No picture just an announcement from a retailer. Could be a mistake.

Let the speculation begin.

Well thats not promising. I think sony should have a sucessor and not another reiteration of the old design. Its going to make consumers pick the 3DS since it is beginning to be considered a successor to the DS, and people dont want anything old especially if its techonology. Also after so many in the gaming industry have seen the 3DS, they will be underwelmed if this isnt flat out SPECTACULAR.
Well crap, I just bought a 3000. Meh. I can't think of anything they could add/fix, except possibly making Internet faster and doing something so the screen doesn't magnetically attract every bit of dust, dandruff and spit.
Fusionmix
SD card support would be a nice addition. Sony added a combination SD/MS slot to its whole line of digital cameras a little while back.
I think it looks promising in that there is going to be a new iteration of the psp, just is it going to be a revamp or a revision?
I just wish Sony would say an announcement that they are going to release something and give us the details at GC or TGS like nintendo did for the 3DS back in March.
I don't think Sony'd do that (by that I mean announce it early on) unless it's a major revamp. I see this more as a psp sales booster.
I'll believe it when I see it!jordonjfor whatever reason i'm wanting to bet money with you that there will be a psp-4000. I don't think anyone actually wants it, but they'll make it..for whatever reason.. the only things i can think of that would make it the best remodel yet are these features: Built in 16GB of memory. dual memory card slots (you can never have too much memory) umd drive. make it have the go's buttons somehow, i love the triggers, and the d-pad along with analog stick just all feel nice. completely revamped internet browser. added video files it can actually play (I barely ever have a problem with the way it is now, it'd just be a nice addition)
If this is true about Sony putting out another existing PSP model instead of having a real successor, then Sony has dug their grave further deeper in the handheld market.
Nintendo would obliterate them with the 3DS if this happens.

I am in agreement. Plus the 3000 is a great handheld. I would invest resources in the Sony 3DS competitor system.
I could see them always calling the PSP the PSP, and then just doing upgrades with the model number. The PSP 4000 could be what they call the PSP 2.
1. fix the interlacing issue of the screen present on ALL PSP 3000 versions. (google or youtube it) 2. Faster clock speeds and more internal memory 3. SD cards support 4. Blue tooth functionality and the ability to pair with a dualshock via blue tooth or mini USB port and NO, you don't need the PS3 in between to use the ds controllers for games. 5. Fix the TV output and make it fullscreen on most HDTVs and fix the aspect ratio of the PSP TV output (YES! Make circles actually circles and not wide ovals [strectched sideways]) 6. In A PSP-3000 form factor or a slightly bigger Go with UMD drive. Sounds more realistic right? Are these too much to ask from Sony? Heck, I'm willing to spend $ 249.99 on such a thing and I don't even have a PS3 yet :)The only thing I could see this having is bluetooth, other than that... Nope, not getting any ideas.

Graphics upgrades, battery upgrades, a better power button (that thing is crap, sometimes it just goes to sleep instead of turning off), the list goes on as far as what they could improve (to Plothole).1. fix the interlacing issue of the screen present on ALL PSP 3000 versions. 1. Fair enough.
2. This probably won't happen, simply because it would only raise costs, and the small speed boost would be minimal at best. The hardware of the system only needs to be as powerful as the games for it, so speed probably won't change until the next iteration. But I could be wrong...
3. It won't happen. Sony has always been very exclusive about their storage media, and more importantly, it makes them money. Sad, but true.
4. That's what I meant, quite a probable feature, and a nice one at that. :)
5. For one, fullscreen would look worse than the already-stretched picture from the PSP's relatively small screen resolution. It would be interesting, however, to see a faster, bigger and better PSP capable of outputting higher screen resolutions, even to the point of fullscreen on an HDTV. If that's possible, that is. Hmmm...
6. That is an interesting proposition... I would like to see a 3000-style PSP with an internal memory, or a Go with a UMD, :P same thing really.
I hope I don't sound too rude, I'm just trying to discuss what features would be good in a PSP 4000. :D Your points were good.

Graphical updates would make it a successor. This only appears to be another model of the existing PSP.
That power switch is rather annoying. Especially since mine has gotten a bit loose and tends to jump into the "hold" position when I flick it on.

As I pointed out earlier in this thread, Sony has added support for SD in their recent digital cameras. I think they realize that Memory Stick is ultimately going to be a dead end format.
They won't necessary may get obliterated. In older generations company's have launched consoles more powerful than the competition with a lot of support, great games and ended all the way down. It's too early to say they will get obliterated. If this is true about Sony putting out another existing PSP model instead of having a real successor, then Sony has dug their grave further deeper in the handheld market.

@Granpire
1. ok
2. It depends on how much power you want to put in the next one. Technology has taken off in the handheld market since the first psp that putting something standard in the psp2 would still make a worthwhile difference. Look at the specs of the iphone or android and you can easily see that putting something higher then those wouldnt cost all that much.
3. Yea sony didnt even support HDDVD and instead made their own format, like the betamax. I dont think sony will support someone else.
4. Im with both of you on this. It would raise sales of the dualshock3 and any psp holder.
5. I think the cropped output is fine like Granpire said since it would make many games look horrible as the tv screen gets bigger.
6. if its a psp4000 then keep the umd but have like 4-8gbs of internal memory (sony would probably have 4 since most bundles have 4 standard now). If its the psp2 then expect no umd drive.
3. Yea sony didnt even support HDDVD and instead made their own format, like the betamax. I dont think sony will support someone else.

But Sony did eventually let go of Betamax and started producing their own VHS players and movies on VHS. And again, they are already supporting SD in their latest cameras.

No man! Your points are totally more realistic LOL! And the way you brought it up was far from being rude. I guess these features wouldn't exactly be on a probably incremental upgrade like most of us think the PSP 4000 would be. *Sigh* Goodluck to us all :)This is why I can't sell my phat, the used market is flooded with old models as people buy new ones which then sell those when they get bored the next month. PSP is almost as bad as the iphone. How many versions will there be!Sins-of-Mosin
I wish all of these companies would buy back their old systems and donate them to countries in Africa and South America. It would benefit the industry and so many ways.

I totally agree with you, but my points were all very specific about the 4000. As we've seen with the PS3 in the past, very small hardware changes could boost performance a bit, especially with load times and things such as web browsing. I think most small speed issues the PSP has, however, could be easily resolved through software solutions, and long load times are mostly just a development problem. Of course, the PSP2 wouldn't be just another PSP, and I'll expect some great portable graphics in the PSP2. :) As well as a higher price tag, of course.

It all does come down to the software. Each console and handheld has growing pains at the beginning of their launches for a few years until they truly grow into their owns. However, like you said, its more important for developers continue patronizing the system and get better with the architecture. The ps3 was very difficult to develop for at the beginning but now its florished as more developers understand its architecture.
I think that the psp2 should essentially have the same architecture but with higher specs. Or have the same architecture as the ps3 but with lower specs made for a handheld so that developers can really utilize its capablilities.
What i dont understand is why arent more people in the industry getting behind the psp. It takes less money to develop for the psp and yet you can still have a console game on it (i.e. Peace Walker).

I think the hacking of the 1000 was a major issue. Plus the DS Lite was a really good looking system. Even though I love the PSP, the DS Lites physical design was better than the PSP 1000 & the PSP 2000 took so long to come out. Thats why it is important Sony time their system right. Because a lot of gamers are on the fence for the Gen 7 Phase 2 handhelds. Even though the Phase 1 system seemed a lil one sided with PSP having 1/3rd of the market.
