An employee at EB Games told me today that the PS3 is going to get a $100 price drop next month. He told me he is going to get one then. I don't really care since I already have one, but what do you guys think? (I'll also post a slightly modified version of this in System Wars.)
For some reason this is why I don't listen to employees at Eb/Gamestop/Best Buy, but if it's true I'll make sure to thank you in the coming months whenever I buy a PS3 for $100 bucks cheaper.
That would of been a high point of the GDC. If it was... As that is a major selling point. Not to mention dropping the PS3 price just after the PS3 euro launch. No one would buy it for a month....*wait for the price drop* that would be just stupid.
Pretty dubious man.. Sony would be losing almost $300 per unit, and that just doesn't seem like a viable business model. You never know though, that's the kind of snap announcement that could do a lot of good for sales.

never trust store employees dude I know he wasn't intentionally lying. Do you think he was misinformed? He wasn't a fanboy. He said he really enjoys playing GRAW 2 on 360. He also said he was really excited about the PS3's lineup this month, and that's why he wants to buy one. Does anyone think this is somewhat possible?
Can't be true the Europeans are complaing thet their PS3's are more expensive in the first, place dropping the price in the states a few weeks later would be like rubbing salt into the wounds of all the europeans that had just shelled out 630EUR for theirs. If Sony and the reatilers drop the price this soon it could do more harm than good. It's like admitting defeat in the Next Gen War.

They're getting better at making them now. They are not losing as much money as when they started. The removal of the emotion engine will cut costs. I don't know when this will happen in NA, but I'm betting it will happen and all PS3s will use software to emulate PS2 games. I don't know when the smaller cell is coming out, but that will make it cheaper to manufacture also.

I know its not the same thing because there wasn't the competition then as there is now. But can anybody remember when the PS2 had its first price drop I think it was more than year after it was first launched? For some reason (bar a total disaster) I really can't see the price dropping within or shortly after 12 months of its release.

i think he is talking about the xbox 360 not Ps3 Maybe so. It's more possible that Microsoft drops the price to clean them out to make way for their next SKU.

There is always a possibility but how likely that is, it's a very small chance. It may go on sale, or maybe they're running a special again on the syatem, but I can't see Sony taking that big of a hit on the system this early but again, you never know what Sony is gonna do.
i think they migth be doin a trade in promotion at EB games. liek trade in your PS2 or otehr game system adn 3 games and you get $100 off the PS3. they have done this before, and it seems like that the EB games guy was talking about.
I doubt it as well, sorry if i am repeating everyone else because i haven't read through all the responses. Here is why I think it is a bad idea to drop it next month. First of all, the EU launch hasn't happened yet, so there will be no drop to not cause any customers from withholding their urge to buy it now and keep the consoles moving, and plus if you drop it so fast, the people who got it will feel cheated. I mean launch people in Europe. Price drop could occur eventually and it may be regionally before it goes global such as Japanese vs US market. The cost for these systems is high, but Sony marketting knows that the price MUST come down, but there is very little reason to do it now, the EARLIEST possible price drop I think would be October/November at best to coincide with the shopping season, thanksgiving, and xmas. If price doesn't go down and xbox does at that time, there will be VERY fierce competition. So that's just my 2cents, and I think these will be pretty accuracte predictions if you guys remember this in a few months. Feel free to voice your opinions on this matter
Not true unless it comes straight out an announcement from Sony. Even then, it may or may not happen with their current situation. Either way, this info you got from an EB employee is false. You may also want to let him know so that he doesn't get upset when April rolls around there's no price drop.
It could happen. The ps3 20gb was dropped 80$ in japan, and retailers sold the 20 gig 400$ and *most* sold the 60 gig for 500$. Check a site such as amazon japan even now to see them prices. Meaning they must not be losing that much.
yeah to the guy who said trade in a ps2 cause they did that like last month trade in a ps2 and get 100 $ off a ps3 sounds a bit better than a price drop
I knew you were wrong even before reading what you actually posted, but as soon as "EB Games employee" came up, I stopped reading.  Phil Harrison confirmed over and over again there will be no price drop for a while.
