Even if Blu-Ray loses, it's still a great game system media, and it holds alot of information. So I can play my games without it having the processor decoding stuff on the fly.

There are still many HD movie currently available right now.

i guess people are misinterpeting what I'm saying.
I'm saying BD is a great gaming media, so it doesn't need to win a HD format war for it to be useful on the PS3.
Any thoughts?

I think so too.

However I'm trying to see if people think they need BD to be successful as a movie format in order for PS3 to do good.

well, i like the fact that it will convince more people to get the ps3 because its the cheapest BD player on the market, but it sucks that its the most expensive Game system on the market :P.....but overall i believe blueray is more nessasery than unessasery right now...

What ps3 doesnt need blu ray lol. DVD 9 which is a dual layer dvd at 9 gig is already limiting developers. Blue dragon for xbox 360 is 3 disk, so why would blu ray not be needed?

I say it's better for gaming than for movies right now.  Especially since they are using Mpeg 2, right now.
I say gaming first and then hey  I can play a HD movie also.

Sony went from first (PS2) to worst (PS3) and it's all because of Blu-Ray. They bet everything on it and will pay most of their market share in the gaming industry for it. Eventually, forcing blu-ray on the PS3 will be looked at as the worst mistake this generation if not in the history of video gaming. It gave the competition a head start (cause of delays), it priced the console out of reach and it scared off massive amounts of developer support.

That poll is kinda ridiculous but I would say it definitely wouldn't hurt 'cause it's already 360 = HD-DVD and PS3 = blu-ray. So whoever wins the format war doesn't necessarily win the console war, but it's just more ammo.

yes, Blue Ray needs to win this war because Blue Ray is used on PS3, if Blue Ray lost, there wont be Blue Ray burners and applications for Blue Ray that hackers can exploit. Pirate is on the way, the way I see pirate is a good thing for Sony, not bad thing. Look at PS2 and PS1, because people can buy cheap or make CD and DVD games. As the same time they support the increase in size of PS community.
Sorry for grammars and fragments.

If BR fails...PS3 will hardly be effected. The thing can run DVDs..and games could benefit from the extra storage space. A year from now the PS3's drive will be faster. Plus, it doesnt hurt to have a piece of technology history. :)

Good thing? Yes, they buy the consoles...but they're stealing games. The increase of pirates on the PS3 will only discourage developers away, more pirates = less profit. With the high budgets needed to make games these days, developers have very little to risk. Although third party hacks are cool for emulators (such as old school roms), stealing an actual game will just push third party away from Ps3. Its going to happen inevitably, but don't give them more credit than they deserves, in fact..dont PRAISE them. Pirating killed third party support on the PSP (among other reasons).

The format was is stupid. Majority of consumers who knwo about it are sitting back and waiting for the results of which one will be standard, and THEN investing their 800+ on a MOVIE player. Seriosuly, I wish the industry will freakin choose already, thus making it easier for the consumers to choose.

Look at UMD on the PSP. It is a huge failure as a movie format. It is not impacting the PSP as a game machine.

Only in American is regular DVD not good enough. Sure, I know everyone has fancy new Hi-def 1080 plasma tv's they wanna show off and people in America just love to spend money on something fancy and new like HD DVD and Blu-ray. Sure Blu-ray makes a great game format. Personally for me, the picture quaility on basic DVD looks great.  If i'm buying a ps3 i want it for games. Its a console, consoles play games. Sure its nice that you get the added Blu-ray player but most people don't have the cash to dish out a 1080 tv.  I think this format war between HD DVD and Blu ray is retarded. All it's gonna do is confuse consumers (the people who buy electronics) and hurt sales.

once bluray becomes the next new format, then the ps3 will start to shine. Just like how it won with Cd's rather than cartridges

doesnt need blu ray? probably

but that also means we didnt need cassetes when we had 8track

or DVDs when we had VHS

or vista when we had Xp

or houses when we had caves

its the nature of technology, if we didnt need new tech we'd still be living in caves hunting deer with wooden spears

its called progression

PS3 would be great even without blu-ray, but it's gonna be so huge in the near future, and sony is gunna pull ahead with that extra edge.

They said that the PS 1 didn't need a CD player.

They said that the PS2 didn't need a DVD player.

Now they're saying that the PS3 doesn't need a Blu-ray player. They can kiss-off.

My 2 cents.

Making Blu-Ray a standard feature of the PS3 will help the format war in Blu-Ray's favor. If it were an addon, like HD-DVD for the 360, how many people would invest in blu-ray movies? I sure wouldn't have. But since Blu-Ray was a nice side effect of being a PS3 owner, I know have a small Blu-Ray movie collection.

blueray is not needed right now but in a year when devs realize that 10gb of space is not enough to make a great game then blueray is needed. Look at GeOW its mad short because of the lack of room on the disk.

i dont think its needed now that i have a ps3. i have 4 games, madden 07, nba2k7, def jam icon, and oblivion. none of these games are near 25 gigs. developers are not using it yet, and its like the extra money was a waste. i also think that blu ray games and downloadable content, or micro transactions dont mix until the blu-ray disc is completely full. otherwise its a rip off.

who brought this topic back from the dead? lol

yes the games are on BDs

however when I started i asked if it needs to succeed as a movie format since it does games perfectly

the answer is no if the BD format loses PS3 will still succeed.

However now that we know BD is gonna do well there is no need.

Someone brought my topic back from a deep slumber or something

(this happened in Jan when there was a trillion XBOTs saying if BD loses then so does PS3)

PlayStation doesn't need Blu-Ray to win

Sony needs Playstation to use Blu-ray to win the format war, so they basically have a funding and are set for the next 15 years, financially

i believe that some ported 360 games could be put on dvds to play on ps3 as ps3 versions are the same as the 360 dvd versions, it could save us some retail tag value. first party ps3 games im sure need blu ray, devs can chuck in all thier ideas without squeashing some out leaving more content, larger multiplayer lvs, clearer uncompressed fmvs and audio, behind the scenes, bonus mini games, LOTS OF EXTRAS!

ps3 can live without bluray, but on most of it like first party games and future games, its going to give us much more

plus i love having a next gen system and then a next gen movie player included for about 1/3 the price - its bliss.

Well if sony sold the ps3 at 600$ without the blu-ray, the system would probably be near death. Still, sony would probably have a lower price if they didn't include the blu-ray player though.

I didn't bother reading this thread, and I'm sure someone else has mentioned this, but Sony implimented Bluray with the PS3 for bigger reasons than gaming capability. Sony knew the PS3 would sell regardless of price. By including a Bluray player in every PS3 they automatically have a huge share in the HD disc market. We've already seen the early results of this with Blockbuster's recent announcement that they'd be supporting the Bluray format exclusively. The HD DVD format wasn't selling while the Bluray was. Bluray sales are rising while HD DVD sales are stagnant. Sony's gamble has already paid off... even if the PS3 somehow goes the way of the Dreamcast, they now have a solid foothold in the next gen market and a very good chance at making Bluray the next major VHS/DVD type media format.

I think you mean Blu-ray doesn't have to win the format wars(which is fantasy, because it's pummeling HD-DVD to a pulp) for it to be a great format for games.

If they're seeing a boost in sales and are making enough, they may be able to lower the price of the discs. Winning the war will change many things in the long run.
