Does a wireless modem like netgear have a access point in it or is that sold by itself?

you should be fine, just dont' get too cheap of a wireless modem wbecause then it might send out too weak of a signal.

Wifi works just fine. Walls won't stop it. I recommend an Ethernet cable, but if you have to go Wifi it works just fine.

Now, that's not quite true. If U have a 802.11n / MIMO router, then 1 or 2 walls shouldn't be as much of a problem. Personally, I'm a fan of the Linksys Gaming Router .

PS3 Wi-fi is A LOT better than I had expected. I have never had any issues with it. It never drops my connection when I play online, it downloads quickly, and if your ISP is fast and your router is a 802.11G router, you shouldn't have any problems. The range is also very good. My cable modem and router are in my basement. My room is upstairs. I routinely get 70-80% signal strength.

The wireless setup is not effected by walls very much, the only thing that can kill a wifi signal in a wall is a wire mesh (like in older stucco buildings). I have mine going through two walls and there is a microwave between the PS3 and the router that in theory should ruin the signal but so far I have never had a problem. Most (if not all) wireless problems are caused by the router or the ISP.
