PS3 only comes with AV video cables??

That is true. But you can use your old PS2 component cables or any HDMI cable.

yep, it's true- they did this so that everyone would be able to get their system hooked up. Quite a few people still use normal SD televisions for their gaming. HD cables aren't that expensive if you shop around (as mentioned Monoprice is a good inexpensive source for HDMI cables) or pick up a set of components for the PS2 (they use the same multi-out port on the PS3 as they did the PS2).lyndonAPI

You just had to add your fanboy views without responding to the OP. Did he ask about a wireless network? it's weird that everything is justified by comparing to another console. Yet you have to buy a headset, video cables and soon maybe a controller that supports rumble. But no everything is compared to another console which makes no sense. A wireless network cost around $20.00 and not tha many people need it.

I  have the componant AV cables.  I'm hoping that's good quality?  I have to wait till I get the HDMI to DVI adapter before I can use my HDMI cables...

since when were rechargable batteries or the cable required.  When did the ps3 come with a head set...oh..never.

If you look in the manual, provided in the box that states which kind of cable is packed in, it tells you the components are good up to 1080p. 

I think this has been stated many many times already. Component cables should have been included for what they claim to the be the "next-gen" HD gaming machine. It was cheap on Sony's part not to include the very cheap component cables at the very least. The ability to buy cheap cables isn't even the point. The fact that they promote and advertise the PS3 as the end all be all of HD gaming and movie watching hardware.

Like everyone needs any of those things. i already had rechargable batteries and a charger so had no need for the play and charge kit plus the wired headset works just fine for me.

They packed in the common denominator of cables.  They could have packed in HDMI cables but what would folks without HDMI equipped TV's have done?  There would have been people complaining that Sony was forcing them to buy new TV's.  They could have packed in every cable imaginable and people would have complained about all the useless cables they got and what were they gonna do with them.  Sony could have offered to come to their houses and set up their PS3's with whatever cable was best for their setup, along with a free 5.1 wireless sound system but people would have complained about finding time in their schedule to have them come over for the install.

What about component cable since basically everyone with a tv made in the last 10 years probably have that input? Why not a cable like the 360 that has both composite and component?

My TV is about 6 years old and it doesn't have component.  Honestly, I despised all the extra connections hanging from the back of my displays with the 360 Components and VGA cables.

Only a really cheap basic TV wouldn't have component. I got a TV over 10 years ago and it came with component and S-video plus I don't know what kind of stand you hae to actually see the connections at the back of your Tv.

if he hadn't called them ugly av cables and bagged on sony for keeping standard options i might have been nicer, assuming everyone has a HD tv is stupid and luckily a mistake the poster of this petty topic made and not sony.

It's a 24" Sony Wega.

The stand was either my computer desk for VGA use or an AV component stand with the TV on top.
