I have a 1st gen 80g, i hear it sometimes, but i rarely ever notice it. I used to have a 360, and that sounded like a helicopter taking off.

Hi Everyone,

I've just bought a 40Gb (UK version) from my local Game store, primarily for the blue-ray. Set the whole thing up, it has plenty of space and is on a shelf of it's own in my media center. Everything was ok until we came to watch a blue-ray (Die Hard 4.0 to be precise), 15 mins into the film the thing sounded like it was about to take off! To give an indication as to the noise level increae - before the fans my surround sound was on 14 which was comfortable for dialogue, when the fans came on it had to be cranked up to 20 to hear dialogue! all well and good until it wasn't someone speaking then it was way too loud to listen to.

Anyway, did a bit more experimenting and found it didn't matter what it was doing (even idle) after 10-15 mins the fans kicked in and didn't go back down. I took the unit back to the Game store and they put it on test - guess what - no a whisper from the fans. The only difference was the temperature - it was freezing where they tested the unit. They basically said there was nothing they could, or would be prepared, to do. I purchased one of their additional fan units to see if that would help - it didn't.

When I got back I did a bit more experimenting, I put my unit in the window and opened the window. The fan didn't kick in at all, so I closed the window and after 10 mins the fans came on, opened the window and the fans stepped down.

Bascially I've come to the conclusion that unless I can get a stream of cold air into the unit the fans will always kick in - this is a bit of a problem in my lounge.

I'm going to try sony to see if they have any suggestions - but I suspect I will have to get used to the noise, and my neighbours will have to get used to loud movies :P

I'll update if I get anything from Sony - or if I find a suitable cooling system.

N

My PS3 steps up to its highest level about 25 minutes into being on. I am starting to think that there is a real problem with the PS3 itself. Here is my story. I have had 3 PS3's. The first one I exchanged at the store after trying to watch a blu-ray movie. The second one I sent back to sony. Now I have the third one and it still has the same problem. I hear people say that their fan steps down when they return to the xmb menu. None of the 3 have ever done this. I have friends that have PS3's and out of everyone I am the only one with this problem. I was just on the phone with Sony and they told me that that is how the fans are supposed to function. I have personally heard and read that it's not. When I told the Customer Service guy he didn't know what he was talking about he became very rude and got off the phone. I really don't know what to do anymore. It is impossible to watch a blu-ray with the fan making more noise than my 360. I'm curious if what other people have done. I know I'm not the only one with this issue.

My PS3 fans get louder as I play but I don't think that's a bad thing. It's keeping the system running cool when it's working hard. I didn't vote because none the choices fit for me. I had my PS3 on while I slept last night to charge the remote and it didn't bother me at all! BTW my PS3 is about 4 feet away from my head! I like to keep him close to me at night!!;)

Have you by any chance tried standing it vertical in a open area even with the windows closed. I never turn my system off and the fans very seldom go over mid speed. But I found that when it's vertical the heat can escape much easier.
