So this just started yesterday. While playing a game of NCAA 09, about 5 min into the game (online vs someone) my ps3 beeps, shuts off, and red light blinks. Now it does this every time. Here is what I have tried. The ps3 still comes on, works fine UNTIL I play a game, then it does this a few mins into the game. I have hard restarted from the back, I have held the power button until it beeps 2 times and done a file reinstall, I have done a total reinstall of whole system. The last fix of a total reinstall actually let me play my game for almost 20 mins before doing it, but none the less it did it again. This is not the same issue as it turning off, and when turning on the green turns to yellow and then blinking red. This only seems to do it when playing games. Other than that it can sit there and chat and play around in the menu as long as I want. Iam guessing its dead, but figured i'd post here to see if theres any last ditch efforts before I can this thing. I am a youth pastor and I purchased this PS3 for my students to have before our youth services start. I'd love to get it fixed, but everything I have read and searched for doesnt seem to work. Any comments, solutions?

Usually a flashing yellow light means it is done for. How long have you had your ps3? It may be under the store warranty, or if it's less than a year old Sony will fix it for free. If your 1 year warranty is out Sony charges $150 to fix it. IMO, you've tried just about everything. I would give Sony a call to see what they suggest. From my dealing with them (years ago, PSP problems) their customer service is great.

Definitely sounds like its the end of the road if you got the flashing yellow light. All you can do now is call Sony, and get it on its way for repairs.

That's what I was thinking but his post is unclear. He says he can be on the menu, but just can't play games after 10-15 mins. But then he says he turns it on, it flashes yellow, and then goes to red. So I'm not really sure what he means.

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure what to make of that, but I would still say its toast if it cuts out and flashes the yellow light when attempting to play a game.

Dude you should be fine. Ive been playing games, blu-rays and music on the playstation 3 for a lil over 2 years and it's just gave me a problem yesterday. I'm sure the new PS3's on shelves are more reliable then the older once. Honest you shouldn't have a problem, I just hope a blinking red light means over heating and to just give it a rest.

Now the Yellow light, I'm not so sure about...

What on earth are you people doing to your systems?! I've owned 3 for a long time and they get played on tons and they have always worked fantastically. One is a 20gb I bought on launch, one is a 60 gb I got 4 months later, and one is a 40 gb I got about 8 months ago. The 20 gb model has been played on relentlessly since launch, andthe 60 gb has had tons of usage, and now the 40 gb has been getting tons of usage for months. I just don't understand what people are doing to theirs?

People place their systems in tightly confined spaces and then ask why it overheats...

Try cutting a hole in the bottom of a microwave and stick your head inside of it for a few hours and see if you begin to overheat. I used to have the heating problems until I moved my system into the open and now she runs better than ever. Food for thought.

why do u have 3 ps3's? and any way its not always a matter of what people are doing. things break. its a fact of life. justbecuase you have been lucky does not mean that other people must be doing something wrong.

OK, I didn't re-read my post, but I don't recall saying that the yellow light came on. If i did I am sorry for confusion. This is not the yellow light of death. The yellow light DOES NOT come on at all. Everything works just as normal until 5-10 mins into a game, and then it shuts off and the red light blinks. I press power it goes off, and then I can turn it right back on and it acts normal again until I go to play. My ps3 is out in the open on the floor so its not in a confined space or anything like that. Where would I get the customer service number to call and ask them for possible solutions? The thing doesn't act dead, but all I know is i can't play a game and no one seems to know what to do to fix it.

If its theres no yellow light and its just freezing when your playing a game, but the Ps3 isn't that hot, your Blu-ray laser might have just failed and needs replaced. You should call sony and get it fixed, but if its not under warranty anymore and you don't wanna pay $150 you could replace the laser yourself for half the price.

By any chance do you have it in a cabinet? Because I had mine inside a cabinet and it heated up really fast. I took it out and placed it on top of the cabinet and it doesn't heat up anywhere as fast anymore. Damn you confined spaces that retain heat.

Did you let the PS3 fan go full throttle for a long period of time before this problem started?

Now that I did. I left it on by accident for a few hours right as this started.

since this is an old topic ill just post for future reference as it just happened to me, waited 30 min and it turned back on but only for about 5 min (in game). I think my fan has been dying for a while now (hopefully not dead yet) cuz it kicks in full speed all the time within minutes of starting a game (plenty of vent space,) when i restated my ps3 it didn't even go full speed before it turned off again. I'll wait a few hours to try to turn it on again to do a backup, and see if the fan spins up.

I opened mine up a while back wen i bought it to clean the heat sink/fan/vents and reapplied paste. You can put you hand by the exhaust to see if the fan is pushing air and if its out of warranty and you are comfortable opening electronic you can clean the vents/heat sink.

I was playing La Noire for about 5 hours when it turned off, my room might of been a tad warmer then usually

I must be the luckiest PS3 owner alive. I have owned my 80GB Phat boy since 2008, and not once has it wrecked or shown signs of slowing down.

EDIT: I apologise i never knew the thread was SO old..
