Yes.  It can also play old records from the 50's.  Doesn't upscale them to Dolby Digital though but it should be coming in an update.

How many times has this been discussed? Are there even any movies on HD-DVD that aren't on Blu-ray?

And people wonder why companies are going to such great lengths to protect their property.  Stuff like this is what leads to tighter forms of DRM which is what so many people cry about already.

I agree. I hope it's in 2007 instead of 2008 though. I doubt they can hold out much longer.

It's harder for your average joe however and most importantly presents and clear legal barrer to seek financial and punitive recourse for those that do break it.

You're right.  As long as some retard is out there disrupting the system, all the legitimate consumers will be left suffering for it.

Have you read all the people complaining about HDCP compliance, needing to buy new TV's or having handshaking issues with their TV's firmware?

its not really harder for the average joe though, case the ahckers write programs for the average joe that all they have to do it install it and hit the process button. now that they are using linux to do it the average joe doesnt even have to intall a mod chip, so it makes it that much more easier for him

Hence increased DRM.  It's what you would call a cycle.

yeah but thats bad coding on Sonys part which they will fix , tis more of a temporary annoence then a permanent suffering. They should just let the hackers code it for them haha , they obviosly know what they are doing.

how doesnt it have to do with coding? they wrote software to go with ahrdware to help with copywriting, it works with soem TVs and not with others, if they can fix it in a firmware update like they said, then the are re coding the software to work with those TVs. they never said ti was a hardware issue where they have to change out a chip. unless you are talkign about first gen HDTVs. thats a different story.

Copyright protection in this form wouldn't need to exist if people didn't continue to do illegal things.  If Sony comes out with any update it will be a courtesy to the consumer, not a bend in protection policy.  As for your computer hacking example, I'm assuming identity theft and multi-layered identity authorizations don't count as affecting consumers?  Necessity is the Mother of Invention.  If there were no hackers/thieves there would be no DRM, making life easier for all.
