Fifth it. I can't wait for Jan 27, I just bought a PSP 3000 super cheap, and am having the time of my life with it.
I guess I 6th it. I do agree that expectations of the PSP2 compared to the 3DS is pretty high, and if it's anything like what the PSp and DS are now, I'm definitely going for the PSP2
Anyways, this would probably be better posted in the System Wars category, as it'll probably be locked here.
This belongs in system wars.
Something like this came up yesterday.
As for your argument, Sony is the underdog in the handheld market because it has not had the time nor the experience that Nintendo has had. Nintendo has been a gaming company for a little over 100 years, and it's just been that their most recent chapter has entered videogames. Sony has entered the videogame market in about the last 20 years.
Nintendo has a longer standing history, so people trust it more.
Edit: Totally had my timeframe off for Nintendo.
Your years seem... off...?This belongs in system wars.

We all know the real reason Britain and America went to war was over a stolen Charizard card...Wtf? 200 years? You mean like in 1811, they had card games like Pokemon, lol?

CORRECTION: NINTENDO WAS ACTUALLY FOUNDED IN 1889. JUST SAW ON WIKIPEDIA, WHICH MAKES IT A BIT OVER 100 YEARS OLD.Ps3winzOooh, good call. I'm betting Nintendo was one of the smaller industries that got swallowed up through the market revolution by some huge corporation, but made a comeback later.
CORRECTION: NINTENDO WAS ACTUALLY FOUNDED IN 1889. JUST SAW ON WIKIPEDIA, WHICH MAKES IT A BIT OVER 100 YEARS OLD.Ps3winzAh, had been a while since I saw it, I knew it was still a pretty ridiculous timeframe (I was thinking the 2nd century of Nintendo [for those that don't know, 0-99 AD is the first century, 100-199 the 2nd century, etc.])...probably should have double checked before posting it.
But yes, actually, Nintendo started off with card games...though it was certainly not Pokemon.
The area where sony could beat nintendo in is price point. At launch date it seems that the 3DS will cost you an arm and a leg, if sony makes this next psp with modest hardware and no expensive gimmicks (such as 3D) they could launch it at a lower price than the DS, gaining a huge advantage over Nintendo. I am hoping for some hardcore portable gaming for the next 5 years without causing my hip pocket nerve serious pain, so lets see what sony reveals on the 27th.
Nintendo should totally create an autobigraphy of it company. They should title it "NINTENDO: Cab Companies, Love Hotels, Video Games, and BEYOND".

Considering the rumours, if even half of it is true, they've already passed "modest hardware". I doubt this will cost less than the 3DS (though I will be pleasantly suprised if it will while living up to the expectations).
As for the design, I actually really like the PSP-3000 look. Any smaller and I feel it would be too awkward to play on. A nice wide screen with the botton on each side is a perfect layout for me. And I barely ever play my PSP for less than 5 minutes, so there's no need to keep it within easy reach (aka pocket). I usually just toss it in my bag.
This would be a good way to draw in more of the mature audience. :P

