that's not what i'm asking. I'm asking if PS3 is HDCP compliant which I'm hearing it isn't.

Just because something is HD doesn't mean it's HDCP compliant.

"High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) is a form of digital copy protection developed by Intel Corporation to prevent copying of digital audio and video content as it travels across DisplayPort, Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), Gigabit Video Interface (GVIF), or Unified Display Interface (UDI) connections, even if such copying would be permitted by fair use laws. The specification is proprietary, and implementing HDCP requires a license."

If the HDMI port on the PS3 is being used the receiving display must be HDCP compliant. Reason being the HDCP on the PS3 is looking to handshake.

HDCP compliance is generally a concern on the receiving side as I don't believe displays typically initiate the handshake.

If it is going to receive HD signals above 480p from the PS3 over HDMI it had better be HDCP compliant. Because the PS3 is going to drop the signal to 480p if it doesn't get an affirmative from the HDCP handshake.
