technically the slim is better because of the fact that it gives more playing time per sitting, but i prefer the design of the original in piano black
Well, I don't think Slim has any speciality. It's just thinner but anyway same performance. BDJoe_Gamer
Yeah, I agree with you. I own an Original and I think its the same as the Slim, and I don't really mind it being fatter. I also prefer touch sensors over buttons, but I know many people disagree with me.
I like the new slim one. Going to be selling my 40 gig and upgrading to a slim ASAP. Just waiting for a bundle with some good games.
I like my 2nd generation original... I've got one of the 80gb MGS ones w/ BC, and supposidly less chance of YLOD.
It's got 2 extra usb ports, and build in card readers.
Mostly I enjoy the BC features. I still like to play ps2 games now and then, and don't want to have to deal w/ buying another one.
Well i Do like the look of the slim and when my PS3 Phat packs up then i'll buy one.But all PS3s are just Great anyhows and were all part of the same great gaming experience.
I prefer the original in almost every aspect except the size and power consumption. I found the loss of the other os feature in the slim particularly disappointing. Even the loss of ps2 backwards compatability and 2 usb ports was unfortunate in the later phat models. So IMO the best were the original phats, followed by the revised phats, and last the slim. As the Slim being the most cut down model designed to appeal to the masses and save sony money.

I have the exact same model as you, and mine just got YLOD yesterday. I keep it covered when its not in use, it's in a well ventilated area, the temp. never goes past 72 degrees Fahr. in my room, and I treated it like my baby. I have to admit I'm pretty pissed off, it only lasted 18 months, and I really wish I had that xbox 360 warranty for 3 years right about now. All I can say is that I used it almost every day, but when I pay 500$ for a console I expect it to last longer then 18 months, and the 1 year warranty is a freaking joke when you compare it to what Microsoft offers.
the fat models, since games dont crash or freeze or glitch on them nearly as much as the slim models. have u guys tried playing fallout 3 goty on the slim model? jesus, it actually works great on the fat models, just a couple of frame drops here and there maybe
also, they wont overheat as easily on the slim models and firmware updates wont destroy fat models, for some reason they have destroyed slim models tho. WOW.
Excuse me? What features did the slim gain over other "phat" models of PS3 (including the full-bc models)? About the only thing the slim really gained over prior models that I could find and see was a bigger hard drive installed from the factory. But given that the ps3 has the relatively unique abiliy of being able to install a standard notebook sata hard drive into it for usage, that really seems to be a moot point. You could buy a 500GB hard drive that will fit and function in any ps3 now for about $100 USD online now, which should be more than enough storage for all but the most avid PS3 players (like that guy hakoom with 100 platinums and counting). The lower MSRP was purely for a need to remain somewhat competitive in the console market. With the Wii and arcade 360's @ $200 USD, and the Elite having replaced the Pro for the $300 spot, Sony needed to do something, by pricing the slim that had the same amount of storage at an equal price to lure over potential buyers.the original looks better but the slim has more features/more hard drive and lower price

The slim can stream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI which allows for the audio to be decoded by your A/V reciever rather than the PS3 itself. It's good if you have a nice reciever.
Also, it supports Bravia Synch and other HDMI CEC features found on various brands of TVs. What this means is that if your TV has an HDMI CEC feature, you can pair it with the slim and be able to navigate the XMB and turn on/off the PS3 with the remote. It's a nice feature that I was sad to find out only the Slim supports.
So basically a couple of features that could very well be added to the other ps3's via firmware update. The PS3's HDMI wasn't initially 1.3a either, but that functionality was added thanks to a firmware update. Just like how the 360 was updated to allow upscaling to 1080p even with games that did not explicitly support it. And how the ps3 was updated to allow multiple audio outs so that you could have the HDMI supplying audio as well as audio through the digital optical out, and the standard stereo audio part of the A/V multi-out port. Unless there's some additional chip on the slim's PCB that governs the CEC functionality, I fail to see how that is something that couldn't just be added in for the phat ps3's either. And if it is indeed a chip, why waste it on that when they very well could have added the PS2 EE+GS for BC instead, and have given us stalwarts a reason to buy another? The slim can stream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio over HDMI which allows for the audio to be decoded by your A/V reciever rather than the PS3 itself. I don't know if bitstreaming HD audio could be added to a PS3 orignal update, but, like you said, CEC might be able to be added. I hope it is, but knowing Sony, it probably won't lol.
Obviously the features aren't important enough to get one to upgrade to the slim. Still, if one has a nice reciever and is just now buying a PS3, he or she might choose the Slim over any other SKU.
