1. SONY has a TEN year plan planned out so support will begin to diminish by 2017 or around there......
2. The online is great, only no cross game chat.
3. It is a multimedia system, NOT just a game console so if you like Video Games, Photos, Free Online, Videos, Social Applications; this is the system for you.
I think you may get a somewhat biased response on this board :P.
In my opinion, yes, it's still worth a purchase and will be for a few years to come. I doubt Sony will be releasing a PS4 (or equivalent) any time soon, since they've promised a 10-year lifespan for the PS3.
It is a great gaming console and an even better overall media package if you exploit the many features it has to offer. The Blu-ray player is the obvious stand-out feature, and if you're looking for a HD-video player as well as a gaming system, it makes the PS3 a bargain.
The multiplayer experience is great on Call of Duty 4 and 5. The only annoyance I have is when games abrutply end due to the host leaving the game, however, this happens on the Xbox 360 as well, so it isn't a PS3-specific issue. I haven't yet played Resistance 2, but I've heard positive things about it.
MGS 4 , GTA 4 , R1/R2 , GT5P , Uncharted 1/2 , Killzone 2 , LBP , free net , multyplatforms and everything else ...
Short answer : y

Mind you, at the same time it doesn't really matter as I know basically no friends who have a PS3, or if they do, play it online. Kind of a pain, but I've yet to find anyone I want to talk with yet =\1. SONY has a TEN year plan planned out so support will begin to diminish by 2017 or around there......

"Hey guys, I'm playing a game!" "Shut up! So are we!" Cross-game chatting is the stupidest idea imaginable. You've a system that allows you to send and receive messages at your leisure, what more do you need?1. Why do you bother asking? You should know everyone here (including myself) will say , "Yes".

To me chat is the same thing as messenger for example. You have a friends list, you chose a friend and send him a message. It would be nice in the case where im playing Resistance2 and my friend is playing Ninja Gaiden. Then i could send him a message:" Hey buddy, would you like to join a session of Resistance2 tonight?".1. Uhm, no. If you have a wireless network in your home, you can connect your PS3 to it without the need to purchase any additional hardware.I'm actually thinking about buying another one.. Mine is hooked up via HDMI to my Sony 52" XBR in the front room, and somebody is always on it.. My son playing, or my daughter singing. This poor old dad needs his own to play with, so I'm contemplating an 80GB, and getting maybe a 36" HDTV for my bedroom. Stinkin' kids, always ruining my fungreggr107LOL what do you think the Wii was made for? It was made for Parents/Adults, So they could say 'Kids have this super Wii Machine, They be like 'OOOO' And they play it. While the Men play the PS3, genius, May I say so myself.
