Ok I just bought one of theses two days ago. SO I am new to any issues that they might have. I only have COD 4. It will power down randomly (online and offline) When It shuts off....The standby red light Blinks. For about a minute before it goes to a solid red color. All four buttons on the controller blink also. Now I thought that it was a problem with the system, but I watched Spiderman 3 today. It DID NOT shut off durring the whole movie. Any and all advice is much apperciated. Like I said Im new to the system, so I dont know of any ( if any) issues that it might have. Thanks Guys!
What version OS is your PS3? Some people have reported issues with v2.0 and new games like CoD4. I had one glitch myself so far. Supposedly, if true, Sony is working on a fix. Try different games, rent some at Blockbuster, and test the system. Don't just rely on one game's experience to say the system's bad.
You may need to make sure the console has plenty of room for air to flow around and through the system without being restricted. I had mine in a cabinet for a while and as long as the door was open it was fine but if the door got closed by accident the fans would get louder than usual.
There is also a feature built into the PS3 that shuts the system down before it over heats to allow the console to cool down. I have found that the PS3 does stay a little cooler by haveing it standing vertical. If this is not the problem you may want to call Sony and go through some test over the phone to make sure the fan is working in the console because the fan is so quite most of the time it's hard to hear unless it kicks up to the high speed (even then it's not very loud).
