The same thing happened to me. Everything was fine one minute, the next Uncharted crashed and the PS3 was f*****.
The PS3 wouldn't recognise any disc put into it after that. I've also seen loads of topics on this forum about the disc drive inside their PS3 dying. Looks like the PS3 has the same problem early PS2's had. Faulty disc drives. You'll have to contact Sony and ask for a repair. Sony are very good to deal with, much better than Microsoft.
BTW. There will probably be some blind fanboys in here soon saying they don't believe you and saying PS3's "don't just break".
actually, it seems to me that the people who have the newer ps3 versions (40GB & 80GB) are having this problem.. people who have their 20GB and 60GB models are not having this problem apparently dbzee_coolGood to hear, I assume my one yr warranty is up, I don't know what options I have left, in case anything was to happen to my launch console.
this is not strange happens alot i was looking into buying one, looked on ebay and seen a whole bunch not powering on or not reading discs heres some proof and it aint one or two its pages and pages of them.

I'm on my fourth PS3. The 3 that broke were 60GB. All electrical equipment has the potential to break for no reason. It doesn't matter how big the hard drive is.
I also had to send my Wii in for repair because games weren't loading right. You could hear the disc skipping in the drive and in-game dialogue was jumping. I know Wii's and PS3's have very low fail rates but they do fail.

What is your firmware?

dude u have awful luck I am on my 4th 360 and have the other 2 systems. Ps3 is brand new and works great tho just use it as a blu ray play until metal gear comes out cause it has no games. Wii plays fine but not sure if their is a problem with it because alot of my games have werid marks when its on my screen like u see random pixels every where. I think its cause its not an hd system and i have a 1080p screen
I just really want my xbox back cause Super Smash is fun but I want to shoot things

yea i havent heard of any problems with the earlier models but my nieces got a 40gig and had that problem just like a month or two later. that sucks, man. i remember my ps2's drive failed on me. worst.
Did you all update your firmware regularly?
My cousin has a 80Gb and had the same problem, I just update his firmware and every thing went back to normal...
Dagnelli
I always update, and when the probelm happend i tried to update but there were no new updates availabe.
WOW your on your 3rd ps3 and your Wii skips bro you need to take care of your things better than that man seriously no reason you should be on your 3rd ps3(yeah i know ps3 do fail). take better care of your stuff.POPEYE1716
I do look after my stuff. Who said I didn't? Don't assume anything. You have no idea what you're talking about. I have games from the PS1 days that are in pure mint condition. Not a single scratch on the disc.
The first PS3 I had kept crashing. Sony sent me a replacement that also had problems and was covered in scratches and fingerprints. The consoles Sony send you aren't new. They call them re-manufactured.
Instead of getting another one from Sony I took it back to the store, with my receipt from the first PS3, and traded it for a brand new retail 60GB. That one only lasted two months. I had only used it a couple of times for games and watched a few Blu-ray movies. First time it crashed I was using the web browser. Shortly after that Uncharted crashed then the disc drive stopped working.
I've only had my Wii since just before Christmas '07. The very first time I loaded Wii Sports I could here the disc skipping and the game took about 5 minutes to load. I knew there was a problem straight away. The same thing happened with Metroid 3 so I phoned Nintendo and they fixed the problem and had my Wii back to me within a week. The Wii was faulty from the day I bought it. I've worked in warehouses for large retail chains and I've seen how the stock is handled. The Wii could've easily been mistreated and dropped on more than one occasion.
And to the person who asked about firmware I can't say for sure the exact firmware version. My PS3 is always up to date with the latest firmware though so it would've been whatever was the current version at that time. There's been so many different versions who keeps track?
Sorry for writing so much. I know some of you have trouble reading anything longer than three sentences.

i'm in the exact same boat. i'm on my fourth 360 and probably going to need a fifth (still getting disc read errors...argghhhh) and just got my ps3 in jan. so far so good, and i would be really disappointed if it crapped out on me. one of the main reasons i got the ps3 is cause i'm tired of messing with the other one.

Well I use my Wii on a 1080p screen and I don't get the random pixel problem. It must be a problem with your Wii or TV.
out of the people who have broke ps3's how many of you have them plugged into a surge protector? or w.e they are called gwf123
All my PS3's were plugged into a surge protector. Surge protectors are fine for things like consoles as long as you only have your console and maybe your tv running through it at a time since they don't use many amps. If you had your PS3, fridge freezer, dish washer and washing machine running through it at the same time you might hit problems.
when i got my ps3 perfect, and now non of my games work,it just happened for no reason,i was playin' TF2 then everything suddenly stopped working, all of my games, but when i try my games on my bros Japanese ps3,it worksdarkprince99
That is what everyone says. LOL
It is always the the PS3 is perfect and the games are bran new. Come on already.

Do you always browse the web? Careful with viruses. I know the PS3 is good against them but you never know.
Yup - people always forget how packages are really handled during shipping. We all like to think our box is carefully picked up and put down wherever it goes, but the grim reality is no one gives a s*** and just throws them around.
Sounds like both of you crashed your disc drives. I'd contact Sony or wherever you bought it and get a replacement. It's odd that whenever it does happen, it happens to the same people over and over. Murphy's Law I guess. I've had mine since launch without a hitch. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go knock on wood.

That really sucks. I hope Sony addresses this issue because...it may become a big one and nobody wants that happening. I hope things work out for you.
