like a iphone. Is not for one thing... Although, mainly for gaming of course. :P

As a PC Gamer, i got my PS3 for these reasons:

1. Blu-Ray is too cool

2. I was tired of missing out on great PS2 games and my 60GB was backwards compatible. XBox games go to PC eventually anyways, PS games do not.

3. Eventually, there will be a full library or great PS3 games, and i'll be ready. This has already started happening and will get better over time.

In my opinion, the PS3 was the best "gaming" machine from the day it was released.

I never understood all the talk about the "PS3 having no games" or "not being a gaming machine". Heres why:

1) The PS2 had played DVDs, so its just common sense that Sony would include their version of what would become the new standard for watching flicks. Had HD-DVD won the format war, 360 fanboys wouldn't shut up about it, so why should we feel bad about having the best bluray player included with our purchase?

2) The PS3 from day one had great games, and I don't understand the people who couldn't find something to play. Firstly, most of the better 360 games came out for PS3 anyways (Oblivion, R6vegas, GRAW2, HL2:ORangeBox, Darkness, Fear, CoD4, Assassins Creed etc) and in my personal opinion, the PS3 exclusives (Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, Resistance FoM, Folklore etc.) interested me more than the FPS heavy 360 lineup.

The PS3 can't "finally be sold as a gaming machine", because it always was, its just that the general public is finally catching on.
