Wondered if anyone can help me with this one as having browsed through afew internet forums, I don't think I'm alone with this issue. Bought a new 40" LCD SOny Bravia TV over Christmas specifically for playing my PS3 in Hi-Res. problem I've having is that when you connect the two devices via a HDMI, the system comes up with a message that says something along the lines of 'If the setting is incorrect, the screen will switch off for 30 seconds'. You then click to proceed and it turns my TV off! I've had a new PS3 (Sony were very kind and offered me a new one but unfortunatley the new one has the same issue, even with the latest Software Update installed). I've tried 3 different HDMI leads (one from HMV, one from the official Sony Centre shop and the last one from a mate's XBox 360). None work. Finally, the odd bit. My friend tried wiring his PS3 up with his HDMI to my telly, and it worked fine! Full Hi-Res and everything! So, I'm stumped. Before anyone recommends it, I've already tried a PS3 reset (done by holding the power button till you hear multiple beaps) and I've also tried connecting the HDMI before and after the system is switched on. Neither works. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Matt

Thats why I brought my HDMI cable from Sony. You have to make sure its Catagory 2 version 1.3 type of cable. And all of sony's cables are that. Check their site.

Hmmm... you could try hooking up your PS3 with the provided composite cables and going to system settings and seeing if you can manually change the HDMI output resolution. Does your TV support 1080p?

Thanks for the responses to the forum post so far. For the record, I've tried several HDMI's (none of which work) and my TV most definitley supports full 1080 (it even has 'Playstation 3 Compatible' printed on the box!) Any other ideas would be most appreciated.

Connect the PS3 via the included cables - do all the settings for connecting a HDMI - unplug and turn of the PS3 - switch to HDMI cables - change input on TV and see if that works.

There could be a handshake issue so I would then (if above doesn't change anything) put on the tv first on the right input then the PS3 and if that doesn't work turn on the PS3 first then the TV.

Have you tried above allready?

Unless you have a broken HDMI cable that isn't the issue the 1.3 crap written above wouldn't affect this issue (and hardly anything else except your wallet)

One more thing - how many HDMI inputs on the tv? If more than one have you tried them all?

I didn't have the ps3 do the autodetect - I did it manually...

Thanks for this. I've (unfortunatley) tried all that you've suggested already but to no avail. For reference, there are 2 HDMI sockets on the telly, both of which I've tried. The only other thing I can can think of is that when I used my mate's PS3 on the TV, all of the channels were tuned. Since moving it upstairs into my bedroom, I haven't tuned them as i don't have an aerial lead. Very much doubtr that this would be it - what do you reckon?

I had the same problem. What worked for me is turning off the PS3 and then turning it back on (after connect the HDTV and PS3 via HDMI cable). When the PS3 came back on, it went to a screen and said it had detected 'such and such' and I just followed the on-screen instructions from there. My PS3 was running in HD resolution within the next minute and has been doing so since then (Jan. 15th).

This is a strange problem for sure, but you may have to use the composite cable and see if there is a setting that's not correct. Usually if everything is connected correctly the PS3 can auto-detect the correct connection by holding the power button until the second beep on the start-up of the PS3 (just make sure the TV is on and the correct input is selected). When the screen pops up saying that there has been a connection change found you only have a few seconds to accept these settings before it deverts back to previous settings. I hope this works for you.

I have tried the restart method many times to change the connection input and it has never failed. I tried one day just as fast as I could to see how well this worked and even without removing the connections from the system (only change the input from the TV's menu).

I did find that if you hold your finger on the power button to long after the second beep it may not work. You have to remove your finger at the time of the second beep.

Try resetting you PS3 by holding the power button for 5 seconds and start from scratch. This will make your PS3 go to the default settings. It could be the HDMI also. I had problems with 2 HDMIs, the $30 Walmart special which I can't recall the brandname, and I took the cable over to a friends house who also has a PS3 and his monster cable worked fine but when we plugged mine in, there was nothing.
