I have been trying to upgrade my hard drive in my PS3 and have not had much success. When I try to install the new hard drive, it says, "Cannot start. The correct hard disk was not found." I have an external hard drive and have already backed up all of my information from myPS3 so I could restore it after I put the new one in, but the new one is not getting formatted like the instructions onSony's website say it should. Any suggestions...?

Yea-Get on your pc with a memory stick or cd rom-Go to playstation.com and download the latest firmware for PS3.Then make a file titled PS3 and within that file another file titled UPDATE and put the firmware download into there. Then plug your USB memory stick into your PS3 and Hey Presto!-It should update your new hard drive and then you can run through all the initial set up.

Think that's only if you're gonna use it as an external USB hard drive. When i fitted a Western Digital 320GB hard drive to my 80Gb PS3,i just put it straight into PS3 and applied the latest firmware update via USB memory stick as i have already said in my 1st posting in this topic.

You need to put the latest update 3.15 on a flashdrive and put it in the PS3. Here it is on the left side down a bit.

Go onto Youtube.com there are a bunch of videos showing how to properly upgrade your hard-drive. Some crappy ones too :) but most of them are from people who have a clue what they are doing

These are specific instructions for how to upgrade. First, when you install a new hard drive, make sure that you have an external source to install the newest vestion of the operating system. This can be a flash drive or an external hard drive. Make sure the connection is tight (all screws are in place) and then power on the PS3. It will recognize the system and give directions for how to proceed. They will be something like press start and select at the same time and then it will take about 2 minutes to install. I did it with a 500GB Seagatge Momentus, 7200RPM and it worked fine. Good Luck!

I have the latest firmware update on an external hard drive, a usb drive, and a cd...but it still tells me that I have the wrong hard drive installed. Do I need to back-up my old hard drive then format it, removing all of the information on it, then install the new one...or should I be able to back-up then just turn it off and proceed with the installation and setup of the new hard drive?

You should back up the old drive, then remove it. Then put the new one in. It will give you some message that's kind of confusing, but you need to install the latest update. Download it from the Sony website - take your thumb drive and put a file on it called PS3, and within that file, create a file called UPDATE - it needs to be in all caps. Put the latest firmware update in the UPDATE file. Plug that into the USB on the PS3 and it should load it, and then you can continue with the formatting and stuff. The PS3 will format your new drive, you don't need to do anything with it beforehand.
