My friend told me PSN would be pay to play as soon as next year while I personally would think this is good because sony is losing money with every ps3, is my friend telling the truth? or is he just a fanboy?

Actually i think its rumored that as of right now they are making a slight profit on each console (though it may not be long if they do a price cut). But they make alot of thier money on the games that are sold. PSN being free is one of the big selling points of PS3 and if it switched to pay then they would have to become atleast as good as XBL in speed and features which is not right now. Being free though we cant complain too much.Kurushioactually, they're making tons of money on every console. in a press release sony said they had reduced the original production costs by 70%. the original was about 800, so that means it now costs just 240 per console to manufacture. 160 bucks profit per console is great, sony's probably keeping about 50 of that after shipping, packaging and everything. 50 bucks income is better than the other 2.
because sony is losing money with every ps3

not anymore buddy...they lowered the price on production cost by about 70%....so i highly doubt the next PS3s coming out will be making them lose money...thats why they are trying to get all the other PS3s on the shelves out of the store...but i wouldnt mind paying for PSN just as long as it was under 20 bucks....maybe i could deal with 25 but id have to see some serious improvements
IfSony started to charge money for PSN, most people would view it as them trying to imitate Microsoft. I don't see PSN costing money for a long time.
I think what ur friend was getting at, was that sony sent out emails 2 certain ppl describing a upgraded psn, like it has more 2 it... altho it would cost $$$, but I think its optional if it happens.
One of the main reasons I bought the ps3 was because of free online. If sony starts charging us, I don't know what I would do.

I'm about 99% sure your friend simply is guessing and speculating. We all know there is some kind of new/premium service in addition to what we already have.
At this point no one knows what that service is.
After using my system for 3 years now I could tell you honestly I will gladly pay for PSN subscription if it comes to that. Why? Well because I enjoy the service and there really isn't any other way around it. Think of Xbox Live, if you have one and wish to use all of it's function, including online gameplay you have to pay that subscription.
That's just the way it is. When you have one system and your have friends or family using it, you won't be left behind.
We, PS3 owners, are quite lucky so far. It's true, myself like many have paid premium price on a console and the promises of free online gameplay still stands. Will it change in future to resemble more of a Xbox Live membership? It could but I don't see it happening when it comes to online gaming. That was and still is one of Sony's PS3 strategies going into next generation - free online.
Almost all exclusive games have steady and amazing dedicated servers as well. I have been enjoying it for long time and I have no problems paying for it if it comes to that in future.
Gaming is a hobby and like all hobbies, there is a certain price to it. ;)

I don't think so and unless you can provide some links, I believe sony is still losing money or breaking even with their consoles
Does your friend work for sony? If he doesn't, just take it as a rumor.

Wow hes a lying bastard. The first thing I asked him after he told me that was who did you hear that from? His answer was from Sony >.> damn fanboy..
Well.... In some ways they are, they still aernt gonna charge for PSN. Or else. No, I don't think it ever will.. sony is nothing like microsoft.

This.
although what I would do is phone up sony and cuss them out. Would it make anything better? Probably not but I would get to blow off some steam at least.
psn is faster ? cuz its server side and not p2p so there isnt lag or anything like that. just one of the facts u might have assumed and not known.
i dont think they will. Its one of the reason why i chose the ps3 over the xbox360. I dont care if it offers just a little less than XBL, PSN offers more than enough for me.
izmickey
xbl only stops a trip to the store in my opinion expecialy because its slower n u can still do all the normal essential stuff on psn u can on xbl
its called chainmail. It's probably made by the same people who said you can get $20 on PSN if your tell this to 20 of your PSN friends.
This. I don't think it should be pay to play, unless Sony really boost up PSN in terms of its features. No becasue free PSN is one of the selling points of the PS3
