A professor of mine had us learn about Multi-Layered Blu-ray discs. Apparently there are products in the works that go far beyond just two layers to the disc. One thing we discussed is the fact that the PS3 is not capable of reading layered blu-ray discs.

I was hoping someone could confirm that this is true. I was also hoping that someone could tell me if the new PS3 slim has fixed this issue (I am not getting my hopes up because it wouldn't make much sense to have discs that only worked on some PS3s)

This is somewhat dissappointing to me, as it takes away a lot of the potential of Blu-Ray for the current consoles in my eyes. Especially since I already see the availability of dual layered blu-ray discs on sale. Though I can understand some of the issue as the 10 pack of dual layer blu-ray discs was 158 dollars and the 15 pack of single layer was 43 dollars. So they are about 5 times as expensive.

So does anyone have information on the subject?

taken from wikipedia so can't guarentee accuracy:

In December 2008, Pioneer Corporation unveiled a 400GB Blu-ray Disc (containing 16 data layers, 25GB each) that will be compatible with current players after a firmware update. Its planned launch is in the 2009–10 time frame for ROM and 2010–13 for rewritable discs. Ongoing development is under way to create a 1TB Blu-ray Disc as soon as 2013.

I would think that since the PS3 has frequent firmware updates... then it would be compatible with new Blu-Ray formats.

I wouldn't worry about it because Sony is releaseing firmware updates that keeps the Blu-Ray player up to date with the latest firmware.

Why would you even want a 50GB+ disc this generation?

I'm sure developers would find their own reasons.

yea its not like they can increase te picture quality because it outputs on maximum 1080p so the more space doesnt allow for any visual upgrades.... the only thing i can think of are for large movie collections such as the james bond ones, or saw(idk why anyone would want all 5 but...) it would save alot in shipping and manufacturing... obviously it would cost more considering u would be getting multiple movies... it would be interesting seeing wat companies do with even larger spaces....

Would a firmware update fix that? It seems to me to be a hardware issue. It has to be able to peer through the layers and if the hardware can't handle it then no firmware updates would manage that.

yes provided the firmware keeps up. any internet capable blu-ray player can. however with a drive at 2x what would be the point? the advantage would be nullified by such a slow read speed or canceled by the use of data copying.

Don't worry about the hardware TC, the BD spec for ultra multi-layer discs was blueprinted before the PS3 even came out. Now the drive speed, as mentioned above, should be the bigger concern.

Well if the drive speed is the concern, does the PS3 slim have the same drive speed as the other models?
