Some people have been complaining about PSP's slow output of hit games this year -- some have gone as far as to say that the PSP is finished and will die off.
Well, PSP remains solid in the sales charts of countries around the world, and 2009 actually may be the PSP's best yet in terms of software, not the worst.

Note that I am only listing games I feel deserve mention, not shovelware or games unlikely to be successful.

Patapon 2

pata

Sequel to the critically acclaimed rythm war game, Patapon 2 looks to be another must have title for the PSP.

Resistance Retribution

rawr

Visually, RR looks to rival the best looking games on the PSP. Not only is the hardware being pushed, but RR will be the defining shooter for the PSP thanks to its control system and a plans for an epic wi-fi online play -- including over 20 missions in the single player.

Dissidia Final Fantasy

ff

Another graphical powerhouse for the PSP, Dissidia may well be a bigger hit than the Crisis Core. Who doesn't want to play as the hero and villians of all their favorite FF games? The game is a fighter, but not traditional in any sense. The roster includes characters from FF1 - FF12, and includes a story mode, video editor, and online play.

Phantasy Star Portable

phant

Already proven itself as a hit tile in Japan, PSP for the PSP will be heading to North America in 2009.

Star Ocean: Second Evolution

star

Yes that super awesome JRPG for the 360 that has everyone talking about has a name for itself for a reason. The 2nd iteration of the SO series, the franchise remakes continue on the PSP.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep

kh

Square Enix has been showering the PSP with love lately, and the trend continues in bringing the huge KH franchise aboard the PSP. Whether BBS is released in both Japan and in the west is yet to be confirmed, but still a title too look forward to.

Final Fantasy XIII: Agito

ff13

The production values behind this title already seem to be stunning for a handheld, but nothing less is expected from Square's 3rd part of the FF13 collection of games. Once again, 2009 for the west is a only a possibility, but the fact that its coming is quite exciting.

Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday

para

I personally doubt a 2009 release for NA, but might as well put it up there with all the other hot SE titles!

Other titles to keep an eye on:

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
Dynasty Warriors Strike force
Dj Max Fever

Japan is also getting two fantastic looking titles from level 5:

Ushiro

us

Horror action RPG, the game looks to have an intense atmopshere and RPG gameplay.

Cardboard Senki

card

You build your own toy war mech thingies, and battle them.

Lets hope these titles eventaully make it overseas.

+ exciting potential for the newly introduced PSP online store. Expect lots of demos, downloable content, more PSX games, and full PSP downloads.

and of course, the infamous rumours of a Devil May Cry and Gran Turismo Portable will always loom over every year =p.

From the looks of it Square is trying to bring some fresh air to the PSP with all of the games they have scheduled for 2009. The only games I really care about are Patapon 2, Loco Roco 2, Resistance, Parasite Eve, Kingdom Hearts and maybe Final Fantasy Dissidia.

I really don't want to see the PSP die just yet. I feel that it has so much to offer but it does't have the games to back it up.

I heard that they plan to use the same graphics engine that was used in the Syphon Filter titles to power Resistance. Bet the game's gonna look absolutely beautiful! (And play beautifully too.)

When I first saw the Resistance screenshots, I thought it was punisher, and thought that until I looked at the title, and look closely at the chimera. Why must I have to be so oblivious to things.

I would define dying as the PSP dying away from the crap and being "reborn" if I may say so. I'm loving the PSP in 2009

P.S- I'm still rockin' the phat

Patapon 2 looks good , so does Resistance but besides that Square-Enix RPG's don't really excite me much anymore (Well except Parasite Eve). Here's hoping for a new Lumines. That would be sick.

well only fanboys said PSP was dead or dying... its true that PSP doesnt get a huge amount of titles coming out on a weekly basis as opposed to the DS (though only a very very very small percentage of those are worth playing) but 2009 is looking to be a great year for PSP..

Sony should focus more on its handheld, it has so much potential and such a huge install base, it would be a waiste not supporting it in a solid way...

I define dying as any system that does not have a huge library of titles I mostly wouldn't be caught dead playing. So yes, the DS and Wii are alive and well.

fast facts

sony had said they plan to have the PSP around for the same time as the PS3.

also that the engine is locked now at something like 220mHz while it can go up to 300mHz (these might not be accurate figures but you get the point). i think the market it's aiming for is a bit odd.

nintendo ds with its stylish pens (garbage for me) is popular with teenagers who have the time to take it out and start playing on the bus or the train. the PSP is aimed more towards early twenties/thirties, but these don't really play that much outside their home. a survey had shown that people are just as likely to use their handheld devices at home. so most people who have a PSP have another console that they prefer playing at home. (i do at least!) so it ends up being redundant for them.

i would love to see the PSP blossom, but dishing out just jRPGs and fighting games is not going to solve the problem, how many can someone play? it needs to have more varied games. i mean the nintendo ds is getting proper adventures for christ's sake!

I must say it is a personal thing whether you like "proper" adventure games. Me personally, It is not really my thing ! that means in my world the PSP is not missing out when Gamespots Most Popular DS Adventure Games are these

I think its a sign of the lack of games when all gamespot have are stil TGS news on the games. Its been a bad year, I think I've only bought 2 games for it (excluding the ones I've purchased from the PSN) and thats God of War and Star Wars.

Now that the PSP has its own store, I think it should start to separate itself from the PS2 and become its own machine.

The PSP is the best looking portable hand-held, I would like to see it strive to greater heights.

Lol, I hardly take either one of PSP and DS outside and play them. I just like them because i still have the opportunity to play them wherever I want in the house... and this may sound gross, but the bathroom as well. Plus I really didn't want next gen consoles when I could have just as much fun with something cheaper game-wise and and system-wise.

The line-up looks great, though. By the way, is Little Big Planet still coming out for the PSP? And if so, is it coming this year?

Not a whole lot of the PSP games available other than those that I own have really interested me. But I will never consider mine dead as long as I can watch movies on it also. And with (the apparent?) dwindling of UMD movie releases it doesn't help. But I have memory sticks with digital copies that were packaged with DVD's that I had bought. And/or I will copy DVDs that I own and put them on a memory stick for portable viewing. I play my 360 at home so my PSP is mostly used only away from home but it's used every night at work. I'd also find the WiFi Internet much more appealing if they created a keyboard/keypad that connected to the handheld and ran through the USB port. I can't walk around with a full-size USB keyboard. As it is I've used it only for a week to answer e-mail after I moved here, jacking a neighbor's unprotected wireless access until my cable internet was available in my new apt. They could take a cue for Xbox360 and add a similar keypad. Typing out an e-mail/filling out a form is painful scrolling to each letter and clicking X. haha I believe that there are a few simple things that they could do to make what the PSP already offers even better. I don't want the PSP overall to die. But as long as my handheld works it will still be used even if it's only as a portable movie theater.

I wouldn't want their FF games. I feel that III and IV should be kept in 2D and just have graphic updates like I and II for the PSP

Huh... there is nothing awesome about that small list. Probably half of them will get low review scores anyway. They need more variety considering half the games listed are from SquareEnix.

I'll get the Second Story, Kingdom Hearts and maybe Agito and Phantasy Star if they get good reviews.

The Dissidia fighting is not interesting to me and neither is resistance.

PE3 has me interested the most. However that many RPG's should easily last through the year. I don't think much more needs to come out next year.
