I recently went to China and wanted to get a PSP camera while I was there (I know it's from Japan, but I didn't want to deal with shipping it to my house).

When I went to get it, I tested it and plugged it into my PSP and the PSP did not seem to recognize the camera at all.  Then we tried another camera and with mine and another PSP and neither of them worked.  So, in total we tried 2 cameras with 2 PSPs and we got the same error message every time.  I ended up not getting a camera because it didn't work.

Does anyone know what's wrong?  Were the cameras just defective or something?  Also, just to note, I did not have the edit disc inserted and just used the "camera" icon (the salesman seemed to think that it wasn't necessary) and I was using firmware 3.03.

It didn' t work with one of the Japanese PSPs either, so I don't think that that is the problem.  There shouldn't be a problem with firmware but there might be.

Check your camera.... if its the new black 450x camera that also comes with the new game Invizimals it should work on a psp 2000 or 3000 but if you have a psp 1000...... you will need the new v6.00 firmware.

I had that problem with Invizimals also but got around it. You need to make sure the camera connection is completely clean. This includes the male end on the camera and the female end in the psp. I blew on them and it worked.