I only hope this next generation of PSP doesn't pull what's been going on with Sony products as of late, where we get this oversized clunker, and then they hone their craft and turn out wee lil' beauties that make the old clunkers look like P's O' S.
If this next generation doesn't pull a "Newer, Bigger, Better" sort of design and instead just has "Newer and Better" ideas down, I'll be very happy. I was a bit peeved when the DS first came out, and while it was designed as a throwback to the old Game and Watch games of Nintendo yore and lore...it was just too. damn. big. Especially when you compare it to how the GBA SP folded up into a small lump you could nicely store in your pocket (after it got revised of course). Portable means to be able to carry it with you...not to lug it along...so if anything, it means not to rush development for sales.
Maybe it's just me, but these days gaming companies really need to get the product right the first time...I'm tired of seeing all these intermediary systems...sure, a new design is great and all, but there's been four versions of the DS (original, lite, DSi, DSiXL), and likewise, four of the PSP (1000, 2000, 3000, Go)...that's a little too much. One redesign is all we need, if we need it.Microsoft doesn't redesign their consoles (I'd say Elite counted here, but it's really just a black 360 that they test a bit more), and Nintendo hasn't redesigned any of their home consoles (to my knowledge not at least in the States, then again, they could have an alternate reality machine that tells them what would happen if they made these revisions, of course, this would be after they sacrificed a gaming virgin to their statues of demonified Bowsers, Kirbies, and Yoshis)...so why has there been such a drive to redesign handheld gaming consoles?
I just want this new PSP to be right the first time...no extra models, nadda. I may love my Go, but if it took them three models beforehand to change the design to the PSP Go's look...I'm not entirely sure they should have released the 1000 and 2000 (and perhaps even the 3000) outside of beta testing. It's nothing short of infuriating to find out that certain models are more capable than others, especially when you bought a system at start-up, only to see someone with the new super-mega-awesome-deluxe-edition-that-makes-you-immune to-herpes-and-AIDs because he simply decided to buy it later.
I think people are forgetting in this thread that the biggest blame should be pointed towards Sony themselves for not properly supporting their handheld and focussing too much on their main console. Whenever a PSP game comes out, there's little to no advertising or awareness campaigns, apart from a very select core titles such as GOW and MGS. Hell, just last week I found out there's a 300 game I never even had heard of. I would've imagined such a large film franchise would've at least be advertised a little, but no.DaavpukeIt wasn't advertised because it was one of those titles that if you played it before the movie, it'd sour the taste in your mouth for the movie, or comic for that matter. Apparently, it was just that bad.

Apparently, it was just that bad. Regardless of the game quality, that has NEVER stopped a game's awareness campaign. I can only think of a few games that held up to their standard that way.[QUOTE="Daavpuke"]I think people are forgetting in this thread that the biggest blame should be pointed towards Sony themselves for not properly supporting their handheld and focussing too much on their main console. I can only think of a few games that held up to their standard that way.But if funding is pulled, there can be no campaign. The game was reviewed and dismissed (which lead to a lack of funding to promote itself with) because it was one of those poor 'transitions from film into a game'...and everyone knows you don't make a film to have a game based off of it.[QUOTE="Daavpuke"]I think people are forgetting in this thread that the biggest blame should be pointed towards Sony themselves for not properly supporting their handheld and focussing too much on their main console. Let's take "Street Fighter" for example...and no, this isn't the great fighting game we all know and love, this is "Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game", a game based off the movie and made to look like an "updated" Mortal Kombat, except the sprites were terrible, with Street Fighter II having better flow between moves because the game based off the movie was just so damned awful and choppy...and to be honest, I don't think many people know this game even knows this game exists now, because people in charge of publicity for games then expected the fame of the movie to cause the game to be immensely popular, and people watched. And learned. All of this happening as a result...not everyone's learned though.
Simply put, movies aren't meant to be games and games aren't meant to be movies, because one of the two of them is going to rely heavily on the fanbase of the other one to get any sales.
I have owned both psp (twice ) and have a ds now. I think that psp is overlooked because it doesent bring anything really new to the table. The ds had touch screen, the wii motion censor and now 3ds capability without the need for glasses, these are all big things. Sorry if i myself am overlooking some features of the psp but nintendo will always have the most systems sold :S

I feel that the Go is different enough from the 3000 to not be a considered a revision, and as you said one revision (the 3000) is fine after a couple of years. The only one I felt was unnecessary was the 2000. So Sony hasn`t done that badly in this aspect imo. And both Microsoft and Nintendo have redesigned their console numerous times.
On a side note, my PSP-1000 is still as awesome as it ever was, even after the release of 2000, 3000, and the Go.

I`d say the PSP has already brought a lot of new stuff to the table. I`ve never seen a portable with such awesome graphics and games, or with an analog stick. If you say that isn`t new, then you might as well say the PS3 hasn`t brought snything new over either. The DS touchscreen was alright, but more of a gimick. The 3D aspect of the 3DS is even more gimmicky. I`ll eventually get one since it backwards compatible, but I doubt the 3D would impress me enough to endure the strain it`ll cause my eyes.
Anyways, I`d much rather have improvements than gimmicks I probably wouldn`t use.

Agreed, the PSP *did* bring a lot of new things to the table, and strengthened my belief that Sony's products are more powerful than Nintendo's.Please Log In to post.
