Yeah I returned mine for an exchange then when I got the new one home it had scratches all over it. I was gonna take that one back the next day but couldn't find the reciept. I think the dude at gamestop kept it because I got sh**** with him. I was in a hurry to get out of there after the confrontation.

i dont know what caused the issue and yes, i keep my system updated. it was working flawlessly till like half hour ago when i turned on the system for the first time tonite for my cod4 gaming session and it wont read the disc so i thought id reset the system and try a new game but it wont read any of it so i was really frustrated and decided to reformat it. sighhh... good thing this generation of consoles allows you to backup files into your pc so im not worried about losing any data...

Hey guys this doesn't happen as often as you might think... I've had mine since launch and I haven't had any problems. However I had some freezing issues with assassin's Creed but it was a problem with the game itself and there is a patch to solve this problem. COD4 worked fine thou...

There was also an issue with one of the updates that certain people experienced i think it was with update 2.00 so i just skippoed that one and updated diectly to 2.01 and I haven't had problems either.

If none of the above help or solves the problem it might be a bad batch that got damaged during shipping or something and yoiu should be able to exchange it without any hassle but like I said out of everyone I know with a PS3 (all of them the original 60G one thou) haven't had any problems.

Hope you guys come right.:)

Oh btw it can be corrupt data somewhere that might be causing it as well... So formatting your system should do the trick, unless it is a disc issue.

This happened to me too. I was watching Blu-ray movies one sunday and they just started freezing for no reason. It was like one minute everything was fine, the next my PS3 was dieing. I'd restart the PS3 but it lost the ability to load the disc. The screen would go black then I'd get an error message and told there was a problem loading the disc.

I phoned Sony. They told me to format the hard drive. That didn't work. The next day it stopped even recognizing a disc had been put into the BD drive. I live in the UK so this problem isn't just limited to a bad batch from Best Buy as someone said earlier.

PS2 also had problems early on with the dvd drive dieing. You'd think Sony would've learnt from their mistakes. I wonder if PS4 will have the same problem.

This happened to me as-well, and I was playing COD4 but I don't think the game caused the failure, probably it's just a matter of luck, plus a lot of people play COD4, that's just a coincidence. Just get a new one from sony.

Mine just stopped reading discs last night when I was playing TUROK. Just wouldn't come off the load screen, so switched it off and it hasn't read discs since, tried every disc i've got. No luck. Got mine from Toys r us, Going to try and take it back tomorrow, had it just over a month.

dont worry dude...same thing happened to me...people saying u dont take care of it well and stuff are being pretty stupid...sony always has had problems with disc reading failures and stuff(ps2 in the beginning) and this happened to my 60 gig while playing vegas...just call sony. They will have you a new box within a week or 2 (2 for me cus i called during christmas)...the box will be one day overnight shipping...go to bestbuy and u can ask for them to make a copy of your receipt(it's what i did cus i lost my receipt) and than just send it. You will get it a week later(luckily i got a brand new 60gig) and be merry as ever xD

O_O i did too...just because it's a ps3 doesnt mean it's a godly system that is indestructable...it still has a failure rate and will show with increasing sales of the ps3 O_o...all because ur not one of the unlucky who had any problems doesnt mean all the ones who have just kick their ps3 around or something

Not my point, never said it had a 0% failure rate now did I? I am just saying I am tired of everyone trying to say that they kept their system in perfect condition and it was no way their own falt for the system breaking. I do not and can not believe that for one minute. Now that is not to say that is true with all people that has had problem, but I am 100% sure it is how most of them break.

Hello, this is my first time posting here. I also have fallen victim to the blu ray flu. I have had my ps3 for 2 months with zero probs, then I pick up COD4 and play it once, and all h3ll breaks loose. Looks like COD4 is the culprit, in my case as well.

Well after 36 days of owning a brand new 40gb PS3 bought from Gamestop, I have fallen victim to this as well. It happened just about an hour ago... Wasn't able to find the damn reciept but I bought it on a debit card. Planning to call them once they open up and hopefully they can pull that sale off their system and print off another reciept for me.

I left it on the XMB screen while i was browsing on my laptop after a long session of Oblivion. Decided to play Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 "I had already inserted the disc after I was done with Oblivion", started the game. Gave me a black screen for about 30 seconds then displayed an error reading the disc and jumped back on the XMB screen. But this time all the hardware icons took about 40-50 seconds to load. After seeing this I turned off the PS3 through the controllers "PS button" and turned it back on. From then on the PS3 wouldn't not load ANY discs and only gives a "loading bubble" in the very top right corner. I've tried backing up/reformatting the PS3 to no aval. I've treated the PS3 and all of my games very well. "Not a single smudge mark on ps3, dusted ps3 daily, 10ft. of space for PS3 to vent in back, no fingerprints or scratches on game discs, etc..." and I still recieved this error.

Almost $1,000 worth of equipment, games, accessories, and the PS3 for 36 days...

I've experience this problem before and had to return it. It's like RROD from 360 where your game system can no longer funtion when it comes to playing games. You'll know when it won't work is when all you get is a loading circle on the top of your right screen meaning that it can no longer play disks. It's best to call Sony to solve the problem.

Yea just 29.99% less frequent. But if you had to ask me I would say more like 39.99% less.

For like the 100 time already, COD4 dosen't freacking break your PS3! yeah, PS3s eventualy kick the bucket, put it not because of COD4, Its because it THE MOST played game on the PS3 that it seems like this, but its not.

It going to be the same issue with MGS4, people will start to say, OMFG MSG4 BREAKS MY PS3! chill people..., and play the damn thing, and if it burns up, you can always send it to sony, remember the failure rate of a PS3 is around 3% ;)
