Did you upgrade your hard drive? If you did which one did you go for? I read on most sites getting a Hard Drive running @ 7200 rpm will cause it to over heat? Any comments and suggestions will be great and check this out & tell me what you think.

It's a lie about the 7200RPM one. I upgraded to a 100GB Seagate SATA 7200RPM. I have had no such problems whatsoever. I was able to play DMC4 for 7 hours straight (i was reeeally bored). Nothing happened. A call from Sony themselves also confirms that nothing happens from upgrading it to one even with false claims that they remove your warranty.

BIG NOTE: WHAT YOU LINKED ARE 3.5" HARD DRIVES WHICH CAN ONLY BE USED EXTERNALLY WITH THE PS3 AND CAN'T HOLD SAVE DATA OR GAME INSTALLS. Please remember to get a 2.5" laptop hard drive as that's what the PS3 uses

7200RPM will NOT overheat your Playstation 3; however, 7200RPM 2.5" hard drives are generally a significantly more expensive than 5400RPM hard drives for the same amount of space. So, what's wrong with 7200RPM? It's the fact that it won't do much for anything. The difference is VERY minimal.

I don't know if it's the way that the PS3 is designed or what, but the difference is negligable. I've had then running side by side with my friends stock 7200RPM and my 5400RPM if anyones asking. We've both had ours since January-March-ish with our Hard Drives in it.

It's like the difference between DDR2 RAM and DDR3 RAM. While DDR3 is better, nothing is optimized for it so while it looks better on paper the performance can't really be seen.

P.S.: That's an overpriced hard drive. Try to find a local computer store, or better yet if you can buy online... Get something from Newegg (USA) or NCIX (Canada). The prices are alot better.

Example: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1044

You can get a 500 Gig for that price. Also, try sticking with Seagate or Western Digital hard drives. They have the least failure rate (and thus a longer life span) and are the quietest.

http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=2000029

There's a good article detailing it. If you really want to be more immersive, go ahead and get a 7200 RPM. I just find that 5400 RPM's are significantly cheaper, but that margin has been slimmed over the last couple of months.

upgraded mine this week end from 60 gig to 160gig and I put in 5400. Yes I could have put in a 7200 but the company that makes the console suggested not to use it. I will go with them.

Basically flip your PS3 over (if it's vertical), click the little "flick in" thing, slide the hard drive out, unscrew the hard drive from the mount.

Get your new hard drive, mount it onto the bracket, put it on the slot, push up, and put the thing that you flicked off back on.

Bam done. Simple as that.

Amazingly, I can. Especially when Home is released, assuming they keep with the "You can stream video off your PS3 through home to other people".

I can use 2 Terabytes on my gaming rig :P Dunno how, but I do. Please take note of the edit I just made though, I didn't realize you linked to a 3.5" hard drive until a couple minutes after you posted while I was editting it.

They don't care either way... The way I think why they would suggest that is because it's ultimately cheaper; however, with games continually installing data on your hardrive the RPM helps way more significantly... and the space makes you not have to worry.

It can be, but only if you do ghetto modding like I've done. For the normal person, you need a laptop (2.5") hard drive which are significantly more expensive for 7200RPM.

There is this one Western Digital 160gb 2.5" Hdd I've had my eye on. It's going for 80 bucks, i think it's a solid deal.

One question tho...

How do I copy all my game saves before I switch the drives so I don't have to start all over again??

Do I have to format it somehow or can I drop it in out of the box?

Thx in a advance and sorry for noob questions

Trust me, go with the seagate momentus 2.5" 320gig 7200rpm 16mb cache.

I am so happy with mine and the heat is no issue... what heat, its no problem.

Anything loading from the HDD will be faster but blueray disk loading is still the same.

I would like to see some sort of test that compares load/install times on both. I may upgrade my HDD soon (120GB 5400RPM right now) as I plan on utilizing more of its multimedia features and installing more downloadable games.

I have a 250GB HDD with about 200GB of free space. I would only use the 5400RPM drives and that is what came with the system and I have a 60GB model and do not wish to push it over its own limits.

There are decent articles on upgrading the hardrive all over the 'net...CNet has a good tutorial along with recommendations on type of drive to use. Gamespot also did a comparison of 5400rpm vs 7200rpms. Sorry didn't feel like searching for the link but i'm sure with a little browsing you can find it. As for over heating when using higher rpms, some articles have found the 7200 to be an issue, but most of the articles say it's not a concern. With the negligible difference in speed, I'd stick with the the stock 5400 but I think you'd be fine either way. Good luck. :)

As for backing up your HD, you'll have to save the game/video/music/pic files you want to keep to an external drive or USB flash-drive. All of the other features of your XMB are native to the ps3 and do not need to be backed up.
